From allostasis to addiction: Cortisol dysregulation, daily stress and relations with 9-year alcohol and substance use disorder severity in community adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Diurnal cortisol dysregulation and daily stressor severity may jointly forecast long-term alcohol use disorder (AUD) and substance use disorder (SUD) severity, yet most evidence is cross-sectional and relies on single cortisol indices. This study examined whether three cortisol indices nonlinearly interacted with daily stressor severity to predict 9-year AUD and SUD severity. DESIGN: Longitudinal observational study with a 9-year follow-up. Analyses were not pre-registered. SETTING: Community-based sample in the United States of America. PARTICIPANTS: 1617 community-dwe

Integrated infectious disease and substance use disorder treatment for severe injection-related infections: protocol for the randomized controlled HI-SIRI trial.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalizations for acute bacterial and fungal infections related to injection drug use are increasing in the background of the United States drug overdose crisis. These infections are a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality among people who inject drugs (PWID). Currently, limited comprehensive approaches to caring for PWID hospitalized with severe injection-related infections (SIRIs) exist. We developed a multidisciplinary model integrating infectious disease (ID), substance use disorder (SUD), harm reduction, and patient navigation treatment approaches to help impro

Prescription drug use, misuse and related substance use disorder symptoms vary by educational status and attainment in U.S. adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse (PDM) rates are highest in adolescents and young adults. Little research in these high-risk groups has examined PDM differences by educational status or attainment. This investigation attempted to further our understanding of adolescent and young adult prescription drug use and misuse through examining PDM type (i.e., nonmedical misuse, medical misuse and mixed misuse) and substance use disorder (SUD) symptoms from PDM by educational status/attainment. METHODS: Data were from the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, with 13,585 adolescent and 14,55

Hospitalization and acute care utilization after substance use disorder-related emergency department visits among deaf or hard of hearing youth.

INTRODUCTION: Youth with hearing loss face challenges such as communication barriers in acute care settings and increased risk for substance use. Yet the association between hearing loss and healthcare utilization following substance use disorder (SUD)-related emergency department (ED) visits has not been examined. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using 2016-2019 State Emergency Department and State Inpatient Databases from New York and Maryland. Youth aged 15-24 with documented hearing loss and SUD-related ED visits were identified. A 1:5 propensity score-matched cohort was

The association between social isolation and DSM-IV mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders: wave 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to document the prevalence of social isolation from close friends and religious group members and to test the association of having infrequently contacted close friends and members of religious groups with the current DSM-IV mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders. METHOD: We conducted a secondary data analysis based on a cross-sectional, population-based study conducted in 2004-2005 that consists of a nationally representative sample of 34,653 American community-dwelling adults aged 18 years and older. Mood, anxiety, and substance use disorders we

Health-Related Quality of Life in Male Patients under Treatment for Substance Use Disorders with and without Major Depressive Disorder: Influence in Clinical Course at One-Year Follow-Up.

Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessment has interest as an indicator of degree of affectation and prognosis in mental disorders. HRQoL is impaired in both Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), two conditions highly prevalent, although less studied when both are coexisting (SUD + MDD). Hence, we decided to explore HRQoL with the SF-36 survey in a sample of 123 SUD and 114 SUD + MDD patients (51 symptomatic and 63 asymptomatic of depressive symptoms) under treatment. We performed analyses to examine HRQoL among groups, and its predictive value at 3-, 6- and

Sex-Based Disparities in Health Outcomes and Pandemic-Related Stressors Among Persons with Substance Use Disorders: Findings from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2021.

The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted healthcare access and exacerbated health disparities, particularly among persons with a substance use disorder (SUD). Research on gender and sex-based disparities in health outcomes among people with SUDs is warranted, especially following periods of economic and social shocks like the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this study is to examine sex-based differences in health outcomes and pandemic-related stressors among US adults with past-year SUD following the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. Data from the 2021 National Survey on Drug Use and Health were

The Musical Reassociation Model (MRM): A Stage-Based Framework for Managing Music-Related Cues and Reclaiming Musical Agency in Substance Use Disorder Recovery.

Music plays a central role in identity, emotion regulation, and everyday functioning, yet in the context of substance use disorders, it may also become conditioned through repeated pairing with intoxication and later function as a cue for craving, urges to use, or emotional destabilization. Existing literature has recognized both the risks and therapeutic potential of music in recovery but has offered limited stage-sensitive guidance for clinical decision-making. This article introduces the Musical Reassociation Model (MRM), a stage-based conceptual framework that maps how the relationship bet

Relations between facets and personality domains with impulsivity: New evidence using the DSM-5 Section III framework in patients with substance use disorders.

Section III of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition proposes an alternative diagnostic model for personality disorders based on the identification of pathological personality facets. Despite the existing evidence for the relationship between personality disorders and impulsivity in patients with substance use disorders, no study has yet been conducted within this framework. Thus, using a sample of 110 patients with substance use disorders, the present work aims to (a) analyze the relationship between the different personality facets and domains evaluated by

Relation of substance use disorders to mortality, accident and emergency department attendances, and hospital admissions: A 13-year population-based cohort study in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: The impact of substance use disorders (SUD) in an Asian population has not been fully explored. We aimed to assess the risk of mortality, accident and emergency (A&E) department attendances, and hospital admissions associated with SUD in a population-based cohort study. METHOD: Patients diagnosed with SUD in public A&E departments from 2004 to 2016 (N = 8,423) were identified in the Clinical Database Analysis and Reporting System of the Hong Kong Hospital Authority and 1:1 matched to patients without SUD by propensity score (N = 6,074 in each group). Medication for opioid use disorder treatment and specialty outpatient substance use treatment outcomes: Differences in retention and completion among opioid-related discharges in 2016.

Opioid medication treatment access is a public health priority aimed to improve opioid use treatment outcomes. However, Medicaid does not cover all forms of MOUD, particularly methadone, in many states. We examined associations between medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) plans and substance use treatment discharge reason (e.g., completed treatment, dropped out of treatment) as well as treatment retention (i.e., length of stay), and estimated whether these relationships were modified by state Medicaid methadone coverage. Data from the 2016 Treatment Episode Data Set for Discharges (TEDS-D

The nationwide trends in hospital admissions, deaths, and costs related to hepatitis C stratified by psychiatric disorders and substance use: an analysis of US hospitals between 2016 and 2019.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a prominent liver disease that often presents with mental illness. We stratify the HCV population and review its healthcare burden on the US hospital system. METHODS: The US National Inpatient Sample was used to select admissions related to HCV between 2016 and 2019. Weights were assigned to discharges, and trend analyses were performed. Strata were formed across demographics, comorbidities, psychiatric and substance use conditions, and other variables. Outcomes of interest included hospitalization incidences, mortality rates, total costs, and m

Changes of clinical symptoms in patients with new psychoactive substance (NPS)-related disorders from fiscal year 2012 to 2014: A study in hospitals specializing in the treatment of addiction.

AIMS: The use of new psychoactive substances (NPS) has become increasingly widespread over the last decade, in Japan and internationally. NPS are associated with a range of increasingly serious clinical, public, and social issues. Political measures to ameliorate the effects of NPS in Japan have focused on tightening regulation rather than establishing treatment methods. The current study sought to compare the neuropsychiatric symptoms of patients with NPS-related disorders across several years. We examined patients who attended specialized hospitals for treating addiction, to elucidate the im

Associations between child maltreatment and hospital admissions for alcohol and other substance use-related disorders up to 40 years of age: Results from the Childhood Adversity and Lifetime Morbidity study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Evidence on the associations between child maltreatment (CM), alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and other substance use disorders (SUDs) comes largely from retrospective studies. These rely on self-reported data, which may be impacted by recall bias. Using prospective CM reports to statutory agencies, we measured associations between CM notifications and inpatient admissions for AUDs and SUDs up to 40 years of age. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Observational study linking administrative health data from Queensland, Australia to prospective birth cohort data comprising both
