99-mTc-SF gastrointestinal scintigraphy used in recent years in the assessment of site and activity for ulcerative lesions, was shown to be very important for the diagnosis of a rare case of right colonic hemangioma. A young female patient suffering for some time from functional intestinal disorders, following negative radiologic and endoscopic findings, underwent 99-mTc-SF scintigraphy, which showed massive uptake of radioactivity in the ascending and right flexure of colon. A repeated colonoscopy with biopsy allowed the histologic diagnosis of capillary hemangioma.

We entered 174 patients with healed duodenal ulcer and 77 with healed gastric ulcer into a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 6-month trial to investigate the efficacy of 1 g sucralfate twice daily in preventing ulcer recurrence. Endoscopy was performed after 6 months or earlier for symptoms compatible with ulcer disease. The relapse rate in the 126 patients with duodenal ulcer who could be evaluated for efficacy was 14/66 (21.2%) under sucralfate and 30/60 (50%) under placebo treatment (p less than 0.01). No significant difference in relapse rate was found in the 55 gastric ulcer patients who

Sucralfate is a common medication used to treat duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, and gastritis. The off-label use of topical sucralfate has been described in the literature to induce wound healing in epithelial injury. Yet, current literature lacks clinical depictions in the application of sucralfate to treat a common gastrostomy tube complication, that of a dilated gastrostomy site. We present a case report of a medically complex pediatric patient where topical sucralfate was applied to reduce the size of a large gastrostomy stomal defect. Sucralfate was used to reduce healing time and allow

BACKGROUND: The most prevalent topical treatment for partial thickness burns is silver sulfadiazine 1% (SSD). Recent studies have shown that the healing of partial thickness burns is delayed with the use of SSD. One of the potential burn dressings is sucralfate.
OBJECTIVES: With this study the authors have aimed to analyze comparatively the effects of sucralfate and SSD on second degree burn wounds in rats.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-eight male rats were divided into three equal groups. A burn model was constituted on the back of all rats. The burned areas in the first, second and third gro

The combination of sucralfate (SUC) and famotidine (FAM) at subtherapeutic dose on cysteamine-induced duodenal ulcers (3 x 250 mg/kg) in female rats was studied. Subtherapeutic doses were determined in the preliminary studies. They were 200 mg/kg SUC and 0.2 mg/kg FAM (twice a day). The macroscopic examination was done 24 hours after first application of cysteamine. The effectiveness of SUC and FAM combination in subtherapeutic doses was confirmed by decreased number (from 1.3 to 0.5), length (from 5.5 mm to 1.9 mm), severity of duodenal ulcers (from 3.4 to 1.2) and reduction of ulcerative ind

48 patients in whom previous endoscopic signs of chronic gastritis had been abolished by treatment with either 1 g sucralfate three times daily or 40 mg famotidine at night were followed up for 3 months without further therapy. Cumulative endoscopic relapse rates at 3 months were 21.7% in the sucralfate group and 57.1% in the famotidine group (p = 0.017). All patients with endoscopic recurrence of gastritis also reported recurrence of dyspeptic symptoms of various degrees. Most patients with endoscopic relapse had persisting histologic gastritis, but up to 67% of subjects with histologic gastr

The course of gastritis and Campylobacter pylori was studied in a single-blind randomized trial comparing cimetidine 200 mg three times a day and 400 mg at night and sucralfate 1 g four times a day orally for four weeks in 140 patients with proved duodenal ulcer. At least two antral biopsies were performed during endoscopy before entry and at the end of four weeks. The activity and the degree of chronic inflammation, as assessed histologically by the degree of infiltration of, respectively, polymorphs and chronic inflammatory cells, were graded blindly by two pathologists as nil, mild, moderat

Sucralfate is a basic aluminium salt of sulphated sucrose which is advocated for use in peptic ulcer disease. It is minimally absorbed after oral administration and is believed to act primarily at the ulcer site by protecting the ulcer from the effects of pepsin, acid and possibly bile salts. Controlled therapeutic trials have demonstrated that sucralfate 1g 4 times daily is effective in increasing the rate of healing of duodenal and gastric ulcer over a period of 4 to 8 weeks. Trials comparing sucralfate and cimetidine have not found any significant difference in efficacy between the drugs in

The preventive effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor, cefephim, and sucralfate on bacterial translocation in experimentally induced acute pancreatitis were investigated. Forty male Wistar albino rats were used in this study. For each rat, the pancreatobiliary ductus was ligated and hence acute pancreatitis was induced. In the control group, no further procedure was performed. Meanwhile, cefephim as an antibiotic, filgrastim, which is a colony-stimulating factor, and sucralfate were given to the other groups at the specified doses. To inhibit bacterial translocation by preserving the

One hundred and two patients, who obtained relief from their duodenal ulcer symptoms with sucralfate (Antepsin R) in a dosage of 2 g b.i.d. for four weeks, were randomized to maintenance therapy with sucralfate 2 g at bedtime or a placebo for one year or until possible recurrence of symptoms. Ninety-four patients completed the study, 46 on sucralfate and 48 on the placebo. Eighteen of the sucralfate-treated patients (39%) experienced relapse of symptoms, as did 36 (75%) of the placebo treated patients. This difference was significant (p = 0.0008). In the sucralfate group most of the symptoms r

Adenosine deaminase activity was studied in the gastric mucosa of patients with peptic ulcer in relation to ulcer localisation and treatment with ranitidine or sucralfate. Enzyme activities observed in the corpus mucosa were higher at a distance of over 2 cm from the ulcer margin than that recorded close to the ulcer. A significant decrease in adenosine deaminase activity was found after treatment with ranitidine but not with sucralfate. In the antral mucosa, enzyme activity was constant in all the groups observed. The evaluation of adenosine deaminase activity in gastric mucosa can be useful

The efficacy of ranitidine (150 mg nocte), and sucralfate (1 g tds) as maintenance therapy to prevent gastric ulcer relapse was evaluated in a 12 month trial in 363 patients. The relapse rates were 8.8% at three months, 14.7% at six months, 18.1% at nine months, and 21.0% at 12 months for the ranitidine group and 14.7%, 21.3%, 29.9%, and 30.2% respectively for the sucralfate group. At nine and 12 months the cumulative relapse rates for the ranitidine group were significantly lower than those for the sucralfate group (p less than 0.05). In both groups ulcers recurred mainly from red scars obser

Aphthous ulcers are common, painful lesions that affect the oral mucosa and for which no successful treatment has been found. Sucralfate, which acts by locally binding with the proteins at the base of an ulcer to provide a protective covering, has been suggested as a treatment for aphthous ulcers. Forty-five subjects with active aphthous ulcers were recruited into this double-blind study designed to compare treatment of aphthous ulcers using sucralfate or placebo in a powdered spray. Measures of ulcer diameter and area were recorded before and after four days of treatment and the subjects comp

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that, in patients at high risk for radiation esophagitis (RE), giving sucralfate prophylactically would reduce the need for opioid pain medication.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Patients were enrolled from January 2023 to April 2025 at a single tertiary care center. Patients were randomized to receive 1 g twice a day within the first 5 fractions of radiation therapy (RT), with frequency increased during RT at the clinician's discretion, or standard supportive care. The proportion of patients who took any opioids over the previous 24 hours at the end of the treatment course w

OBJECTIVE: At present there are no well-established pharmacological approaches in the management of post-cholecystectomy alkaline reactive gastritis. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of sucralfate versus rabeprazole or no treatment on dyspeptic symptoms and endoscopic/histological signs in a population of patients with a history of cholecystectomy and evidence of alkaline reactive gastritis.
METHODS: Sixty dyspeptic patients fulfilling the following criteria of inclusion took part in this study: (1) a history of cholecystectomy; (2) no use of anti-inflammatory steroidal and non-
