Protective effects of sunscreen (50+) and octatrienoic acid 0.1% in actinic keratosis and UV damages.

Actinic keratosis is a form of dysplastic epidermal lesion resulting from chronic and excessive UV exposure with a certain risk of becoming cancerous. Current guidelines advocated the use of sunscreens to prevent photodamage. An efficient photoprotection must involve both primary protective factors such as UV filters and secondary factors (eg, antioxidants) able to disrupt the photochemical and genetic cascade triggered by UVs. An in vitro model of human skin (Phenion FT) was used to assess the photoprotective potential of a sunscreen containing inorganic sun-filters (50+ SPF) and 0.1% octatri

Sunscreen Product Performance and Other Determinants of Consumer Preferences.

IMPORTANCE: Sunscreen use is a modifiable behavior that can help reduce the risk for skin cancer, prevent sunburns, mitigate photoaging, and treat photosensitive dermatoses. A better understanding of consumer sunscreen preferences would inform dermatologists in their own recommendations. OBJECTIVE: To determine the characteristics and the most commonly cited positive and negative features of highly rated sunscreens described by consumers. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The top 1 percentile of sunscreen products on Amazon.com as of December 2015 was selected according to average consumer

Sun exposure and protection practices in children after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: A Survey-Based Cross-Sectional Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) patients are at an increased risk for skin cancers. Sun exposure is a significant modifiable environmental risk factor. While patient education on sun protection and avoidance behaviors with regular dermatology evaluations are crucial for pediatric HSCT patients, the real-life practice of these sun-protection recommendations in this patient population compared to their peers is unknown. METHODS: A survey-based cross-sectional cohort study was performed in pediatric HSCT patients seen at the Dana-Farber Cancer Insti

Application habits and practices of regular sunscreen users in the United States: Results of an online survey.

A nationwide online survey assessed claimed usage of sunscreen products in 2283 self-identified regular sun protection factor (SPF) consumers (RSPFC) in the United States. Subjects applied sunscreen most frequently when spending more than 3 h in the sun. Sunscreen usage peaks during the summer, with sunny weather prompting 99% usage of beach/recreational SPF products but drops to approximately 50% and 30% on partly cloudy and cloudy days, respectively, regardless of SPF product category. About half of RSPFC augment sunscreen product usage by limiting time in the sun and wearing a hat. SPF prod

A novel proposal for labelling sunscreens based on compliance and performance.

OBJECTIVE: To propose a new way of classifying sunscreens, which combines the labelled SPF with an objective measure of compliance. METHODS: The in vitro determination of uniformity of sunscreen application was combined with an in vivo measure of applied thickness to derive a Compliance Factor for each of 10 sunscreens. RESULTS: The predicted SPF resulting from real-life application of each sunscreen product, which is termed the SPF(in vivo veritas), was calculated from the Compliance Factor and the labelled SPF. It was shown that for a number of products, there is expected to be a significa

The Preventive Value of Sun Protection.

BACKGROUND: With more than 200,000 new cases per year, skin tumours have been the most frequently reported cancers in Germany for years. We performed a systematic review to summarise the current evidence concerning the preventive value of regular sunscreen use. METHODS: Systematic literature review of controlled and randomised controlled trials were performed in Ovid Embase and Ovid Medline on 21 January 2020. We included studies evaluating the effectiveness of sunscreens on epithelial skin cancer, actinic keratosis or photoageing, or side effects in humans. RESULTS: Five eligible trials, ea

[Sun protection with sunscreens].

Sunscreen is the most common way of protecting the skin against ultraviolet radiation damage from the sun. The Danish Health Authorities recommends using at least sun protection factor (SPF) 30 in Denmark. The SPF indicates how much the UV dose is reduced when 2 mg/cm2 sunscreen is applied to the skin. The average Dane uses only a fourth of the recommended amount, resulting in a SPF 50 providing a real SPF of only 2.6 (Fourth root of 50). To obtain optimal sun protection, increased layer thickness is of crucial importance, which is why this review recommends applying sunscreen twice in the mor

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet (UV) rays are more intense at high-altitude regions. Exposure to intense UV rays is a major risk factor for skin damage and skin cancer. The university students (young adults) have limited awareness of sun protection measures, leading to persistent gaps in their knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP). This study evaluates the KAP of sun exposure and protection measures among female students at King Khalid University in Abha, Saudi Arabia. OBJECTIVES: To assess students' understanding of sun exposure risks and protective measures, to identify students' attitudes towa

Study of sunbathing habits in children and adolescents: application to the prevention of melanoma.

Excessive sun exposure in the first 15 years of life has been shown to be a determinant risk factor for melanoma. This study was conducted on a randomly selected sample of 200 adolescents (13-14 years old) and 150 children (3 years old) in Marseille (South of France). Children and adolescents were examined and interviewed (mothers answered for young children). Our results show that a large number of highly sensitive children were not identified as such by their parents and most adolescents do not realize or at least admit being highly sun sensitive. Adequate sun protection measures were used i

Young park users' attitudes and behaviour to sun protection.

The increase in skin cancer prevalence globally has prompted a range of health promotion sun safety initiatives. An area where evidence has been lacking is on the long-term impact of some of these initiatives on the attitudes and sun protection behaviour of young adults and of the sun protection measures used by people using city parks. This article disseminates a study that examined the knowledge, attitude and behaviour of 18- to 28-year-old Caucasian park users. An interview questionnaire was used with behaviour validation incorporated to corroborate the results and reduce recall bias. A cro

Are current guidelines for sun protection optimal for health? Exploring the evidence.

Exposure of the skin to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main risk factor for skin cancer, and a major source of vitamin D, in many regions of the world. Sun protection messages to minimize skin cancer risks but avoid vitamin D deficiency are challenging, partly because levels of UV radiation vary by location, season, time of day, and atmospheric conditions. The UV Index provides information on levels of UV radiation and is a cornerstone of sun protection guidelines. Current guidelines from the World Health Organization are that sun protection is required only when the UV Index is 3 or greate

Sun exposure and protection behaviors in urban and rural long-term melanoma survivors.

Given the increased risk for another occurrence of melanoma among melanoma survivors, safe sun behaviors are important. Little data exist about differences in sun behaviors among melanoma survivors residing in urban versus rural communities. We wanted to describe differences in sun exposure and protection behaviors by urban/rural status among melanoma survivors. We conducted a secondary data analysis of 724 melanoma survivors who participated in a cross-sectional survey. Unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression models assessed urban versus rural differences in sun exposure and protection be

Photoprotection.

The deleterious effect of ultraviolet radiation on humans has increased the need for photoprotection. Sunscreens are widely used as photo protective agents. They are divided into chemical sunscreens which absorb high-energy ultraviolet rays and physical blockers which reflect or scatter light. Effectiveness of sunscreens depends upon sun protection factor and its substantivity. Clothing is also important for sun protection and its effectiveness is measured by Ultraviolet Protection Factor. There are many other agents with photo protective properties, which range from antioxidants to plant extr

Application of sunscreen--theory and reality.

We present research on sunscreen use with possible pitfalls and discuss theory vs. reality. A literature review in PubMed was conducted using the terms 'sunscreen application', 'sunscreen use' and 'sun protection factor'. The sun protection factor (SPF) of sunscreens are tested using a thickness of 2 mg/cm(2) , but investigations show that sunscreen under natural conditions is applied insufficiently with amounts about 0.39 to 1.0 mg/cm(2) , which decreases the protection factor considerably. It has been shown that early reapplication or use of very high SPF (70-100) may partly compensate for t

Educational interventions to promote sun-protection behaviors in adolescents in the United States: A systematic review.

The most prevalent modifiable risk factor for skin cancer is cumulative lifetime exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, supporting the development of interventions promoting the early adoption of sun-protection behaviors. This systematic review summarizes behavioral interventions designed to promote sun-protection behaviors and reduce harmful UV exposure among U.S. adolescents. Ten studies describing 15 intervention arms were ultimately included in this review and comprised seven cross-sectional studies, a cohort study, a quasi-experimental study, and a randomized controlled trial. Sunlight and protection of the skin.

Sunburn, wrinkling and malignancies are the frequent results of excessive sun exposure. Photosensitivity and photoallergic or phototoxic reactions are less commonly observed. Sunscreens containing para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA), PABA esters and benzophenones offer substantial protection, allowing even fair-skinned persons to participate freely in outdoor activities. These products are now rated and assigned a sun protection factor (SPF). Their routine use should be encouraged.

[A cross-sectional study of the impact of educational information on topical photoprotection habits in medical students].

OBJECTIVES: Skin cancer (melanoma and non-melanoma) is the most common cancer in humans, with melanoma being the most aggressive. Due to the fact that ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure is the only adjustable aetiological factor, UV protection is the essential preventive measure. Based on these grounds, a study was conducted in order to compare three population groups with different levels of knowledge about UV protection, as well as to determine any differences in sun exposure habits, and the level of awareness of the damaging effects of the sun on the skin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observ
