The Effect of Ultrasound, Oxygen and Sunlight on the Stability of (-)-Epigallocatechin Gallate.

(-)-Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), is the main catechin found in green tea, and has several beneficial effects. This study investigated the stability of EGCG aqueous solution under different stored and ultrasonic conditions to determine whether it can be used with an ultrasonic dental scaler to treat periodontal infection. Four concentrations (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 2 mg/mL) of EGCG aqueous solution were prepared and stored under four different conditions (A: Exposed to neither sunlight nor air, B: Exposed to sunlight, but not air, C: Not exposed to sunlight, but air, D: Exposed to sunlight and ai

Exposure to sunlight reduces the risk of myopia in rhesus monkeys.

Exposure to sunlight has recently been postulated as responsible for the effect that more time spent outdoors protects children from myopia, while early life exposure to natural light was reported to be possibly related to onset of myopia during childhood. In this study, we had two aims: to determine whether increasing natural light exposure has a protective effect on hyperopic defocus-induced myopia, and to observe whether early postnatal exposure to natural light causes increased risk of refractive error in adolescence. Eight rhesus monkeys (aged 20-30 days) were treated monocularly with hyp

Low exposure to sunlight is a risk factor for Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Low sunshine exposure might contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). AIM: To assess the geographic distribution of IBD incidence in relation to sunshine exposure in France to test the hypothesis that higher sun exposure is associated with lower IBD risk. METHODS: Using the national health insurance database, incidence rates of Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) were estimated for each of the 94 French administrative areas ('départements'), between 2000 and 2002. The surface UV radiation intensity was obtained by combining modelling and sat

Epidemiology of melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer--the role of sunlight.

Melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) are now the most common types of cancer in white populations. Both tumor entities show an increasing incidence rate worldwide but a stable or decreasing mortality rate. The rising incidence rates of NMSC are probably caused by a combination of increased sun exposure or exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, increased outdoor activities, changes in clothing style, increased longevity, ozone depletion, genetics and in some cases, immune suppression. A dose-dependent increase in the risk of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the skin was found associated wit

The etiology of sunlight-induced melanoma in Xiphophorus hybrid fish.

In contrast to sunlight-induced squamous cell carcinoma the etiology of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is not well understood. In particular, the role that sunlight exposure and DNA damage play in the initiation of this deadly form of cancer is an open question. Early UV carcinogenesis studies in the Xiphophorus backcross hybrid fish model by Richard Setlow indicated that direct DNA damage caused by exposure to the UVB component of sunlight is necessary and sufficient for melanoma formation. Subsequent studies by Setlow suggested that monochromatic UVA radiation that is not directly absorb

The mechanism of sunlight-mediated inactivation of Bacillus thuringiensis crystals.

Detailed photostability studies were carried out using purified delta-endotoxin crystals from Bacillus thuringiensis subspecies HD-1 and HD-73. The mechanism and time course of sunlight inactivation was investigated by: (a) monitoring the tryptophan damage in the intact crystals by Raman spectroscopy, (b) amino acid analysis and (c) biological assays using insects. The results demonstrate that, for purified HD-1 or HD-73 crystals, the 300-380 nm range of the solar spectrum is largely responsible for bringing about crystal damage and consequent loss of toxicity. Purified Bacillus thuringiensis

Epidemiological evaluation of sunlight as a risk factor of lip cancer.

A total of 3,169 cases of lip cancer in males and 303 cases in females were diagnosed in Finland and reported to the Finnish Cancer Registry in 1953-73. The diagnosis was verified histologically in 95% of the cases in males and in 92% in females. The mean annual age-adjusted incidence rate was 7·3/10(5) in males and 0·5/10(5) in females. The annual incidence for males has decreased since the early 1960s. The decrease involved all age groups and was not due to a cohort effect. Only a very slight decrease in the risk was observable in females. The incidence was clearly higher in rural than in ur

Simulated sunlight exposure as a prerequisite for the biodegradation of persistent microplastics.

The environmental fate and biodegradability of microplastics (MPs) are key concerns in regulatory and scientific contexts. Standard biodegradation testing effectively evaluate microbial decomposition, but overlook crucial abiotic processes, particularly photooxidation, which may significantly alter polymer structures and their susceptibility to microbial breakdown. Therefore, we investigated how simulated sunlight exposure influences the subsequent (bio)degradability of radiolabeled 14C-polyurea (PUA) microcapsules and 14C-linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) particles. Using standardized O

A Randomized Trial of Phototherapy with Filtered Sunlight in African Neonates.

BACKGROUND: Sequelae of severe neonatal hyperbilirubinemia constitute a substantial disease burden in areas where effective conventional phototherapy is unavailable. We previously found that the use of filtered sunlight for the purpose of phototherapy is a safe and efficacious method for reducing total bilirubin. However, its relative safety and efficacy as compared with conventional phototherapy are unknown. METHODS: We conducted a randomized, controlled noninferiority trial in which filtered sunlight was compared with conventional phototherapy for the treatment of hyperbilirubinemia in term

Interrogating the ultrafast dynamics of an efficient dye for sunlight conversion.

We report on studies of the recently synthesized compound (TPC1) with a promising potential use in dye-sensitized solar cells. We used steady-state as well as femtosecond (fs) to nanosecond (ns) time-resolved emission techniques to understand its behaviour under different conditions of solvation and light excitation. In polar solvents the equilibrium between TPC1 normal and anion structures was found to depend on solvent H-bond acceptor ability and concentration of the dye. We observed a correlation between the contribution of the normal form in the total absorption spectrum and solar energy c

Seborrheic keratosis in the Korean males: causative role of sunlight.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are common epidermal tumors in the white population over 40 years. The etiology of SKs is not well known; however, exposure to sunlight was suggested to play a role in the development of them. To our knowledge, no well-designed study has been undertaken in order to investigate the clinical characteristics of SKs in a brown-skinned Korean population. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence and clinical features of SKs in the Korean males and to investigate the possible relationship of SKs with sun exposure and possible risk factors of de

Sunlight: an environmental toxin for humans. A primer to advise patients.

Sunlight causes acute toxic effects such as sunburn, local and systemic immune suppression, and long-term adverse effects including photoaging and skin cancer. The degree of damage depends on the overall exposure-dose and individual susceptibility. Various strategies should be employed to minimize sun-exposure damage, including proper use of sunscreens and exposure avoidance. Public education might best be focused on protecting children and promoting awareness of photoaging changes in adults.

The relationship between malignant melanoma of skin and exposure to sunlight.

Malignant melanomas of the skin are becoming more common. Earlier diagnosis has led to better individual prognoses, but this has not prevented the death rate in the population from rising. This paper brings up-to-date studies on the etiology of malignant melanoma, and supplements various fuller but earlier reviews. Melanoma risk is increased in lightly pigmented people who burn in the sun and do not tan well. People with an increased number of nevi are also at increased risk. Latitude of residence is important, risk in white populations increasing with distance from the poles. Phenotypic facto

Sunlight and other risk factors for cataracts: an epidemiologic study.

A case control study was conducted in North Carolina to explore the relation between individual exposure to sunlight and the risk of cataracts. One hundred thirteen cases and 161 controls aged 40-69 at diagnosis were studied. Sunlight exposure was inferred from interview data on residency and time spent in the sun, combined with solar radiation data from the National Climatic Data Center. Sunlight exposure was very slightly related to all types of opacities combined. Although the numbers of cases with each type of opacity was small, the risk of cataracts was slightly increased in medium and hi

Photochemotherapy of psoriasis using methoxsalen and sunlight. A controlled study.

Fifty-one patients with psoriasis were treated with oral methoxsalen and sunlight exposure. Twelve of these patients received either methoxsalen or placebo prior to whole-body exposure. The remainder were treated with methoxsalen and sunlight to one side of the body and sunlight alone to the other. The conventional dose of methoxsalen (0.6 mg/kg) was compared with a low dose (0.3 mg/kg). Oral methoxsalen when used in the higher dose followed by sun exposure is an effective treatment for psoriasis. Accurate ultraviolet dosimetry is essential to avoid phototoxic burns.
