[Cytomegalovirus enteritis and colitis in nonimmunodepressed patients, a primary disease or superinfection?].

Cytomegalovirus disease is an opportunistic infection that is seen in patients with inmunodeficiencies. The group most commonly affected are AIDS and transplanted patients. Only a few cases of cytomegalovirus disease in non-immunocompromised patients have been reported. In localized disease, the gastrointestinal tract is the most frequently affected. We report two cases of acute abdomen caused by cytomegalovirus enteritis and colitis (histopathological diagnosis) without any underlying immune disorder. The role that the cytomegalovirus infection might play in the development of the clinical ma

Breakdown and exclusion of superinfecting T-even bacteriophage in Escherichia coli.

In bacterial strains containing the deoxyribonuclease endonuclease I (endonuclease I(+) strains), 70 to 80% of the injected superinfecting T-even phage deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is rapidly degraded to oligonucleotides having an average chain length of 8, the same value as that obtained by endonuclease I digestion of purified T-even phage DNA in vitro. In endonuclease I(-) strains, less than 5% of the injected superinfecting T-even phage DNA is degraded to acid-soluble components. The superinfecting phage DNA is, however, fragmented into a large segment having a molecular weight of about 90 x

Hepatic flares in chronic hepatitis C: spontaneous exacerbation vs hepatotropic viruses superinfection.

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes an acute infection that is frequently asymptomatic, but a spontaneous eradication of HCV infection occurs only in one-third of patients. The remaining two-thirds develop a chronic infection that, in most cases, shows an indolent course and a slow progression to the more advanced stages of the illness. Nearly a quarter of cases with chronic hepatitis C (CHC) develop liver cirrhosis with or without hepatocellular carcinoma. The indolent course of the illness may be troubled by the occurrence of a hepatic flare, i.e., a spontaneous acute exacerbation of CHC due

HIV-1 sequence evolution in vivo after superinfection with three viral strains.

With millions of people infected worldwide, the evolution of HIV-1 in vivo has been the subject of much research. Although recombinant viruses were detected early in the epidemic, evidence that HIV-1 dual infections really occurred came much later. Dual infected patients, consisting of coinfected (second infection before seroconversion) and superinfected (second infection after seroconversion) individuals, opened up a new area of HIV-1 evolution studies. Here, we describe the in-depth analysis of HIV-1 over time in a patient twice superinfected with HIV-1, first with a subtype B (B2) strain an

Profound suppression of chronic hepatitis C following superinfection with hepatitis B virus.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) share similar transmission routes; thus, coinfection is frequent. The consequences of acute HBV infection in patients with chronic hepatitis C are unknown. METHODS: We describe a 47-year-old male with chronic hepatitis C who acquired HBV and then spontaneously and apparently completely cleared HCV but developed chronic hepatitis B. Five serum samples collected over 14 months and lymphoid cells obtained after acquiring HBV were tested for HCV and HBV by both standard assays and ultra-sensitive polymerase chain reaction/nucleic aci

Measles virus superinfection immunity and receptor redistribution in persistently infected NT2 cells.

A recombinant measles virus (MV) expressing red fluorescent protein (MVDsRed1) was used to produce a persistently infected cell line (piNT2-MVDsRed1) from human neural precursor (NT2) cells. A similar cell line (piNT2-MVeGFP) was generated using a virus that expresses enhanced green fluorescent protein. Intracytoplasmic inclusions containing the viral nucleocapsid protein were evident in all cells and viral glycoproteins were present at the cell surface. Nevertheless, the cells did not release infectious virus nor did they fuse to generate syncytia. Uninfected NT2 cells express the MV receptor

Events related to Epstein-Barr virus binding and superinfection of Raji cells.

Raji cells, a CR2-positive Burkitt lymphoma cell line, incubated in normal human serum, activate C3 and fix C3-derived fragments. The presence of these molecules on the cell surface does not affect subsequent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) binding but it prevents superinfection. On the other hand, EBV superinfection is enhanced if Raji cells were incubated with heat-inactivated serum whose C3 fragments may bind only through receptor-binding sites. These results indicate that the region on cell surface offering the covalent site to C3 fragments would be essential for EBV superinfection. Incubation of

The effect of bacterial superinfection on lung function after diffuse alveolar damage.

Although bacterial infection is very common in patients with adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), the effects of infection on the clinical course of ARDS are unknown. We have studied the effects of gram-negative bacillary infections in 21 baboons during periods of prolonged anesthesia and ventilatory support. Sixteen animals received oleic acid, 0.04 to 0.06 ml/kg intravenously; 7 developed no infections, 5 developed nosocomial pneumonias, and 4 inadvertently received intravascular infusions of Serratia marcescens. Five uninjured animals were studied; all developed pneumonia. In the abs

Severe Bacterial Superinfection of Influenza Pneumonia in Immunocompetent Young Patients: Case Reports.

Influenza can lead to or coexist with severe bacterial pneumonia, with the potential to permanently damage lung tissue, refractory to conservative treatment in the post-COVID-19 period. It can lead to serious complications; therefore, annual vaccinations are recommended. This case series with a literature review pertains to two young female patients with an insignificant past medical history, who required emergency lobectomy due to bacterial complications after influenza infection. Urgent lobectomy proves to be a feasible therapeutic option for selected patients with pleural complications.

Eicosanoid-Activated PPARα Inhibits NFκB-Dependent Bacterial Clearance During Post-Influenza Superinfection.

Secondary bacterial infection (superinfection) post influenza is a serious clinical complication often leading to pneumonia and death. Eicosanoids are bioactive lipid mediators that play critical roles in the induction and resolution of inflammation. CYP450 lipid metabolites are anti-inflammatory lipid mediators that are produced at an excessive level during superinfection potentiating the vulnerability to secondary bacterial infection. Using Nanostring nCounter technology, we have defined the targeted transcriptional response where CYP450 metabolites dampen the Toll-like receptor signaling in

COVID-19-associated facial cutaneous mucormycosis superinfection: A potentially life-threatening disease.

A 49-year-old male was involved in an accident and an abdominal computer tomographic examination revealed papillary renal cell carcinoma of the right kidney. During hospitalization, the patient was infected with COVID-19. In the following COVID-19 treatment, a black dot developed on the right side of the head and face. Antifungal therapy and surgical debridement were initiated and gradual improvement was observed.

Mechanisms of Bacterial Superinfection Post-influenza: A Role for Unconventional T Cells.

Despite the widespread application of vaccination programs and antiviral drug treatments, influenza viruses are still among the most harmful human pathogens. Indeed, influenza results in significant seasonal and pandemic morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, severe bacterial infections can occur in the aftermath of influenza virus infection, and contribute substantially to the excess morbidity and mortality associated with influenza. Here, we review the main features of influenza viruses and current knowledge about the mechanical and immune mechanisms that underlie post-influenza secondary bac

Variable Effect of HIV Superinfection on Clinical Status: Insights From Mathematical Modeling.

HIV superinfection (infection of an HIV positive individual with another strain of the virus) has been shown to result in a deterioration of clinical status in multiple case studies. However, superinfection with no (or positive) clinical outcome might easily go unnoticed, and the typical effect of superinfection is unknown. We analyzed mathematical models of HIV dynamics to assess the effect of superinfection under various assumptions. We extended the basic model of virus dynamics to explore systematically a set of model variants incorporating various details of HIV infection (homeostatic targ
