[Purpose] This study was conducted in order to investigate the effect of repetitive passive movement and repetitive active movement on proprioception in forearm supination. [Subjects] This study had a cross-sectional design. Twenty-three right-handed healthy subjects were recruited. All subjects randomly received both repetitive passive movement and repetitive active movement (repetitive passive/active movement at 120°/s with 60 repetitions over a 0-80° range). Active and passive joint repositioning of all subjects was measured using the error score for position sense, both before and after re

BACKGROUND: Geriatric patients' (defined as those older than 65 years old) inherent comorbidities, functional limitations, and bone quality present obstacles to successful clinical outcomes for operatively treated supination external rotation (SER) ankle fractures. We retrospectively reviewed a prospectively collected series of SER injuries between 2004 and 2010. This is a comparison of the radiographic and clinical outcomes of our geriatric (27 patients) and nongeriatric (81 patients) populations. We hypothesized that geriatric patients would have worse outcomes when compared to nongeriatric

INTRODUCTION: Ankle fractures are among the most common musculoskeletal injures. These fractures occur with an overall age- and sex-adjusted incidence rate around 180 per 100 000 person-years. The most frequent mechanism is considered to be supination-external rotation (60 to 80% of all ankle fractures) consisting of pathologic external rotation of the foot initially placed in some degree of supination. According to Lauge-Hansen classification, ankle joint structures are damaged in a sequence where the final, stage IV injuries, represents transverse fracture of the medial malleolus or its equi

Acute compartment syndrome is a limb-threatening condition if not recognized and treated promptly. Appropriate management includes early fasciotomy, which often results in better functional outcomes. Although there are many causes of compartment syndrome, the common findings are significant pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. Diagnosis is usually based on physical findings in the setting of a compelling history. Before surgical intervention, the diagnosis is usually confirmed by measuring elevated compartment pressures. The patient described in this case report developed acute compart

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is a heterogeneous disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway obstructions during sleep. Positional OSA (POSA) and non-positional OSA are major subgroups that differ in clinical, polysomnographic, and treatment aspects. Furthermore, POSA can be classified into supine-isolated POSA (siPOSA) and supine-predominant POSA (spPOSA), which exhibit distinct characteristics. This study compares POSA and non-POSA patients, as well as siPOSA and spPOSA subgroups, focusing on their clinical, demographic, and polysomnographic differences.

Rationale: About 20-35% of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have supine-isolated OSA, for which supine sleep avoidance could be an effective therapy. However, traditional supine discomfort-based methods show poor tolerance and compliance to treatment and so cannot be recommended. Supine alarm devices show promise, but evidence to support favorable adherence to treatment and effectiveness at reducing excessive daytime sleepiness compared with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains limited. Objectives: To establish if alarm-based supine-avoidance treatment in patients with

BACKGROUND: Most of modified posteromedial approaches require prone position for the treatment of pilon fractures. We describe the technique of modified posteromedial approach under supine position. The goal of the study was to compare the radiographic and clinical outcomes of prone-supine versus supine position for the treatment of pilon fractures via modified posteromedial approach combined with anterolateral approach.
METHODS: A total of 50 retrospectively consecutive pilon fractures that underwent open reduction internal fixation via modified posteromedial approach combined with anterolat

The aim of the study was to assess the sympathovagal balance in group of 27 patients without significant structural heart disease after an attack of atrial fibrillation. The investigation was performed using spectral analysis of heart rate variability during examination under conditions of different orthostatic loads in single phases, called the supine-standing- supine test. The findings were compared with a group of healthy persons. These revealed a significantly decreased total spectral power (430.7 vs 1558.0 ms(2) supine1; 477.6 vs 1042,5 ms(2) standing; 567.5 vs 1948.5 ms(2) supine2), and

INTRODUCTION: Forearm supination deformity is a recognized late sequela of neonatal brachial plexus birth palsy (NBPBP) that can impair functional positioning of the hand and limit activities requiring forearm pronation. Surgical options include forearm osteotomy, tendon rerouting, tendon transfer, and combined procedures. We describe a modified technique combining derotational radial osteotomy with biceps tendon rerouting using cortical button fixation.
METHODS: This was a single-patient technical case report. An 18-year-old male with longstanding fixed forearm supination deformity secondary

PURPOSE: Distal biceps brachii tendon (DBBT) rupture causes elbow weakness in forearm supination and flexion movements. Surgical treatment is indicated for young patients with high functional demands. This study aimed to evaluate forearm supination strength recovery after surgical repair with two different fixation techniques, onlay fixation with suture anchors and inlay with a bicortical button.
METHODS: This was a single-center, prospective, randomized, controlled, study. A total of 40 patients with complete DBBT rupture were enrolled and allocated through block randomization before surgery

Tibialis anterior tendon transfer (TATT) is a recognised procedure for the treatment of recurrent congenital talipes equinovarus. The most common technique in use requires three skin incisions and breaching of the plantar tissues, risking pressure areas and damage to neurovascular structures. There have been no studies showing the clinical results of the use of a bone anchor to secure the tendon without drilling through the lateral cuneiform. This study presents the largest series of outcomes for such a procedure. Retrospective case series. Electronic records for all children under 18 undergoi

INTRODUCTION: There are few published studies that investigate the surgical treatment of supination-adduction (SAD, AO/OTA 44A2.3) ankle fractures. The purpose of this study was to describe the complications and outcomes following operative fixation of SAD type 2 ankle fractures.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified all SAD-2 ankle fractures that presented at our institution's two hospitals from 2006-2018. Demographics, operative data, and complications (deep infection, superficial infection, delayed union, failure of fixation, and unplanned reoperation) were recorded for all patients. Lastly

BACKGROUND: Compared with single-incision (SI) distal biceps repair, double-incision (DI) repair has been described as permitting a more anatomic repair. We hypothesized that DI repair would result in greater terminal supination torque compared with SI repair for acute distal biceps ruptures.
METHODS: Patients were included if they sustained an isolated, acute distal biceps rupture repaired between January 2012 and December 2017. Isometric forearm supination torque in 4 positions was measured using a validated uniaxial torque-testing device. Testing took place at least 12 months from surgery.

The aim of this study was to assess whether cerebral palsy patients can use biceps brachii for supination during movement tasks requiring supination and pronation. 3D upper extremity kinematic and EMG-data of 12 patients (mean age 13 y 8 mo ± 36 mo) were compared to 10 healthy age-matched controls. Significant difference in biceps brachii activation between maximal isolated pronation and supination in both groups showed that it is possible for CP patients to use biceps brachii for supination. Performance of reach-to-grasp with either pronation or supination showed similar activation patterns a

The purposes of this study were to 1) describe a dynamic supination splint that does not cross the humeroulnar and humeroradial joints, allowing flexion and extension of the elbow; 2) provide retrospective data on effectiveness of this splint in patients with limited supination; and 3) provide data from radiography and electromyography (EMG) that document this splint's ability to provide a passive supination force. Eleven subjects treated for various elbow and/or wrist fractures leading to losses of forearm supination significantly increased their passive range of motion (PROM) from 34.0 degre

Ninety-four conservatively treated patients with Lauge Hansen Stage II supination-eversion fractures of the ankle were interviewed after 16-25 years. Patients with pain were examined clinically and radiographically. Eighty-nine patients had good and five medium results. Our observations compare well with published reports of open treatment. We conclude that this particular fracture type is so benign that it can be treated closed without reduction.

This study aimed to quantify how much snoring occurs in patients with supine-predominant OSA and the comparative effectiveness of supine-avoidance therapy versus CPAP to reduce objective measures of snoring. Participants had a 1-week in-home sleep posture assessment and a in-home PSG study before being randomised to either CPAP or supine-avoidance therapy for 6-8 weeks, then switched treatments for another 6-8 weeks. Snoring and treatment outcomes were examined in a subgroup of patients with supine dependent snoring. Baseline measurements showed snoring frequency was 48.9 [95% CI 16.7 to 188.7
