Curvature of the left main bronchus caused by postural change from supine to left lateral position.

This study was designed to examine deviation of the bronchus by postural change from supine to lateral position during spontaneous respiration. Fifteen healthy volunteers [13 men and 2 women, mean age: 34 years (range 26-42)] participated. Chest radiograms (anterior-posterior) were acquired in the order of supine, left lateral, and right lateral position. The bilateral bronchus angles and secondary carina angles were measured in the acquired images, and the angles were compared between the supine and lateral positions to evaluate deviation of the bronchus in the lateral position. The left seco

Postero-medial approach procedure in the supine position for one-step anterior and posterior ankle arthroscopy.

Standard arthroscopy of the ankle does not allow to approach at the same time the anterior and posterior compartments. Keeping the patient supine and with the application of judicious traction, anterior ankle arthroscopy allows to examine the various intra-articular structures, but treat is limited only to anterior pathology. Also, it is not possible to explore posterior compartment and posterior hindfoot through an anterior approach. Normally, for those patients in whom both the anterior and posterior compartments were to be operated upon, surgery is stopped, and the patient has to be re-posi

Effects of chest wall loading in supine position on respiratory mechanics in low-compliance ARDS patients.

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a life-threatening condition in critically ill patients. Chest wall loading has been proposed as a potential intervention to improve respiratory mechanics in specific ARDS phenotypes, but evidence from large cohorts is lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the effects of acute chest wall loading on respiratory mechanics in patients with low-compliance ARDS. METHODS: A prospective study included 76 patients with severe pneumonia-induced ARDS (PaO2/FiO2 ≤150, Crs ≤35 mL/cmH2O). A 5 kg sandbag was applied to the anter

The Feasibility of Popliteal Vein Anterior Puncture in Supine Position: A View of Clinical Applied Anatomy.

OBJECTIVE: This study observed the anatomical relation between the popliteal vein and surrounding structures via computed tomography venography (CTV) to determine the optimal position for popliteal vein puncture in the supine position. We then conducted a small follow-up clinical trial to confirm our findings. METHODS: The data on CTV of the lower extremities were collected from 112 patients. The anatomical type, diameter, and confluent location of the popliteal vein were observed to determine the location and angle of the appropriate approach for anterior popliteal vein puncture. The success

Feldenkrais 'Functional Integration' Increases Body Contact Surface in the Supine Position: A Randomized-Controlled Experimental Study.

Feldenkrais 'Functional Integration' (FI) is a widely used type of body work with a focus on the continuous integration of body sensations and awareness with movement. The method is, amongst others, known for improving balance in aging populations, but also for its ability to relax muscles. With participants treated in the supine position FI is potentially changing the surface area of the body in contact with the surface on which a participant is lying. So far, no prior study has assessed this claim. We evaluated objectively and subjectively if a treatment with FI would induce changes in press

Whole breast and regional nodal irradiation in prone versus supine position in left sided breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Prone whole breast irradiation (WBI) leads to reduced heart and lung doses in breast cancer patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy. In this feasibility trial, we investigated the prone position for whole breast + lymph node irradiation (WB + LNI). METHODS: A new support device was developed for optimal target coverage, on which patients are positioned in a position resembling a phase from the crawl swimming technique (prone crawl position). Five left sided breast cancer patients were included and simulated in supine and prone position. For each patient, a treatment plan was made

M-mode echocardiography in supine and standing position in control subjects and patients with auscultatory evidence of mitral valve prolapse but negative supine echocardiography: does sensitivity improve?

Approximately 10-20% of patients with auscultatory evidence of mitral valve prolapse (MVP) have "false negative" echocardiograms. Pharmacological maneuvers do not significantly improve the sensitivity and may cause side effects. It is well known that auscultatory features of MVP change and not uncommonly can be heard only in the standing position. Therefore M-mode echo was performed in both supine and standing positions in 10 normal control subjects and 25 patients of comparable age and sex who had auscultatory evidence of MVP but negative echo in supine position. All 10 control subjects had n

Comparative Effectiveness of Supine Avoidance versus Continuous Positive Airway Pressure for Treating Supine-isolated Sleep Apnea: A Clinical Trial.

Rationale: About 20-35% of patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have supine-isolated OSA, for which supine sleep avoidance could be an effective therapy. However, traditional supine discomfort-based methods show poor tolerance and compliance to treatment and so cannot be recommended. Supine alarm devices show promise, but evidence to support favorable adherence to treatment and effectiveness at reducing excessive daytime sleepiness compared with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) remains limited. Objectives: To establish if alarm-based supine-avoidance treatment in patients with

Supine vs decubitus lateral patient positioning in vertebral fracture assessment.

In vertebral fracture assessment (VFA), lateral scans are obtained with the patient positioned supine (C-arm densitometers) or lateral decubitus (fixed-arm densitometers). We aimed to determine the impact of positioning on image quality and fracture definition. We performed supine and decubitus lateral VFA in 50 postmenopausal women and used the algorithm-based qualitative method to identify vertebral fractures. We compared the 2 techniques for the identification of fractures (kappa analysis) and compared the numbers of unreadable vertebrae (indiscernible endplates) and vertebrae that were pro

A cephalometric and electromyographic study of upper airway structures in the upright and supine positions.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by recurrent upper airway obstruction during sleep, usually in the supine position. To investigate the relationship between upper airway size and genioglossus (GG) muscle activity, upright and supine cephalograms were obtained in 20 OSA patients and 10 symptom-free control subjects. Tongue electromyographic (EMG) recordings were obtained with surface electrodes, and pressure transducers were placed in the 10 symptom-free controls. The tongue cross-sectional area increased 4.3% (p < 0.05), and the oropharyngeal area decreased 36.5% (p < 0.01) when
