Frey syndrome before Frey: the correct history.

OBJECTIVE: To review the chronology of publications on gustatory sweating before Frey's landmark publication. METHODS: Reports on Frey syndrome were reviewed, and all references given to publications before 1950 were obtained and examined. References to prior publications in the obtained articles were similarly reviewed. The cases described in these publications were analyzed for their compatibility with the accepted clinical symptoms of Frey syndrome. RESULTS: Despite numerous references, the case described by Duphenix in 1757 is most probably a traumatic parotid fistula. The first reported

Non-aesthetic uses of botulinum toxin in the head and neck.

INTRODUCTION: The use of botulinum toxin in the specialty of aesthetic surgery in the head and neck is well known. However, it has also been used for other conditions affecting the head and neck, and in recent years its use, as well as the number of relevant applications, has expanded enormously. REVIEW: This article presents a summary of the current range of uses in the laryngeal, pharyngeal, cervical, oromandibular and facial muscles and salivary glands. We highlight particular conditions focusing on dystonia (laryngeal, craniocervical, oromandibular and cervical), multiple system atrophy,

[Frey's syndrome in the allergology consultation].

BACKGROUND: Frey's syndrome is a group of symptoms that include unilateral sweating with malar region and external ear reddening after eating or drinking some food. It is a lesion of the auriculotemporal nerve that is secondary to surgery, parotid gland infection or facial trauma. CLINICAL CASES: Three children between 4 and two and a half years of age: two girls and one boy. They had self-limiting unilateral erythematous facial macules that reached the external ear, without rash, itching, angioedema and gastrointestinal or respiratory symptoms; its onset was associated with the consumption o

Harlequin syndrome: the sudden onset of unilateral flushing and sweating.

Facial flushing and sweating were investigated in five patients who complained of the sudden onset of unilateral facial flushing in hot weather or when exercising vigorously. One patient probably suffered a brainstem infarct at the time that the unilateral flush was first noticed, and was left with a subtle Horner's syndrome on the side opposite to the flush. The other four had no other neurological symptoms and no ocular signs of Horner's syndrome. Thermal and emotional flushing and sweating were found to be impaired on the non-flushing side of the forehead in all five patients whereas gustat

[Minimally invasive surgery for primary hyperhidrosis].

Nine hundred twenty-three thoracoscopic sympathectomies for primary hyperhidrosis were performd in 462 patients (180 men, 282 women). Mean age was 29.2 (11-61) years. Synchronous bilateral sympathectomies were performed in 461 patient: right side alone in 1 patient. We started thoracic sympathectomy for primary hyperhidrosis under a thoracoscope using a 10 mm rigid endoscope in 1992. At present, we perform the surgery using a 3 mm rigid scope. The majority of our patient were satisfied with the result of operation. There is general agreement that postoperative side effect, such as compensatory

Patient benefit from treatment with botulinum neurotoxin A for functional indications in otorhinolaryngology.

The objective of the study was to evaluate patient benefit and health-related quality of life after use of botulinum neurotoxin (BoNT) A for various otorhinolaryngological, functional (non-cosmetic) indications. The design consisted of a survey study of a patient cohort (n = 40) treated with BoNT A for functional indications. Patients were asked to answer the Glasgow Benefit Inventory (GBI), a retrospective questionnaire well validated for measuring the effect of otorhinolaryngological interventions on the health-related quality of life. GBI scores can range from -100 (maximal adverse effect),

Experience with limited endoscopic thoracic sympathetic block for hyperhidrosis and facial blushing.

Endoscopic thoracic sympathetic block (ESB) has recently become a popular modification of sympathetic surgery, as it offers the potential chance of reversibility. In order to reduce side effects such as compensatory sweating limited ESB at the levels of the T2, T3 or T4 ganglia has been recommended (Lin/Telaranta classification). We present our experience and initial results with this technique. From 6/2001 to 2/2003, 184 ESB procedures were performed in 94 patients. ESB4 was carried out in 53 patients for hyperhidrosis (HH) of the upper limb. In 23 patients ESB3 was performed for craniofacial

Improved quality of life after sympathetic block for upper limb hyperhidrosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to assess two disease-specific quality of life (QoL) instruments after limited endoscopic thoracic sympathetic block (TS) at T4 for upper limb hyperhidrosis. METHODS: : Between 2001 and 2005, 112 patients underwent 223 TS procedures in a prospective study. Some 103 patients (92.0 per cent) had palmar, 87 (77.7 per cent) had axillary and 75 (67.0 per cent) had combined hyperhidrosis. QoL questionnaires devised by Keller et al. and Milanez de Campos et al. were employed before and after treatment. Mean(s.d.) follow-up was 21.9(10.1) months. RESULTS: A total

Auriculo-temporal nerve. Clinicopathological relevance to facial-maxillary practice.

Anatomically, the auriculo-temporal nerve (ATN), a peripheral branch of the trigeminal nerve is in close relation to the parotid gland, neck of the mandible, temporal vessels, and sphenomandibular ligament. Fine branches of the ATN are at risk of division during surgical intervention of the parotid gland or condyle of the mandible. "Frey's syndrome", or abnormal gustatory sweating, may be a consequence of injury to the branches of the auriculo-temporal nerve. This uncommon syndrome can also occur with fractures of the temporo-mandibular joint (TMJ), due to the anatomic proximity of the nerve t

Frey syndrome after conservative parotidectomy: Importance of closing the remnant parotid parenchyma.

BACKGROUND: Frey syndrome (FS) is a typical late complication following parotidectomy. Parotid surgery without proper coverage or reconstruction of exposed parotid parenchyma may contribute to the development of FS. Therefore, this study compared the closure versus the non-closure of exposed parotid parenchyma in the occurrence of FS. METHODS: This study included 195 patients with parotid lesions who underwent partial or superficial parotidectomy plus closure or non-closure of exposed parotid parenchyma, both with the application of fibrin glue. Two surgical methods of closure and non-closure

Fat transfer after parotidectomy: fat resorption rates, aesthetic and functional outcomes of en-bloc fat graft versus lipofilling technique.

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of parotidectomy involves the correction of facial contour abnormalities and prevention from Frey Syndrome. Reconstruction of parotidectomy field with autologous fat has not been popular among head and neck surgeons due to unclear predictability of fat resorption rates. The aim of this paper is to compare the fat resorption rates between different fat transfer techniques using radiologic measurements and reviewing the aesthetic and functional outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients, who underwent parotidectomy in Hacettepe University

Extracapsular dissection via sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space approach-a new operative technique for treating clinically benign tumor in the parotid tail.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to introduce extracapsular dissection via the sternocleidomastoid muscle-parotid space approach (ECD-SMPSA) as a modified operative technique for removal of clinically benign tumors from the parotid tail. STUDY DESIGN: The study included 52 patients with clinically benign tumors in the parotid tail, and the patients were divided into 2 groups: one group was treated with ECD-SMPSA and the other with extracapsular dissection (ECD). All of the patients were followed up for at least 2 years. RESULTS: The ECD-SMPSA group had lower incidence of subjective Frey

Frey syndrome in neurofibromatosis 1.

A healthy 18-month-old girl presented with a history of intermittent hemifacial flushing when eating. Her symptom seemed to be exclusively triggered by chewing. Examination revealed cutaneous features of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and mild facial asymmetry. Imaging confirmed cerebral vacuolisation changes seen in NF1 and a left facial plexiform neurofibroma involving the parotid gland. This is the first reported case of Frey syndrome complicating NF1.

Ethics of Frey syndrome: ensuring that consent is truly informed.

Frey syndrome is a widely recognized sequela of parotidectomy with a variable prevalence dependent upon diagnostic criteria. There exists a multitude of strategies for both prevention and treatment. Surgeons are obligated to engage patients in a frank and open discussion of the operative risks, benefits, and alternatives. Due to uncertainty regarding the significance of Frey syndrome postoperatively, the process of informed consent and preoperative decision-making pose a potential ethical quandary. This commentary is designed to heighten the awareness of the preoperative informed consent proce

Lucja Frey--historical relevance and syndrome review.

BACKGROUND: This article documents an objective review ofthe neuro-anatomical, diagnostic and clinical implications of the auriculotemporal syndrome (Frey's syndrome). The incidence of Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy as cited in the literature varies. It may also be a sequela to a variety of inflammatory, infective and traumatic aetiologies. METHOD: An electronic search using the search engine Google, Medline and Pubmed was performed under 'Lucja Frey', 'Gustatory sweating', 'The auriculotemporal syndrome', 'Botulinum toxin'. Relevant papers were systematically reviewed from 1965 to prese
