Psychosocial Syndemic Correlates of Sexual Compulsivity Among Men Who Have Sex with Men: A Meta-Analysis.

Efforts have been made to better understand sexual compulsivity by examining salient psychosocial syndemic correlates, though examination of such factors has yielded inconclusive results. Given that research on sexual compulsivity has predominately involved men who have sex with men (MSM), the aims of the current study were to establish the mean effect sizes of seven psychosocial syndemic indicators with sexual compulsivity, to determine if the effect varied as a function of the type of psychosocial syndemic, and investigate the potential moderating effects using MSM samples. A total of 95 stu

Linking Syndemic Stress and Behavioral Indicators of Main Partner HIV Transmission Risk in Gay Male Couples.

The purpose of the current study was to examine whether syndemic stress in partnered gay men might undermine communication processes essential to the utilization of negotiated safety and other harm reduction strategies that rely on partners' HIV status disclosure. Participants included 100 gay male couples (N = 200 individuals) living in the U.S., who responded to an online survey. Participants completed measures of five syndemic factors (depression, poly-drug use, childhood sexual abuse, intimate partner violence, and sexual compulsivity). They also reported on whether condoms were used durin

Prediction of HIV Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Disadvantaged African American Adults Using a Syndemic Conceptual Framework.

The focus of this paper is on HIV sexual risk taking among a community-based sample of disadvantaged African American adults. The objective is to examine multiple factors associated with sexual HIV risk behaviors within a syndemic conceptual framework. Face-to-face, computer-assisted, structured interviews were conducted with 1535 individuals in Atlanta, Georgia. Bivariate analyses indicated a high level of relationships among the HIV sexual risks and other factors. Results from multivariate models indicated that gender, sexual orientation, relationship status, self-esteem, condom use self-eff

Syndemics of complex risk factors in adolescents: findings from the youth risk behavior survey, 2021.

Syndemic theory posits that multiple, interconnected health behaviors-such as substance use, anxiety, depression, sexual risk behaviors, and societal or social stressors-interact synergistically within specific populations, particularly in those who face social disadvantage. These health behaviors are not isolated, but are shaped and exacerbated by social, economic, and environmental factors. Using data from the 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (N = 17,232), this cross-sectional study examined how the co-occurrence of substance use, mental health challenges, sexual risk behaviors,

The 2024 Lebanon conflict: a multidimensional assessment of syndemic impacts on public health and sustainable development goals.

Lebanon entered the 2024 armed conflict with health, environmental, and social systems already weakened by successive crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, prolonged economic collapse, and the 2020 Beirut Port explosion. This narrative review aimed to synthesize evidence on the documented and anticipated effects of the conflict on public health, healthcare services, the environment, food security, education, and progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Evidence was drawn from peer-reviewed studies and reports issued by governmental institutions and international organizatio

The role of primary care in response to the global liver disease syndemic: a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology Commission.

Liver disease causes substantial global morbidity and mortality, with a growing burden from steatotic liver disease driven by alcohol use and metabolic dysfunction, alongside persisting challenges from chronic viral hepatitis. Liver disease burden is unequal between and within countries, with high rates in people with low socioeconomic status and marginalised groups due to increased exposure to risk factors and compounded by reduced access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Liver disease frequently coexists with multimorbidity-including diabetes, cancer, and mental illness-with bidirecti

Structures of survival: Syndemic pathways to care among people with HIV involved with the criminal legal system.

BACKGROUND: Criminal legal system (CLS) involvement intersects syndemically with HIV, mental illness, substance use, and exposure to violence. Mass incarceration remains both a cause and consequence of racialized health inequities in the U.S. The post-release period is particularly vulnerable for people living with HIV (PLWH) who experience CLS involvement, underscoring the need for care models attuned to their structural and psychosocial contexts. This study examines how syndemic pathways and cumulative life experiences shape HIV care trajectories among people with HIV involved with the CLS.

Syndemic Effects of Covid-19 Lockdown on Chemsex and HIV Among MSM in Malaysia: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Chemsex, sexual activity under the influence of psychoactive substances, remains a major public health concern for men who have sex with men (MSM) globally. In Malaysia's conservative context, the convergence of chemsex and HIV transmission presents complex challenges. This narrative review examines how the Covid-19 pandemic and extended lockdown disrupted HIV services and intensified psychosocial stressors, amplifying chemsex, HIV, and mental health issues among Malaysian MSM. METHODS: A systematic search of international databases (2018-2025) identified relevant studies through

Inequity and vulnerability in Latin American Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations with rheumatic diseases: a syndemic approach.

UNLABELLED: Syndemics are a framework that documents health inequities and vulnerabilities in populations with rheumatic diseases. Compared with other approaches, syndemics are able to conjunctly consider epidemiological, biological, sociodemographic and economic factors, and their interactions. OBJECTIVE: To estimate health inequity and vulnerability among Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMD) in Latin America using the syndemic approach. DESIGN: This is a secondary analysis of a previously published large-scale study on the prevalence o

Understanding the bigger picture: syndemic interactions of the immigrant and refugee context with the lived experience of diabetes and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Providing contextually appropriate care and interventions for people with diabetes and/or obesity in vulnerable situations within ethnocultural newcomer communities presents significant challenges. Because of the added complexities of the refugee and immigrant context, a deep understanding of their realities is needed. Syndemic theory sheds light on the synergistic nature of stressors, chronic diseases and environmental impact on immigrant and refugee populations living in vulnerable conditions. We used a syndemic perspective to examine how the migrant ethnocultural context impacts

Structural Syndemics and Antiretroviral Medication Adherence Among Black Sexual Minority Men Living With HIV.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV antiretroviral treatment (ART) access and uptake have increased among racial/ethnic minority individuals, lower rates of ART adherence and viral suppression persist, especially among Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) compared with their White counterparts. SETTING: Black men who have sex with men living with HIV (BMSM+) residing in Los Angeles County (N = 124) were recruited in-person (eg, clinic) and online (eg, social networking apps). HIV's Syndemic Links With Mental Health, Substance Use, and Violence in an Environment of Stigma and Disparities in Japan.

A syndemics orientation has become a valuable lens through which to understand the complex system dynamics of HIV, HIV's links to other social and health problems, and the design of effective, comprehensive interventions. Using data from a broader ethnographic study of HIV epidemics in the Kansai Region and Tokyo Metropolitan Area of Japan, I found that HIV was synergistically linked with poor mental health, substance use, and violence, suggesting the existence of at least three syndemics. These occurred in an environment of stigma and social and health disparities, particularly for men who ha

Retrospective reports of developmental stressors, syndemics, and their association with sexual risk outcomes among gay men.

Gay and bisexual men (GBM) continue to have a disproportionately higher HIV incidence than any other group in Canada and the United States. This study examined how multiple co-occurring psychosocial problems, also known as a syndemic, contribute to high-risk sexual behavior among GBM. It also examined the impact of early life adversity on high-risk sexual behavior as mediated by syndemic severity. A sample of 239 GBM completed self-report questionnaires at baseline and 6-month follow-up. Syndemic variables included depression, polysubstance use, and intimate partner violence. Early life advers

Risk perception and coping mechanisms by gender identity and education level during the COVID-19 syndemic in Spain.

BACKGROUND: It is important to have a detailed understanding of the association between risk perception, coping mechanisms, and mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 syndemic across axes of inequity such as gender identity and education level. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study among 2,066 adults (≥ 18 years) living in Spain via an online survey from April 8 to May 28, 2021. Anxiety and depression were the main outcomes considered to assess mental health, measured with the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 item (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire 9 item (PHQ-9), respectively

Syndemic Psychosocial Health Conditions Associated with Recent Client-Perpetrated Violence Against Female Entertainment and Sex Workers in Cambodia.

Female entertainment and sex workers (FESW) are vulnerable to violence, which impedes safer sex behaviors and increases risk of HIV. FESW are also disproportionately affected by co-occurring psychosocial health conditions, including substance use, depression, and economic insecurity, which increased risk of exposure to violence. We used a syndemic framework to examine the effects of co-occurring psychosocial conditions on the risk of client-perpetrated physical and sexual violence against FESW. Data were collected among 1198 Cambodian FESW on recent client-perpetrated physical and sexual viole

Syndemic Conditions Reinforcing Disparities in HIV and Other STIs in an Urban Sample of Behaviorally Bisexual Latino Men.

Syndemics research has made great contributions to understanding sexual risk among Latino men who have sex with men. However, such work often combines data for behaviorally bisexual men with data for men with exclusively same-sex partners. Using cross-sectional data from 148 behaviorally bisexual Latino men, this study explored the impact of syndemic factors-polydrug use, childhood sexual abuse, and depression-on sexual risk behaviors and STI incidence. Approximately one-third of participants reported polydrug use, 22% reported childhood sexual abuse, and 26% screened for clinically significan

The Predictive Syndemic Effect of Multiple Psychosocial Problems on Health Care Costs and Utilization among Sexual Minority Women.

Previous studies documenting sexual minority women's disproportionate risk for a range of medical, mental health, and substance use disorders have not provided a predictive framework for understanding their interrelations and outcomes. The present study aimed to address this gap by testing the syndemic effect of co-occurring psychosocial problems on 7-year health care costs and utilization among sexual minority women. The sample was comprised of sexual minority women (N = 341) who were seen at an urban LGBT-affirmative community health center. Medical and mental health care utilization and cos

Syndemic factors associated with HIV risk for gay and bisexual men: comparing latent class and latent factor modeling.

Syndemics theory has been proposed as a framework for understanding the role of multiple risk factors driving the HIV epidemic among gay and bisexual men. Previous studies have examined five syndemic indicators (polydrug use, depression, childhood sexual abuse, sexual compulsivity, and intimate partner violence). Many of these studies have utilized sum scores, the total number of syndemic factors endorsed, to quantify syndemic stress. This approach assumes a unidimensional latent factor and equivalence of factor loadings. It also overlooks the possibility that patterns, or classes, of syndemic
