BACKGROUND: The optimal management of lumbar synovial cysts (LSCs) has always been controversial. Open or minimally invasive partial hemilaminotomy as a direct decompression approach has been widely studied, whereas to our knowledge, there has been no report of an indirect decompression method for LSC.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 60-year-old male complained of chronic low back pain for 2 years. He reported that the pain had been getting worse and started radiating to the bilateral posterior thighs and right lateral calf for 6 months. An ovoid lesion with a hyperintense center attached to the medial s

CASE DESCRIPTION: An approximately 8-month-old female Miniature Lop rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was evaluated because of an acute onset of progressive paraparesis.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: The rabbit was ambulatory paraparetic, and results of neurologic examination were consistent with a myelopathy localizing to the T3-L3 spinal cord segments. Evaluation with CT myelography revealed focal extradural spinal cord compression bilaterally at the level of the articular process joints of T12-L1.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: A Funkquist type A dorsal laminectomy was performed at T12-L1, and the vertebral co

Symptomatic lumbar synovial cysts (LSCs) are a rare cause of degenerative narrowing of the spinal canal, with thecal sac or nerve root compression. True synovial cysts have a thick wall lined by synovial cells, containing granulation tissue, numerous histiocytes, and giant cells. In contrast, pseudo-cysts lack specialized epithelium, have a collagenous capsule filled with myxoid material, and may be classified into ganglion cysts, originating from periarticular fibrous tissues, and ligamentous cysts, arising from the ligamentum flavum or even from the posterior longitudinal ligament. Here we p

Synovial cysts are lesions that usually occur on the wrist, foot and knee. They are rarely involved in the region of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), with only 10 cases reported from 1978 to 2007. The authors report a case of a synovial cyst of the TMJ in a 45-year-old woman. The patient presented with a right preauricular swelling, 1cm anterior to the tragus. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a small oval hypodense mass of soft tissue in the right temporomandibular region with no relation to the condyle. Fine needle aspiration reported a synovial cyst of the TMJ. The patient was taken

We describe a case of cauda equina syndrome caused by synovial cysts and the lithotomy position. A transurethral resection of the prostate was performed under spinal anesthesia in the lithotomy position. We believe that this is the first case report of facet joint synovial cysts and the lithotomy position causing ischemic neurologic injury to the cauda equina. Other etiologies such as needle trauma, neurotoxicity, hematoma, and abscess were not evident. We believe that positioning the patient in the lithotomy position narrowed the cross-sectional area of the spinal canal in a patient with a co

Synovial cysts are fluid-filled masses lined with synovium and located within or about joints. The main symptoms are pain and/or neurological deficits. They can be intraneural or extraneural or develop between or within muscles. Synovial cysts that arise at a distance from a joint raise diagnostic challenges. We report three cases of synovial cysts of the proximal tibiofibular joint, including an intramuscular cyst responsible for paralysis of the anterolateral leg muscles. Tibiofibular synovial cysts are less common than popliteal cysts, and their pathophysiology is poorly understood. Pressur

We report on a 15-year-old boy in whom a spontaneous remission of a symptomatic synovial cyst, possibly emanating from the L4-5 facet joint, was noted. The medical history suggested that sport-related overactivity and/or minor trauma was the underlying cause. Conservative treatment for several months may be one treatment option if the cyst wall is not calcified and the symptoms and signs related to radiculopathy show a gradual decrease.

We observed a case of synovial cyst in the shoulder joint leading to spino-glenoid symptomatology in a weight-lifter. Explorations included standard radiography, echography and magnetic resonance imaging. Differentiation between a true cyst and a pseudo-cyst was basedose presence of a synovial membrane. Mechanical contraints appear to be the most frequently suspected aetiology of spinoglenoid cysts. Echography cannot always confirm the liquid nature of the formation due to the close bone. Magnetic resonance imaging gives good tissue characterization and good topographic analysis. Gadolinium in

Synovial cysts are most frequently found about the knee. Less commonly they have been described at the shoulder, elbow, ankle, and hip joints. Synovial cysts of the shoulder are associated with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic steroid use, Charcot joint disease, and long-standing rotator cuff tears. Although often asymptomatic, patients may present complaining of pain, loss of joint motion, or presence of an unexplained mass. The authors present the case of an elderly man with a very large synovial cyst presenting as an anterior chest wall mass.

Synovial effusions containing cholesterol crystals are uncommon. Most of the few reported cases have been found in patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis. In vitro studies, as well as an animal model, have suggested that cholesterol crystals could have a role in inflammation of the joints. In this report we present a case of seronegative arthritis, complicated by large carpal synovial cysts which contained numerous cholesterol crystals. The long-term presence of the cysts, without evidence of joint destruction, suggests that cholesterol crystal formation is probably a rare epiphenomen

BACKGROUND: The management of lumbar synovial cysts (LSC) has been a controversial topic for many years. Whereas many authors label LSC as markers of instability and thus necessitating fusion, others suggest that decompression alone without fusion is a viable initial treatment option. Our objective was to clarify outcomes in patients undergoing decompression alone and decompression with fusion for symptomatic LSC and identify factors for cyst recurrence.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed of all patients undergoing initial treatment for LSC at a single institution ranging from

OBJECTIVE: Thoracic spine synovial cysts (TSSC) are rare. Only case reports and a few small series, but no systematic review, have been published so far. This article aimed to update all the TSSC cases and analyze data in addition to reporting three cases.
METHODS: This is a retrospective systematic review and metanalysis of reported cases of TSSC, located between T1-2 and T12-L1, until 2024. Data extraction and collection were done by multiple reviewers, and statistical analysis was performed.
RESULTS: A total of 39 reports were identified and 62 cases of TSSC were analyzed, the mean age be

BACKGROUND: Lumbar facet cysts are a benign, degenerative, and fairly uncommon cause for lumbar radiculopathy. The standard surgical treatment for lumbar facet cysts often requires a laminectomy and medial facetectomy which can further destabilize a pathological motion segment. The authors present here a novel technique for transpedicular endoscopic access to the pathology that obviates the need to violate the lamina or facet.
METHODS: Two patient cases are described where the lumbar 4-5 facet cysts arise medial to the pedicle. Percutaneous access to the cysts was established by drilling thro

BACKGROUND: Lumbar synovial cysts can result from spondylosis of facet joints. These cysts can encroach on adjacent nerve roots, causing symptoms of radiculopathy. Currently the only definitive treatment for these symptoms is surgery, which may involve laminectomy or laminotomy, with or without spinal fusion. Surgery has been reported to successfully relieve radicular pain in 83.5% of patients by Zhenbo et al. Little information is available concerning the efficacy and outcome of percutaneous fluoroscopic synovial cyst rupture for treatment of facet joint synovial cysts.
OBJECTIVE: The goal o

Cutaneous metaplastic synovial cyst (CMSC) refers to a cyst lined by metaplastic synovial tissue including villous structures. It is thought to be a tissue reaction to local trauma, and most cases have a history of preceding surgery or trauma. Clinically, most of the lesion is a tender intradermal nodule that is associated with scar tissue. However, dermatologists have difficulty in diagnosing CMSC because CMSC is reported only rarely and its clinical manifestation can be confused with implantational epidermal cyst, suture granuloma or other cutaneous cysts. Thus, a histopathological exam is m

INTRODUCTION: Multiradicular nerve root compression, and long lasting radicular syndrome occur very often. They happen particularly on degenerative spine. Huge synovial cyst of the zygapophyseal joints may account for it, expand in the epidural area and cause radicular syndrome.
EXEGESIS: Two cases of huge synovial cysts spreading into the spinal channel are reported here. Diagnostic and therapeutic modalities are discussed. On degenerative spine, facet joints osteoarthritis may result in synovial cysts. Physical examination findings are radicular syndrome.
CONCLUSION: Huge synovial cysts ma
