Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) as well as tenosynovial giant cell tumor (TGCT) are both diagnosed and described in two forms, namely a localized and diffuse type. They form a diverse group of proliferative lesions in articular synovium and tendon sheaths. The inconsistent terminology impedes communication between patients, orthopedic surgeons, radiologists and pathologists, leading to misunderstandings and delaying treatment. In this paper, we present three cases of PVNS/TGCT (involving the fourth toe extensor tendon sheath, hip joint after resurfacing and flexor hallucis longus tendo

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the semiquantitative and qualitative appearance of pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) and giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath (GCTTS) on 18F-FDG PET/CT.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective review was performed for patients diagnosed with GCTTS, focal PVNS, or diffuse PVNS who underwent PET/CT from 2003 to 2013. SUVmax and SUVmax/SUVmean of the liver (SUVr) were determined for each lesion on all available PET/CTs. Relevant conventional imaging and patient records were reviewed.
RESULTS: Fourteen patients (mean [SD] ag

We report a 24-year-old male who was admitted to the emergency department with an unusual complaint of locked hip joint. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a 3-cm intra-articular synovial nodular mass and a 3.0x2.4x1.6-cm yellow-brownish colored pediculed synovial nodular mass was excised with hip arthroscopy. Pathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pigmented villonodular synovitis. Excision of the mass allowed prompt resolution of the symptoms and there was no sign of recurrence at 3-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) describes a rare disease caused by an abnormal proliferation of the synovial membrane in large and small joints. In order to achieve an optimal result of treatment it is necessary to carry out specific diagnostics and a targeted therapy approach.
OBJECTIVE: This article gives a review of the epidemiology, etiopathogenesis and diagnostic management of PVNS as well as presenting the current therapy and treatment recommendations.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A systematic search of the literature was performed in the databank of the National Center fo

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is an uncommon, benign, tumour-like disorder of unknown etiology affecting synovium-lined joints, tendon sheaths, and bursae. It results in proliferative, locally invasive lesions, usually presenting in monoarticular form in adults. PVNS rarely presents in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The treatment of choice is complete surgical excision of the lesion, followed by immediate reconstruction. We report a case of PVNS with masticatory space involvement, and focus on the pathological aspects and surgical treatment of the lesion.

Disorders of the proximal tibiofibular joint should be kept in mind in the evaluation of lateral knee pain. They include osteoarthrosis, rheumatic disease, traumatic subluxation or dislocation, ganglion or synovial cysts, synostosis, synovial chondromatosis, pigmented villonodular synovitis and hypomobility of the joint. Peroneal nerve can be at risk with pathologies of the joint either by compressive effect or formation of intra-neural ganglion. A case of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the proximal tibiofibular joint was reported which presented with lateral knee pain. It was successfull

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) problems are usually the result of functional disorders. Tumors of the TMJ are rarer entities, the diagnosis of which may be delayed due to a clinical impression of a functional ailment. We report a case of a patient with a recurrent TMJ area lesion diagnosed cytologically as pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), an entity that very rarely involves the TMJ and is usually diagnosed by histology. The differential diagnosis of PVNS in the context of its location in and around the TMJ is also discussed.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a rare benign neoplastic proliferation of synovial tissue which is typically localised and usually responds well to surgery and/or radiotherapy. We present a case of unusually aggressive of PVNS of the hip in a 73-year-old woman.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is a proliferative disorder that may lead to joint destruction and activity limitation. We conducted a retrospective study to determine the long-term results of localized PVNS (LPVNS) treated with arthroscopic excision, specifically with respect to postoperative activity level and symptom resolution. We reviewed the cases of 11 patients who had been treated with arthroscopic excision and partial synovectomy of LPVNS and been followed up for a mean of 112 months. Preoperative and postoperative Ogilvie-Harris scores, Tegner activity level scores, and UCLA

BACKGROUND: Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) is considered to be a neoplastic-like disorder of the synovium histologically characterised by villonodular hyperplasia, resulting in dense fibrosis and haemosiderin deposition. The pathogenesis of the disease is still unknown.
CASE REPORT: A patient presented with severe treatment resistant PVNS of the right knee joint. Several conventional treatment regimens, including open surgical synovectomy and intra-articular injections of yttrium-90 ((90)Y) failed to control the disease. After finding marked tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNF alpha) e

Arthroscopy : the journal of arthroscopic & related surgery : official publication of the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the International Arthroscopy Association2000eng
A 31-year-old woman presented with a 1-year history of recurrent dislocation of the patella. On examination, she was found to have a mass at the medial patellofemoral joint line. Arthroscopy showed this to be a vascular synovial tumor extending into the medial patellofemoral joint and causing lateral deviation of the patella. The mass was resected with resolution of her symptoms and histologic examination showed this to be pigmented villonodular synovitis. There are an increasing number of case reports of these lesions causing varying mechanical symptoms in the knee and they should be consider

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: The authors report their experience about 22 cases of pigmented villonodular synovitis of the knee observed between 1970 and 1997. The authors studied the results of treatments according to localization, evolutionary stage and condition of an early diagnosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Among thirty three cases of pigmented villonodular synovitis treated during the same period the knee was involved in twenty two cases. Diagnosis was done or highly suspected in 13 cases because of significant symptoms (iterative hemarthrosis, bony gap in both articular components of the joint)

BACKGROUND: Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare yet locally invasive disorder impacting synovial tissues. This case report delineates the atypical manifestation of pigmented villonodular synovitis in the talonavicular joint, detailing its diagnostic complexity and successful management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old Iranian patient with a 4-year history of chronic ankle pain, initially diagnosed with degenerative joint disease post-trauma based on imaging, underwent talonavicular fusion surgery. An unexpected pigmented villonodular synovitis mass was encountered during the procedure

A 19-year-old Asian male presented to our emergency department with atraumatic right hip pain radiating to the right groin associated with pain on ambulation. Magnetic resonance imaging of the right hip with and without contrast revealed the diagnosis. Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare, monoarticular benign tumor originating from the synovium of the joint. The treatment is synovectomy of the pathological joint to prevent further disease progression.

Pigmented villonodular synovitis is a rare condition in the adolescent population affecting synovial joints. The knee joint is affected primarily with the diffuse form. The localized form is less commonly encountered. Open and arthroscopic synovectomy lead to similar outcomes and resolution of symptoms. However, recurrence is higher with open procedures. We present a review of the literature examining outcomes of arthroscopic synovectomy.
