Acute Increase in O-GlcNAc Improves Survival in Mice With LPS-Induced Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) resulting from a severe infection that is characterized by immune dysregulation, cardiovascular derangements, and end-organ dysfunction. The modification of proteins by O-linked N-acetylglucosamine (O-GlcNAcylation) influences many of the key processes that are altered during sepsis, including the production of inflammatory mediators and vascular contractility. Here, we investigated whether O-GlcNAc affects the inflammatory response and cardiovascular dysfunction associated with sepsis. Mice received an intraperitoneal injection of lip

The utility of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) for diagnosing sepsis in the immediate postpartum period.

BACKGROUND: The systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis definitions were developed to improve the ability for early detection of infection and sepsis. We studied the incidence of immediate postpartum SIRS and sepsis. We further studied immediate postpartum SIRS as a potential predictor for immediate postpartum sepsis. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of 638 immediate postpartum women who delivered either vaginally or by cesarean section. Multivariate logistic regression was used for statistical analysis. Predictor variables included demographic, labor and delivery, an

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome and prolonged hypoperfusion lesions in an infant with respiratory syncytial virus encephalopathy.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a cause of neurological complications in infants. We report a rare case of RSV encephalopathy in an infant who presented with poor sucking and hypothermia at 17 days of age after suffering from rhinorrhea and a cough for several days. After hospitalization, the patient presented with stupor and hypotonia lasting for at least 24 h, and was intubated, sedated, and ventilated for treatment of pneumonia. These symptoms led to diagnosis of pediatric systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) caused by RSV infection. High-dose steroid therapy was combined wit

Trauma, systemic inflammatory response syndrome, dietary supplements, illicit steroid use and a questionable malignant hyperthermia reaction.

BACKGROUND: Malignant hyperthermia (MH) is a pharmacogenetic disorder of skeletal muscle calcium regulation associated primarily, but not exclusively, with mutations in the skeletal muscle ryanodine receptor. Associated environmental factors, however, may also be important for expression of the syndrome. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 24-yr-old trauma patient developed a fulminant MH crisis after a 3 minute exposure to sevoflurane. A thorough evaluation of underlying co-morbidities revealed a number of environmental factors that could have altered skeletal muscle calcium regulation, and may have pote

Role of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome in the development of protein-calorie malnutrition in ESRD.

Chronic activation of the systemic inflammatory response is a common and unifying factor in many end-stage illnesses, particularly end-stage renal disease. Protein-calorie malnutrition and hypoalbuminemia, which are prominent features of end-stage renal disease, develop as a consequence of this syndrome. Recognition of this relationship can assist in the development of new approaches to the successful management of protein-calorie malnutrition developing in the course of end-stage renal disease.

Reduced ex vivo interleukin-8 production by neutrophils in septic and nonseptic systemic inflammatory response syndrome.

Ex vivo cytokine production by circulating lymphocytes and monocytes is reduced in patients with infectious or noninfectious systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Very few studies have addressed the reactivity of polymorphonuclear cells (PMN). To analyze further the relative contribution of systemic inflammatory response syndrome alone or in combination with infection we studied the interleukin-8 (IL-8) production by PMN isolated from patients who had undergone cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and patients with sepsis. Cells were activated with either lipopolysaccharide (LP

[A clinical study on systemic inflammatory response syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome in patients with abdominal surgical emergency].

In order to analyze the development from systemic inflammatory response syndrome(SIRS) to multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and probe the therapeutic strategies, the authors studied retrospectively the clinical data of SIRS and MODS in 1374 patients with abdominal surgical emergency. The results showed that on admission the morbidity of SIRS was 32.5%, afterwards the morbidity of MODS was 6.4%, and the mortality of the patients with SIRS was 4.8%. After 48 hours' therapy, MODS developed in 33.0% of the SIRS cases. Of all the 1374 patients, 40 developed MODS(2.9%) and 27 died (67.5%).

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), multiple organ failure (MOF): are we winning the battle?

The problems of inflammation and infection leading to organ dysfunction and failure continue to be the major problems after injury and operations and with intensive care for many diseases and problems. When SIRS goes to MODS and MOF, the mortality becomes high, ranging from 30-80% depending on the number of failed organs. In spite of this, there have been recent exciting discoveries and contributions to patient care. A reasonable question then is, are we making progress and if so, can we document it? Are the incidence and mortality of MOF decreasing? The literature comparing care over some yea

Investigation of the Associations of Novel Inflammatory Biomarkers-Systemic Inflammatory Index (SII) and Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI)-With the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease and Acute Coronary Syndrome Occurrence.

Atherosclerosis, the underlying cause of coronary artery disease (CAD), has a significant inflammatory component. White blood cell count is an affordable and accessible way to assess the systemic immune response, as it comprises many subgroups with distinct and complex functions. Considering their multidirectional effect on atherosclerosis, new biomarkers integrating various leukocyte subgroups, the Systemic Inflammatory Index (SII) and the Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI), were recently devised to describe the balance between inflammation and immune reaction. This research aimed to

Gut Microbiota Regulates Systemic Inflammatory Response and Compensatory Anti-Inflammatory Response Syndromes by Targeting PF4+ Macrophages in Acute Pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis (AP) begins with pancreatic local inflammation, leading to the onset of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), followed by compensatory anti-inflammatory response syndrome (CARS), which causes immune paralysis and higher mortality rate. We have demonstrated that AP disrupts the balance of the gut microbiota that aggravates disease progression; however, the role of gut microbiota in the development of SIRS/CARS remains poorly understood. Here, we observed a lower abundance of Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron (B. thetaiotaomicron) that increased the infiltration of PF4+ m

Severe systemic inflammatory response syndrome with shock and ARDS resulting from Still's disease: clinical response with high-dose pulse methylprednisolone therapy.

Adult-onset Still's disease, the adult variant of the systemic form of juvenile arthritis, is an uncommon systemic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology characterized by high spiking fevers, neutrophilic leukocytosis, arthritis, and an evanescent rash. There is often a delay in reaching a firm diagnosis. Differential diagnoses include infection, malignancy, and various immunologic disorders. Increased ferritin levels are of particular value in establishing the diagnosis. Clinical response to high-dose corticosteroids may be dramatic. We report a case of a 29-year-old woman who had recently

[Criteria of systemic inflammatory response syndrome are unacceptable in the diagnosis of sepsis in patients with leukopenia].

Twenty-two patients with hemoblastosis were examined in order to evaluate the possibility of using the criteria of the total system's inflammatory response syndrome (TSIRS) for the diagnosis of sepsis in hemoblastosis patients with leukopenia. The patients were examined before and after chemotherapy. Twelve patients with myelotoxic leukopenia developed TSIRS in response to a concomitant infection. No intensive care and resuscitation were needed in 9 of them; antibiotic therapy rapidly improved the clinical status. Three of these patients had to be transferred to intensive care wards. These pat

[Variants of the treatment of critical states with consideration of the pathogenesis of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome].

A total of 182 critical patients with sepsis (n = 62), prolonged compression syndrome (PCS) (n = 41), toxic allergic dermatitis (TAD) presenting as Lyell's and Stevens-Johnson's syndromes (n = 54), and stages I-II status asthmaticus (SA) (n = 25) were examined. Statistical computer processing of the data by the method of comparing the means and analysis of correlations revealed a cascade of numerous mediators and metabolites which can be regarded as manifestations of the systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). This syndrome develops as a reaction to infection, toxic products of microor

Systemic inflammatory response syndrome and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome caused by acute mountain sickness: a case report and literature review.

Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a common condition following rapid exposure to high altitude, though severe complications such as acute gastrointestinal bleeding, systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) are rare. Herein, we report a case of SIRS and MODS in a young traveler who visited Lhasa, Tibet (elevation 3,650 m). Three days after arrival, the patient developed headache, abdominal pain, significant hematemesis, and persistent hypotension. Gastroscopy revealed diffuse bleeding of the gastric mucosa. Laboratory tests indicated multi-org

Alterations of the host-lung microbiome metasystem in systemic inflammatory response syndrome is associated with secondary pneumonia.

Host-respiratory microbiome interplay is vital to lung homeostasis. Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is an intense alteration in host status that necessitates rapid microbiome adaptation to avoid respiratory complications. Using longitudinal multi-omic data from patients with SIRS, we confirm that the respiratory microbiome, blood metabolome, and immune cells form a dynamic metasystem and define a metacluster with distinct T/B cell trafficking, anaerobic bacteria, high tyrosine metabolism, and low fatty acid biosynthesis. This metacluster status can serve to classify the severity
