Toxic formaldehyde emissions, and the necessity to reduce the consumption of petrochemicals, stimulates the development of environmentally friendly adhesives. The aim of this research was to study, for the first time, the possibility of using condensed tannins (CTs)-rich extracts from grey alder (Alnus incana) and black alder (Alnus glutinosa) bark in the production of particleboards and plywood adhesives. The chemical structure, composition, and molecular weight of the CTs were identified by a 13C-NMR and TOF-MS analysis. Three innovative adhesive systems were studied: CTs-phenol-formaldehyde

During wine drinking, aroma release is mainly impacted by wine matrix compositions and oral physiological parameters. Notably, tannins in wine could interact with saliva protein to form aggregates which might also affect the volatility of volatiles. To explore tannins, saliva, and the interaction between them on the volatility of volatiles, the volatility of 16 aroma compounds in the model wine mixed with the commercial tannin extracts, human saliva, or both respectively, was evaluated in vitro static condition by using HS-SPME-GC/MS. The volatility of aroma compounds with high hydrophobicity

The interest in antimicrobial compounds as feed additives is currently increasing. Among different options, tannins seem to have several beneficial effects when employed in animals diet. The present study aimed at investigating the influence on caecal microbial communities of the supplementation of a chestnut and quebracho tannins mix in meat rabbit's diet, also considering animals live performances. Four groups of rabbits were fed with a different diet: a control diet (C); a control diet with coccidiostat (CC), and two experimental diets with 0.3% (T0.3) and 0.6% (T0.6) chestnut and quebracho

A study was conducted to evaluate the influence of chestnut tannins (CT) on welfare, carcass characteristics, meat quality, and lipid oxidation in rabbits under high ambient temperature. Rabbits in one group were raised at 20°C and fed with basal diet (N) and other three groups (33°C) were fed basal diet with 0 (C), 5 (CT5), and 10 g (CT10) of CT/kg of diet. Compared with the C group, rabbits in CT10 had higher pH(24) and lower cooking loss and thiobarbituric acid reacting substance values at 0, 30, and 60 min of forced oxidation. Rabbits in C group had higher cortisol levels, creatine kinase

BACKGROUND: Methane emissions during livestock production have become an important source of greenhouse gases. Silage feed, as the main feed source for ruminants, plays a significant role in the livestock industry. METHODS: In this experiment, three different tannin-related compounds (tannic acid, gallic acid and polyethylene glycol) were added as silage additives to Moringa oleifera leaf silage. Their effects on the nutritional quality, fermentation quality, aerobic stability and microbial community of Moringa oleifera leaf silage were determined, and in vitro experiments were conducted to de

When organs and tissues, such as the heart and abdominal aorta, are damaged due to trauma and cause massive bleeding, it can easily lead to ischemic shock and be extremely fatal. To address this, we developed a novel photocurable, fully bio-based and doxycycline (Dox) stabilized hydrogel tissue adhesive (SH-10-T-5/Dox) designed for field deployment, integrating silk fibroin grafted onto glutathione (SF-GSH), methacrylated hyaluronic acid (HAMA), tannic acid (TA), and Dox via UV-initiated thiol-ene click chemistry. The ambient-stable formulation maintains ready-to-use portability. TA provided r

Diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D) is a multifactorial disorder involving gut-brain axis dysregulation, altered barrier integrity, microbial imbalance, and stress-related mechanisms, with limited nutritional strategies targeting these pathways. Tannin-rich extracts may exert barrier-protective, microbiota-modulating, and stress-related effects. In a prospective before-after pilot study (NCT05207618), 28 adults with IBS‑D completed a 60‑day tannin-based supplementation (480 mg/day). Outcomes included IBS Severity Scoring System (IBS-SSS), bowel habits, somatization, perceived

Tannin (TA), as a natural phenolic compound with strong antioxidant activity, has been used as a feed additive for various animals. In this study, we fed a diet containing 800 mg/kg of tannin on Litopenaeus vannamei for 56 days and then subjected to acute ammonia stress for 48 hr to investigate the effect of dietary tannin on the ammonia stress response of L. vannamei through transcriptomic and metabolomic analysis. The transcriptome analysis indicated that ammonia stress-induced differential expression of 4,185 genes, while tannin-fed shrimp only had 964 differentially expressed genes. Compar

The site and extent of digestion of sorghum nutrients affected by tannins in the intestine are not clarified. Porcine small intestine digestion and large intestine fermentation were simulated in vitro to determine the effects of sorghum tannin extract on the digestion and fermentation characteristics of nutrients in the mimicked porcine gastrointestinal tract. In experiment 1, low-tannin sorghum grain without or with 30 mg/g sorghum tannin extract were digested by porcine pepsin and pancreatin to measure in vitro digestibility of nutrients. In experiment 2, the lyophilized porcine ileal digest

Boar spermatozoa are very susceptible to cryopreservation injuries and, for this reason, pig remains one of the few species in which fresh semen is still preferred to thawed one for routine artificial insemination (AI). The present work evaluated the effect of supplementing boar sperm thawing medium with Silvafeed SP (SSP), a mixture of Chestnut and Quebracho wood extracts (60/40 w/w) rich in polyphenols (92.4% tannin content) on in vitro fertilization (IVF) and on the following sperm parameters: sperm motility (assessed by CASA), viability, acrosome integrity, mitochondrial function and lipid

Micro-mesoporous carbons (MMCs) were successfully prepared using natural polyphenolic compounds, condensed tannins, and glyoxal, a nontoxic aldehyde, in lieu of synthetic phenolic compounds like formaldehyde and resorcinol as carbon precursors. Such MMCs were fabricated by a soft-templating strategy under mild conditions. Porosity development was achieved by varying the amount of potassium oxalate as an in-situ activator coupled with one-step CO2 activation at 700 °C. This strategy allowed for the enhancement of microporosity as well as retention of the uniform mesoporous structure of the carb

Numerous monomeric and oligomeric flavanol sulfonation products were observed in 10 wines. Levels of 0.85-20.06 and 0-14.72 mg/L were quantified for two monomeric sulfonated flavan-3-ols and, surprisingly, were generally higher than the well-known native flavan-3-ol monomers. Increasing SO2 levels during wine aging increased the sulfonate-modified flavan-3-ol monomers and dimers along with higher concentrations of native monomers. The results indicate that >10% of SO2 is reacting with the C-4 carbocation, formed from acid cleavage of the interflavan bond, perhaps by a bimolecular SN2-type reac

One of the major host-defense functions of alveolar macrophages is the phagocytosis and clearance of inhaled particles deposited in the lower airways and alveolar spaces. Recent studies have indicated that the condensed tannins present in cotton mill dust stimulate the secretion of neutrophil chemotactic factor and arachidonic acid from resident rabbit alveolar macrophages and that these responses may contribute to the acute pulmonary inflammatory reaction associated with byssinosis. To characterize further the effect of tannin on macrophage function, the ability of tannin to modulate alveolar

Cotton bract tannin, a major organic component of cotton dust, was tested for mitogenic activity upon human T lymphocytes. Tannin caused polyclonal activation of human T lymphocytes in vitro. The pattern of T-cell response to tannin was similar to the pattern seen in lymphocytes stimulated with the well-known plant lectin T-cell mitogens, PHA and ConA. The response to tannin was shown to be dependent upon tannin dose and presence of monocytes. The maximum response occurred after 3-4 days in culture with the magnitude comparable to the one achieved by ConA. Lipopolysaccharide from Enterobacter

The digestion and metabolism of Eucalyptus melliodora foliage was studied in captive brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula). The foliage was low in nitrogen and silica but high in lignified fibre and phenolics compared with diets consumed by most other herbivores. The high lignin content was suggested as the main cause of the low digestibility of E. melliodora cell walls (24%); microscopic observations of plant fragments in the caecum and faeces revealed few bacteria attached to lignified tissues. The conversion of digestible energy (0.34 MJ X kg-0.75 X d-1) to metabolizable energy (0.26 MJ

Most polyphenols (and tannins in their composition), secondary plant metabolites with positive effects on the human body, are soluble in water, which makes them environmentally friendly and the most accessible solvent in everyday life. The aim of this study was to examine the effects of water extraction methods, hot water extraction and maceration, on the amounts of these compounds isolated from plants, compared with ultrasonic extraction, which is not readily available. Seven Ericaceae and four Rosaceae species were selected for study, whose leaves are used in folk and/or official medicine to

Eight Merino sheep (49.4 ± 4.23 kg BW) and 8 Alpine goats (53.2 ± 2.51 kg BW) were used to study the effect of ingestion of quebracho tannins on salivation. Four sheep and 4 goats were individually fed a daily allotment of 20 g DM of alfalfa hay/kg BW (Control). Another 4 sheep and 4 goats were also given 20 g DM of alfalfa hay/kg BW supplemented with 50 g of quebracho/kg DM (Tannin) for a period of 64 d. The saliva secretion from the left parotid gland was collected by insertion of a polyvinyl chloride catheter into the parotid duct and the amount of parotid saliva produced recorded over thre

Plants redirect their secondary metabolism when herbivores feed on them, and the galls that the aphid Schlechtendalia chinensis induces on Rhus chinensis carry this response to an extreme, with hydrolyzable tannins (HTs) reaching 74.5% of gall wall dry weight, about 32 times the level in ungalled leaves. To find out how the plant builds this much tannin and how the aphid survives it, we followed HT accumulation and candidate gene expression through gall development, expressed the genes in Arabidopsis thaliana and characterised the aphid enzymes acting on tannin. Expression of phosphoglucomutas
