Immersive Real-Time Biofeedback Optimized With Enhanced Expectancies Improves Motor Learning: A Feasibility Study.

CONTEXT: An Optimizing Performance through Intrinsic Motivation and Attention for Learning theory-based motor learning intervention delivering autonomy support and enhanced expectancies (EE) shows promise for reducing cognitive-motor dual-task costs, or the relative difference in primary task performance when completed with and without a secondary cognitive task, that facilitate adaptive injury-resistant movement response. The current pilot study sought to determine the effectiveness of an autonomy support versus an EE-enhanced virtual reality motor learning intervention to reduce dual-task co

Causal evidence for posterior parietal cortex involvement in visual-to-motor transformations of reach targets.

It has been posited that the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is involved in the visual-to-motor transformation for reach planning. Such a transformation is required because in general the retinal information and the arm motor command do not align, for example in the case of non-zero eye/head orientations. Here, we present behavioral data from a patient with unilateral optic ataxia consecutive to damage to the superior parietal lobule including the intraparietal sulcus in the right hemisphere, who we asked to reach to visual targets under different head roll angles. An accurate visual-to-motor

Chin force in violin playing.

Force generated between the left mandible of violinists and the chinrest of the violin was examined using a force-sensing chinrest developed in this study. A strain-gauge force sensor was built, and it was fixed between the violin's top plate and a chin cup. Fifteen professional/amateur violinists held the violin statically, played musical scales with different sound properties and sounding techniques, as well as an excerpt from a Max Bruch concerto. Peak and mean forces were evaluated for each task. In a separate experiment, lateral movement of the lower teeth due to different levels of volun

Pre-shot EEG alpha-power reactivity during expert air-pistol shooting: a comparison of best and worst shots.

The aim of this study was to examine the proposal that pre-shot occipital electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha-power reactivity would not only associate with, but also have a causal role in, the relative success of performance outcome in expert air-pistol shooting. Six expert air-pistol shooters performed a sixty-shot match, individually, while electroencephalograms were captured from occipital and anterior-temporal electrode sites during the aiming period (3 x 2 s epochs) before shot release. The five best shots and five worst shots were selected for each shooter on the basis of four shot quality

Single-character processing in a case of pure alexia.

The processing of single characters in a pure alexic patient was studied in an attempt to identify the impairment responsible for his reading disorder. Observations from Experiments 1 to 4 suggested a deficit of identification of alphanumeric stimuli without any impairment affecting the elaboration of a structural description of visual stimulation. Experiment 5 indicated that the identification disorder results from a defect in the selective processes--activation and/or inhibition--that must come into play for achieving an appropriate match between a structural description of the stimulation a

Performance changes during repeated military occupational test and its associations to physical performance.

The present study investigated performance changes during three runs (1 min recovery) of repeated military simulation task test (RMST) and its associations with physical performance. Voluntary male soldiers (N = 114) participated in a series of measurements of physical performance. Lower body explosive force production, anaerobic endurance and upper body strength endurance together explained 58% of the variance in the first RSMT (p < 0.001). The same variables explained the variance in the second and third runs of RSMT by 60% and 51%, but explosive force production was replaced with aerobic en

Explicit Agency in Patients with Cervical Dystonia: Altered Recognition of Temporal Discrepancies between Motor Actions and Their Feedback.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in the cognitive processing of movement have been demonstrated in patients with dystonia. The sense of agency, which is the experience of initiating and controlling one's own actions, has never before been studied in these patients. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether the sense of agency is altered in patients with cervical dystonia. METHODS: We used an explicit metacognitive agency task in which participants had to catch targets with a cursor by moving a computer's mouse. The task included several conditions in which the control over the cursor could be disrupted b

The effect of actual and imaginary handgrip on postural stability during different balance conditions.

The stabilizing effect of holding an object on upright posture has been demonstrated in a variety of settings. The mechanism of this effect is unknown but could be attributed to either additional sensorimotor activity triggered by a hand contact or cognitive efforts related to performance of a supra-postural task. A potential mechanism was investigated by comparing postural stability in young healthy individuals while gripping a custom instrumented wooden stick with a 5N force and while imagining holding the same stick in the hand. Twenty subjects were tested during three standing balance cond

[Efficacy of decoding training for children with difficulty reading hiragana].

OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to clarify the efficacy of decoding training focusing on the correspondence between written symbols and their readings for children with difficulty reading hiragana (Japanese syllabary). METHODS: Thirty-five children with difficulty reading hiragana were selected from among 367 first-grade elementary school students using a reading aloud test and were then divided into intervention (n=15) and control (n=20) groups. The intervention comprised 5 minutes of decoding training each day for a period of 3 weeks using an original program on a personal computer. Read

Quantification of reaction time and time perception during Space Shuttle operations.

A microprocessor-based test battery containing simple reaction time, choice reaction time, and time perception tasks was flown aboard a 1985 Space Shuttle flight. Data were obtained from four crewmembers. Individual subject means indicate a correlation between change in reaction time during the flight and the presence of space motion sickness symptoms. The time perception task results indicate that the shortest duration task time (2 s) is progressively overestimated as the mission proceeds and is statistically significant (p less than 0.01) when comparing preflight and postflight baselines. Temporal strategy and performance during a fatiguing short-cycle repetitive task.

UNLABELLED: This study investigated temporal changes in movement strategy and performance during fatiguing short-cycle work. Eighteen participants performed six 7-min work blocks with repetitive reaching movements at 0.5 Hz, each followed by a 5.5-min rest break for a total duration of 1 h. Electromyography (EMG) was collected continuously from the upper trapezius muscle, the temporal movement strategy and timing errors were obtained on a cycle-to-cycle basis, and perceived fatigue was rated before and after each work block. Clear signs of fatigue according to subjective ratings and EMG manife

Artificial grammar learning in primary school children with and without developmental dyslexia.

This paper explores implicit learning in typically developing and primary school children (9-12 years old) with developmental dyslexia using an artificial grammar learning (AGL) task. Two experiments were conducted, which differed in time of presentation and nature of the instructional set (experiment 1--implicit instructions vs experiment 2--explicit instructions). Repeated measures analysis of variance (group x grammaticality x chunk strength) showed a group effect only in experiment 1 (implicit instructions), with only the typically developing children showing evidence of AGL. There was a g

Lower limb stiffness testing in athletic performance: a critical review.

Stiffness describes the resistance of a body to deformation. In regard to athletic performance, a stiffer leg-spring would be expected to augment performance by increasing utilisation of elastic energy. Two-dimensional spring-mass and torsional spring models can be applied to model whole-body (vertical and/or leg stiffness) and joint stiffness. Various tasks have been used to characterise stiffness, including hopping, gait, jumping, sledge ergometry and change of direction tasks. Appropriate levels of reliability have been reported in most tasks, although they vary between investigations. Vert

Is there symmetry in motor imagery? Exploring different versions of the mental chronometry paradigm.

Motor imagery and motor execution share similar processes. However, only some factors that affect motor execution affect motor imagery in the same way. We investigated whether bimanual coordination constraints (parallel movements are performed slower than symmetric movements) are observed in motor imagery and whether the way of implementing the mental chronometry paradigm, which is used to investigate motor imagery, influences the results. Participants imagined and executed repetitive symmetric and parallel bimanual movements in three different tasks. Participants performed a certain number of

Joint action changes valence-based action coding in an implicit attitude task.

Recent studies suggest that co-acting with another person induces a problem to discriminate between one's own and the other's actions which can be resolved by emphasizing action features that discriminate best between both persons' actions in a given task context. Mostly, overt action features like the spatial position of responses have been suggested as discriminating action features. In the present study, we tested whether non-externally perceivable, covert action features can be used for resolving the action discrimination problem during joint action. Therefore, we compared task performance

Automated Assessment of Manual Dexterity Using a Sensorized Nine-Hole Peg Test Board: Reproducibility and Innovative Quantitative Metrics.

The Nine-Hole Peg Test (9-HPT) is widely used in clinical settings but typically relies on the assessor's expertise to record execution time. Here, we propose a novel sensorized 9-HPT capable of automatically measuring total execution time and, importantly, extracting a set of newly defined temporal parameters that enable a more detailed and objective characterization of task performance. We first demonstrated concurrent validity between the sensorized 9-HPT and stopwatch-based measurements recorded by an assessor (ρ always > 0.98; p < 0.001) in healthy participants. Agreement between methods

Work-Related Psychosocial Factors and Their Effects on Mental Workload Perception and Body Postures.

The perception of work is closely linked to body reactions that facilitate task performance. Previous studies have shown that psychosocial work factors significantly impact employee health on both psychological and physical levels, though their cross-sectional designs limit causal interpretations. In this study, participants performed sitting and standing tasks under four different levels of mental workload. The NASA-Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) assessed mental workload perception across six dimensions, while Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) and Rapid Upper Limb Assessment (RULA) scores evalu
