Characteristics of Oral Adverse Effects following COVID-19 Vaccination and Similarities with Oral Symptoms in COVID-19 Patients: Taste and Saliva Secretory Disorders.

Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines exhibit diverse side effects, taste and saliva secretory disorders have remained poorly understood despite their negative impact on the overall quality of life. The present study aimed to characterize oral adverse effects following COVID-19 vaccination and assess their similarities with oral symptoms in COVID-19 patients. A literature search was conducted in databases, including PubMed, LitCovid, and Google Scholar, to retrieve relevant studies. The narrative review indicated that a certain number of vaccinated people develop ageusia, dysge

Persistent Smell and Taste Disorders in the Post-COVID-19 Pandemic Era: A Cross-National Study of Prevalence and Quality of Life in the UK and the USA.

Anosmia/hyposmia affected 14.8%-19.6% of participants in the UK and the USA in the post-pandemic era. Since symptom onset, 37.1%-48.8% of affected participants reported no improvement, while 15.3%-17.6% reported worsening symptoms. Anosmia/hyposmia remains strongly associated with reduced quality of life across both countries. Among respondents reporting anosmia or hyposmia, a high proportion (88.8%-93.5%) also experienced concurrent parosmia.

Long-COVID impacts taste and olfactory in individuals with substance use disorder: A retrospective cohort study from the TriNetX US Collaborative Networks.

Substance use disorder (SUD) exacerbates the impact of Long-COVID, particularly increasing the risk of taste and olfactory disorders. Analyzing retrospective cohort data from TriNetX and over 33 million records (Jan 2020-Dec 2022), this study focused on 1,512,358 participants, revealing that SUD significantly heightens the likelihood of experiencing taste disturbances and anosmia in Long-COVID sufferers. Results indicated that individuals with SUD face a higher incidence of sensory impairments compared to controls, with older adults and women being particularly vulnerable. Smokers with SUD wer

Negative correlation between ACE2 gene expression levels and loss of taste in a cohort of COVID-19 hospitalized patients: New clues to long-term cognitive disorders.

In early 2020, one of the most prevalent symptoms of SARS-CoV-2 infection was the loss of smell (anosmia), found in 60-70% of all cases. Anosmia used to occur early, concomitantly with other symptoms, and often persisted after recovery for an extended period, sometimes for months. In addition to smell disturbance, COVID-19 has also been associated with loss of taste (ageusia). The latest research suggests that SARS-CoV-2 could spread from the respiratory system to the brain through receptors in sustentacular cells localized to the olfactory epithelium. The virus invades human cells via the obl

Two cases of long-term zinc acetate hydrate administration in patients with a zinc deficiency taste disorder with copper deficiency after upper gastrointestinal resection.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Long-term oral administration of zinc preparations to zinc-deficient patients has been shown to result in copper deficiency. Two patients who had zinc deficiency taste disorder and copper deficiency after upper gastrointestinal resection were treated with zinc acetate hydrate. METHODS: Two patients with abnormal taste were diagnosed as zinc deficiency taste disorder by an examination, and were treated with zinc replacement therapy. Case 1 (BMI 15.6 kg/mm2) was given 50 mg/day of zinc acetate hydrate for a year. On the other hand, case 2 (BMI 24.2 kg/mm2) started treatment w

Drinking Ice-Cold Water Reduces the Severity of Anticancer Drug-Induced Taste Dysfunction in Mice.

Taste disorders are common adverse effects of cancer chemotherapy that can reduce quality of life and impair nutritional status. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying chemotherapy-induced taste disorders remain largely unknown. Furthermore, there are no effective preventive measures for chemotherapy-induced taste disorders. We investigated the effects of a combination of three anticancer drugs (TPF: docetaxel, cisplatin and 5-fluorouracil) on the structure and function of mouse taste tissues and examined whether the drinking of ice-cold water after TPF administration would attenuate the

[Development and application of gustatory evoked potentiometer].

Human taste is an important function of chemical perception. In recent years, brain taste evoked potentials have received more and more attention as a feasible tool for objective assessment of taste dysfunction. This paper reviews the main characteristics of gustatory evoked potential signals, the most widely used recording and processing techniques, and the scientific advances and relevance of gustatory evoked potentials in many important applications. In particular, taste evoked potentials are used to study the central effects of food intake and taste disorders, which may affect cognition an

Long-Term Persistence of Olfactory and Gustatory Disorders in COVID-19 Patients.

Smell and taste disorders are frequent symptoms during acute COVID-19 and may persist long after the resolution of the initial phase. This study aims to estimate the proportion and risk factors for smell and/or taste disorders at the onset of symptoms and their persistence after more than 6 months of follow-up in COVID-19 patients. We analyzed a prospective cohort of COVID-19 patients admitted to our institute in Marseille, France in early 2020. After being discharged from the hospital, patients with smell and/or taste disorders were contacted for a telephone interview. Logistic regression ana

[Smell disorders at COVID-19 - the current level of knowledge].

Early reports of SARS-CoV-2 infections only rarely mentioned smell and taste disorders. Several studies, particularly from Europe and the USA, have now confirmed these symptoms as an early key feature of COVID-19. About 70 % of patients seem to experience a reduction of smell and taste in the course of the disease, with most of the studies published to date based on questionnaires and anamnestic data. Validated smell tests have so far only been used in a few studies. A distinction between taste and taste disorders, i. e. a distinction between retronasal aroma taste and the olfactory system fro

Clinical use of electrogustometry: strengths and limitations.

Electrogustometry (EGM) has a number of strengths and a few limitations in clinical use. The strengths of EGM are: (i) the range of measurements can be kept constant; (ii) quantitative control of the intensity of the stimulation is possible; (iii) only a short period of time is required for testing; (iv) it is possible to detect even slight taste disorders for which the patient has no subjective symptoms; (v) it is useful for topognosis of lesions of taste pathways and for determining prognosis; and (vi) it is the only quantitative method for diagnosing disorders of the glosssopharyngeal nerve

Disorders of the sense of taste were studied in 355 patients with craniocerebral pathology, among whom 70 had tumors of the acoustic nerve, 64 had a craniocerebral trauma, 60 had tumors of the cerebral hemispheres. The most coarse disorders with the loss of the sense of taste on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue were encountered in tumors of the acoustic nerve and in transverse infracture of the pyramid of the temporal bone. Longitudinal infractures of the pyramid usually cause a diminished sense of taste on the anterior 2/3 of the tongue in the acute period, with improvment of the taste in the l
