Challenges of teaching the deaf-blind learner in an education setting in Johannesburg: Experiences of educators and assistant educators.

BACKGROUND: Evidence suggests that educators of deaf-blind students in the South African context have specific challenges in the educational setting because of their lack of adequate knowledge on deaf-blindness and a lack of sufficient training on communication, teaching and learning strategies. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to describe the challenges experienced by educators and assistant educators of children with deaf-blindness. METHOD: Ten educators and assistant educators were selected purposively to participate in the study (Male = 3; Female = 7; age range 31-49 years). Partici

Using conceptual change theory to help preservice teachers understand dyslexia.

Recently, many states passed laws requiring pre- and in-service teachers to receive professional development in dyslexia awareness. Even though misconceptions regarding dyslexia are widespread, there is a paucity of research on how to effectively remove misconceptions and replace them with accurate knowledge. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a researcher-created refutation text grounded in conceptual change theory could produce significant conceptual change in preservice teacher knowledge of dyslexia when compared with a control text about dyslexia (Dyslexia Basics, Internati

Professional development and signed literacy instruction: evidence from a multiple-baseline design.

This study examined whether professional development can translate a signed literacy instruction framework into high-fidelity classroom practice. Four K-3 teachers in an ASL/English bilingual program received a 2-day training followed by bi-weekly virtual coaching; entry into training was staggered in a non-concurrent multiple-baseline single case design. Teachers' use of indicators of signed literacy instruction was scored for at least 7 baseline and 2 intervention instructional units per teacher. Visual analysis showed near-zero fidelity during baseline and an immediate jump to 45%-60% on th

Knowledge about dyslexia among early literacy teachers in China.

This study examined knowledge about dyslexia among Chinese-speaking early literacy teachers in Mainland China. A total of 516 teachers, including 203 kindergarten teachers from developed regions (KDRs), 166 primary school teachers from developed regions (PDRs), and 147 primary school teachers from less developed regions (PLDRs), completed a survey measuring knowledge about dyslexia in three domains: general information, symptoms/diagnosis, and treatment. PLDRs scored significantly lower on the total scale and each of the subscales than KDRs and PDRs, with the latter two not significantly diffe

Training non-mental health professionals to assess and manage suicide risk: Community level intervention for suicide prevention in Guatemala.

BACKGROUND: Domestic violence, childhood physical and sexual abuse, and gang violence are prevalent and growing problems for Guatemalan youth, particularly in low socioeconomic (SES) areas. Resources in the community for psychosocial support are greatly lacking. Schools often serve as the main source of support for these highly vulnerable adolescents. Yet, many teachers lack the training to manage the psychological distress of their at-risk students and to properly engage, assess, and manage the psychological needs of their students. We developed a brief risk assessment and management training

Features of effective staff training programmes within school-based interventions targeting student activity behaviour: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Evaluations of school-based activity behaviour interventions suggest limited effectiveness on students' device-measured outcomes. Teacher-led implementation is common but the training provided is poorly understood and may affect implementation and student outcomes. We systematically reviewed staff training delivered within interventions and explored if specific features are associated with intervention fidelity and student activity behaviour outcomes. METHODS: We searched seven databases (January 2015-May 2020) for randomised controlled trials of teacher-led school-based activity

Upscaling a behavioural intervention program for tobacco use cessation - A randomised controlled study.

A randomised control trial was conducted among school teachers in Bihar, India for upscaling a tested, evidence-based tobacco intervention using train-the-trainer model. Six blocks in three districts were selected and randomised into intervention and control blocks. Cluster coordinators in intervention blocks were given training in the details of intervention. Cluster coordinators routinely train headmasters and they were asked to include intervention training in their routine. Except for the training material, no additional resources were provided to cluster coordinators and headmasters. Head

Teachers' Perceptions and Preparedness for Teaching English as a Foreign Language to Students with Developmental Dyslexia: A Systematic Review.

Students with developmental dyslexia (DD) face significant challenges when learning English as a foreign language (EFL), highlighting the need for targeted support in educational systems. EFL teachers' perceptions and preparedness regarding DD are crucial for effective instruction and improved learning outcomes in inclusive classrooms. However, no systematic review has yet explored EFL teachers' perceptions and preparedness to teach students with DD. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines, examines existing research between 2005 and 2025 on EFL teachers' per

Thrown in at the deep end? Perceptions of burdens, gains, and contributions to the integration of refugee students among teachers with(out) target group-specific professional knowledge.

In Germany, young migrants and refugees whose German language skills are not sufficient for attending regular classes at school are assigned to so-called "preparation classes". As the name implies, the main objective of these classes is to teach German language skills and thereby prepare students for regular classes or vocational education and training. Teachers in these classes face special challenges: They have to teach a group of students that is highly heterogeneous in several key respects, they have to deal with a dearth of institutional support and guidance, and they have a lot of respon

Prototype-oriented contrastive mean-teacher for unsupervised domain adaptive object detection.

Unsupervised domain adaptive object detection (UDA-OD) aims to deploy a detector trained on source domain(s) to a new, unlabeled target domain. Carrying out mean-teacher self-training for UDA-OD poses a significant challenge, given that its success depends heavily on the quality of pseudo boxes. While many earlier researches have mainly centered on cross-domain transferability, they often neglect the rich intra- and inter-domain semantic structures. As a result, this neglect empirically restricts the discriminative abilities of the learning model. In our study, we have found a notable alignmen

The class specific effects of compliance training with "do" and "don't" requests: analogue analysis and classroom application.

Two experiments are reported in which the relationship between compliance with "do" and "don't" requests was examined with developmentally disabled children. In Experiment 1, a multiple baseline design across subjects with counterbalanced treatment conditions was used to evaluate a compliance training program composed of four phases: (a) baseline, during which no consequences were delivered for compliance, (b) reinforcement for compliance with one targeted "do" request, (c) reinforcement for compliance with one targeted "don't" request, and (d) follow-up with reinforcement on a variable ratio

Selective Confidence-Guided Projection-Based Encoding for Medical Image Classification.

Deep neural networks have achieved strong performance in medical image classification, but their deployment may be constrained by the computational cost of high-capacity models. Knowledge distillation (KD) addresses this problem by transferring knowledge from a teacher to a lightweight student. However, the reliability of teacher supervision may vary across samples, potentially introducing noisy guidance and local conflicts with ground-truth supervision. We propose Selective Confidence-guided Projection-based Encoding (SCOPE), a conflict-aware KD framework comprising Selective Relation Alignme

A Multi-Teacher Knowledge Distillation Framework for Enhancing the Robustness of Automated Sperm Morphology Assessment.

Background/Objectives: The manual analysis of sperm morphology, crucial for male infertility diagnosis, is subjective and time-consuming. Automated methods using deep learning, offer a promising alternative; however, standard deep models are prone to overfitting when applied to small, heavily unbalanced clinical datasets, limiting their generalization capability. This study proposes a knowledge distillation approach that functions as a strong regularizer, improving the robustness of automated sperm morphology analysis. Methods: We utilize soft distillation to transfer knowledge from a set of h
