This study investigated the effects of 12-week interventions on cognitive and physical fitness adaptations in older men with cognitive decline. We employed a randomized, parallel, and controlled design with five groups: team sports (TS), team sports with cognitive training (TS+C), aerobic exercise (A), aerobic exercise with cognitive training (A+C), and a control group (Control). Fifty older male volunteers (mean age: 69.3 ± 3.2 years) were included in the analysis. Interventions consisted of two 60-minute sessions per week for 12 weeks. Both TS and A groups participated in structured physical

Pre-planned deceleration assessments are vital for profiling team sport athletes as they provide a measure of the athletes' ability to implement effective performance and protection strategies to tolerate the substantial mechanical forces. Although task requirements of these linear assessments are generally consistent, current research employs low sampling technology, which limits the ability to define the deceleration start point and subsequently the reliability. Therefore, this study compared the intra- and inter-day reliability of three deceleration assessment analysis methods: set distance

BACKGROUND: There has been a rise in the participation, professionalism, and profile of female sports in recent years. Sprinting ability is an important quality for successful athletic performance in many female team sports. However, much of the research to date on improving sprint performance in team sports is derived from studies with male participants. Given the biological differences between the sexes, this may be problematic for practitioners when programming to enhance sprint performance in female team-sport athletes. Therefore, the aims of this systematic review were to investigate (1)

The Cooper 12-Minute Run Test (CT12) is widely used to estimate cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), yet its validity in collegiate team-sport athletes remains uncertain. This study aimed to compare the CT12-estimated VO2 max with laboratory-measured VO2 max and evaluate CT12's accuracy in classifying CRF levels. Seventy-three varsity athletes (38% women; age 21.6 ± 2.8 y; BMI 23.5 ± 3.3 kg/m2) completed CT12 on a 400-m track and a ramp-incremental treadmill test with breath-bybreath gas analysis, 2-7 days apart in randomized order. VO2 max was classified by age/sex criteria. Agreement statistics

Background: SARS-CoV-2 infection may impair functional capacity in athletes, while prior vaccination status may be associated with post-infection functional status. However, evidence comparing objective post-infection exercise responses according to vaccination status in elite athletes remains limited. Methods: This study included a total of 220 male athletes with PCR-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections: 101 unvaccinated and 119 vaccinated with two doses prior to infection. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) was performed 14 ± 1 days after confirmation of SARS-CoV-2 infection and before the a

INTRODUCTION: The majority of epidemiologic research on adolescent non-medical anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) use was conducted in the 1990s and early 2000s, indicating a need to update evidence for the modern era. We aim to understand the prevalence of AAS use among US adolescents and assess associations between AAS use, sports participation, other drug use, and injection drug use (IDU).
METHODS: Using data from the 2017 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, we estimated the prevalence of AAS use and tested for associations between AAS use, sports participation, and drug use, overall and b

Sports-team participation is often regarded as a favorable adolescent context, but whether its associations are consistent across distinct risk behaviors and across sex remains unresolved. We conducted a repeated cross-sectional analysis of seven U. S. National Youth Risk Behavior Survey cycles (2011-2023; 110,409 records) using survey-weighted regression and marginal standardization. Participation in one or more sports teams was associated with higher adjusted prevalence of alcohol use (PD, +4.46 percentage points; 95% CI, +3.38 to +5.55) and physical fighting (+2.53; 95% CI, +1.62 to +3.43),

Mental fatigue (MF) has been hypothesized to contribute to injury risk in athletes, but observational studies have not directly investigated this relationship. Therefore, the current study evaluates potential relationships between mental fatigue and subsequent injury occurrence in basketball. Using an observational design, we monitored fourteen male semi-professional basketball players (age: 22 ± 4 years; stature: 192.6 ± 8.8 cm; body mass: 85.5 ± 9.1 kg; Tier 3) from a single team for 21 weeks throughout the competitive season. Each week, the players participated in 5 team-based training sess
