Thermal infrared imaging based facial temperature in comparison to ear temperature during a real-driving scenario.

Motion Sickness is associated with a variety of symptoms, which differ in occurrence rate and intensity between individuals. In order to research the cause of car sickness and develop countermeasures, it is important to determine symptoms and their severity objectively. A tool for this purpose could be the assessment of physiological reactions due to motion sickness. This paper describes and discusses a methodology to identify changes in facial skin temperatures in a real-driving study. Common techniques had to be adjusted in order to meet the requirements given by the challenges of in-car-rec

Influence of temperature on thromboelastometry and platelet aggregation in cardiac arrest patients undergoing targeted temperature management.

BACKGROUND: Coagulation can be visualised using whole blood coagulation analyses such as thromboelastometry and platelet aggregation tests; however, the role of temperature in the analyses is ambiguous. The aim was to examine whether temperature influences the whole blood coagulation tests. METHODS: We included 40 patients treated with targeted temperature management (33 ± 1 °C) after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. The blood samples were obtained on hypothermia and normothermia. Each blood sample was analysed simultaneously at 33 °C and 37 °C by thromboelastography (ROTEM®) employing the ass

Core body temperature, skin temperature, and interface pressure. Relationship to skin integrity in nursing home residents.

OBJECTIVE: To ascertain the effects of 1-, 1 1/2-, and 2-hour turning intervals on nursing home residents' skin over the sacrum and trochanters. HYPOTHESES: (1) the higher the core body temperature, the higher the skin surface temperature; (2) the 2-hour turning interval would have significantly higher skin surface temperature; (3) there would be no relationship between skin surface temperature and interface pressure; and (4) the sacrum would have the lowest skin surface temperature. DESIGN: Modified Latin-square. SETTING: For-profit nursing home. PARTICIPANTS: Convenience sample of 26 res

Temperature shocks and childbearing in Australia.

We investigate the impact of temperature shocks on household childbearing decisions in Australia using 21 rounds of longitudinal data from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. We explore the relationship between deviations in average temperature and fertility outcomes by integrating high-resolution satellite temperature data at postcode level with detailed household fertility information from HILDA. Our findings reveal that temperature shocks, particularly cold shocks, significantly reduce fertility: a one standard deviation from the thermally optimal temperat

The body temperature of Tyrannosaurus rex.

Despite an extensive history of study, quantitative constraints on the thermophysiology of Tyrannosaurus rex remain limited. Here, we derive a thermodynamically based determination of T. rex body temperatures from clumped isotopes in tooth enamel. Measurements of three T. rex teeth from the Late Cretaceous Hell Creek Formation yield a temperature of 36.3 ± 2.5°C (1 SE), comparable to modern endotherms. Teeth of coeval Hell Creek Formation crocodilians yielded temperatures significantly lower than did those of T. rex. Comparison with proxy-derived paleotemperatures and model simulations indicat

Effect of temperature on mosquito olfaction.

Mosquitoes use a wide range of cues to find a host to feed on, eventually leading to the transmission of pathogens. Among them, olfactory cues ( e.g. , host emitted odors, including CO 2 , and skin volatiles) play a central role in mediating host seeking behaviors. While mosquito olfaction can be impacted by many factors, such as the physiological state of the insect ( e.g. , age, reproductive state), the impact of environmental temperature on the olfactory system remains unknown. In this study, we quantified the behavioral responses of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, vectors of dengue, yellow fever

Investigation of Cuprizone Inactivation by Temperature.

Animal models, such as cuprizone (bis-cyclohexanone oxaldihydrazone) feeding, are helpful to study experimental demyelination and remyelination in the context of diseases like multiple sclerosis. Cuprizone is a copper chelator, which when supplemented to the normal food of C57BL/6J mice in a concentration of 0.2% leads to oligodendroglial loss, subsequent microglia and astrocyte activation, resulting in demyelination. Termination of the cuprizone diet results in remyelination, promoted by newly formed mature oligodendrocytes. The exact mode of cuprizone's action is not well understood, and inf

The importance of temperature on the neurovascular unit.

Therapeutic hypothermia is the only treatment that has been shown to be of benefit to infant's ≥ 36 weeks of gestation with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. The evidence for the benefit is based on multiple, well-designed randomized clinical trials. Based on this data, the use of therapeutic hypothermia has been widely disseminated throughout the neonatal community. An important concept in hypoxic-ischemic brain injury is the functioning of the neurovascular unit which links neurons, non-neuronal cellular elements and the capillary endothelial cells to promote optimal barrier maintenance betwe

Correlation of scrotal temperature in twins.

BACKGROUND: Scrotal temperature and semen quality have been found to be inversely correlated in several studies, and variation in scrotal temperature may contribute to the well known variation in semen quality. The reason for the variation in scrotal temperature is not well understood although determinants could be of a genetic nature. METHODS: We monitored scrotal skin temperature for 24 h in a group of monozygotic and dizygotic twins and single-born brothers (n = 48 males). A thermistor was attached to the underwear and the temperature of the scrotal skin was recorded every 5 min using a sm

[Travelers exposed to extreme temperatures].

Sudden introduction of the unadapted human into extreme environments can result in serious, sometimes fatal, reactions. Most complications are due either to failure of thermoregulatory system or consecutive to the physiological responses to those environmental conditions. In addition to a number of minor diseases, cold can cause two major accidents, i.e., hypothermia and frostbite which can be enhanced at altitude. Moreover, the main disease in altitude conditions is represented by the acute mountain sickness which can lead to acute pulmonary and cerebral edema. Heat can cause heatstroke, dehy

Effects of temperature on granulocyte preservation.

With the increasing use of granulocyte transfusion it is becoming important to determine if granulocytes can be preserved for a few days. If so, the optimum storage conditions must be identified. We studied the function in vitro of granulocytes collected as they would be for transfusion by continuous-flow centrifuge leukapheresis (CFCL) and filtration leukapheresis (FL). Granulocytes collected by CFCL maintained normal ability to phagocytose and kill bacteria after 48 hr and normal chemotaxis after 24 hr of storage at 20 degrees--24 degrees C. Neither 1 degrees--6 degrees C nor 37 degrees C we

Aural temperature of the newborn infant.

The aural, oesophageal, and rectal temperatures of 10 term infants were monitored during changes in environmental temperature. The aural temperature in normal infants was found to be consistently higher than at any other site. It is suggested that this finding is due to the local heating effect of brain metabolism and shows the important contribution to total body heat production made by the brain. The depressed aural temperature found in an infant with hydranencephaly is cited as supporting evidence and may indicate the potential of aural temperature measurement in the investigation of cerebr

An integrated polyacrylonitrile fiber mat sensor for simultaneous temperature and pressure monitoring in high-temperature environments.

Flexible sensors capable of simultaneous temperature and pressure monitoring are highly desirable for electronic skin, wearable devices, and safety monitoring in high-temperature environments. However, existing flexible sensors are often limited by narrow operating temperature ranges, thermally induced signal interference, and insufficient durability under cyclic mechanical loading. This study develops a flexible wide-temperature-range temperature-pressure sensor based on polyacrylonitrile fiber mats. By combining laser processing or heat treatment, the electrical properties of polyacrylonitri

Temperature Response of Soil Organic Matter Decomposition Rates: Construction and Applications of a Temperature Gradient Block.

Soil is the Earth's largest carbon (C) reservoir, holding nearly twice as much C as the atmosphere. Climate change-induced temperature increases could enhance soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition, potentially releasing carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, thus resulting in a positive feedback to climate change. This presents the question: how can we define the response of SOM decomposition rates to short-term changes in temperature? Can we utilize this data to fit mechanistically defined equations in Earth system models for climate predictions? Most research to date has focused on labo

Study and Optimization of a High-Performance SPR-PCF Temperature Sensor for Low-Temperature Monitoring Applications.

To meet the demand for highly sensitive temperature sensing in low-temperature environments, a surface plasmon resonance photonic crystal fiber (SPR-PCF) sensor with a central air hole and a dual-layer air-hole arrangement is designed and optimized. In this work, these air-hole features are used for mode-field regulation in a low-temperature sensing structure based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR), together with a polished gold film and an ethanol/chloroform (1:1) temperature-sensitive medium. The finite element method (FEM) was employed to analyze the resonance behavior and thermal response

Temperature variability, extreme temperature events, and arthritis risk in older adults: interaction with PM2.5 chemical components.

Ambient temperature and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) are important environmental determinants of chronic disease, yet their joint effects remain insufficiently understood. This study investigated the joint effects of long-term temperature-related exposures (annual mean temperature, diurnal temperature range [DTR], heatwaves, and cold spells) and PM2.5 chemical components on arthritis risk among 11,057 older adults in China. Cox proportional hazards models with time-varying exposures were applied to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We assessed multiplicative i
