Congenital True Aneurysm of the Right Superficial Temporal Artery.

INTRODUCTION: Superficial temporal artery aneurysms (STAAs) occur in 1% of arterial aneurysms; mostly (95%) are pseudoaneurysms following trauma; true aneurysms are rare (5%); forty-five cases are reported. AIM: To report a rare case of a congenital STAAA. CASE REPORT: A67-year-old patient recalled the existence of a true-histologically evidenced- aneurysm of the right superficial temporal artery since his childhood denying any head injury; it was resected through a horizontal skin incisure. Brain arteries' magnetic imaging was negative. CONCLUSION: Spontaneous or congenital STAAs have to b

Facial nerve injury during temporal artery biopsy.

Temporal artery biopsy is considered the gold standard investigation of giant cell arteritis and is recommended in suspected cases despite a sensitivity of 81-91%. This review highlights the potential risk of facial nerve injury during temporal artery biopsy and introduces recent advances in the emerging role of imaging modalities. When these non-invasive techniques are used in conjunction with American College of Rheumatology scoring, which includes clinical features and biochemical test results, temporal artery biopsy may be avoided in selected cases.

Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery: a case report.

Pseudoaneurysms of superficial temporal artery are very rare and commonly occur as a result of blunt trauma. There are several methods for the diagnosis, but the diagnosis can be accurately made only from a history and physical examination. A 27-year-old man presented with a painless pulsatile mass over his right temporal region after a blunt head trauma. The diagnosis was suspected to be superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm. The patient underwent surgical exploration and the mass was resected. Histopathological findings confirmed the diagnosis of pseudoaneurysm. Superficial temporal art

A revised classification of the temporal branches of the posterior cerebral artery.

PURPOSE: Understanding the vascular variability of the inferior temporal occipital regions is essential for microsurgical approaches to this cerebral zone. To this end, we carried out a microanatomical study of the inferior temporal cortical branches of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) in order to define their vascularisation territories. METHODS: We studied 40 cerebral hemispheres (20 brains) under an operating microscope. Three brains were fixed in Winkler's solution with latex arterial perfusion and the other 17 brains were fixed in formaldehyde solution. RESULTS: Our revised classific

Dissecting aneurysm of the anterior temporal artery: case report.

A 65-year-old woman presented a rare dissecting aneurysm of the anterior temporal artery (ATA) manifesting as headache. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mixed-density mass in the horizontal segment of the middle cerebral artery. Emergent angiography demonstrated aneurysmal dilatation and a thrombosed mass in the sylvian fissure. Infectious aneurysm was excluded. She underwent emergent surgery to reduce the risk of repeated infarction and hemorrhage. The distal side of the ATA manifested occlusive changes suggestive of arterial dissection. The proximal side of the A

[Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery: a case report].

We report a case of traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery (STA) in an 87-year-old man. Surgical treatment was undertaken after failure of ultrasound-guided compression. In this report, we review briefly the pathogenic mechanism, presentation, diagnosis and treatment of this type of aneurysm. Traumatic pseudoaneurysms of the STA are rare injuries, generally occurring after a recent (weeks to months) episode of blunt head injury, and primarily in a young to middle-aged (60 %) male (80 %) population. Clinical diagnosis is straightforward when the patient presents with a puls

Proposal to decrease the number of negative temporal artery biopsies.

OBJECTIVE: The percentage of negative temporal artery biopsies (TABs) remains very high in patients with suspected giant cell arteritis (GCA). The aim of our study was to identify the clinical predictors of TAB results to improve the effectiveness of this diagnostic procedure. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional study of 125 consecutive patients who underwent TAB in the Department of Internal Medicine of a public tertiary hospital, from January 1997 to March 2002. We compared patients with a positive and a negative biopsy result. RESULTS: Forty-six of the 125 biopsies (36.8%) were positi

Traumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery: case report.

A 26 year-old woman suffered a blunt head injury on the left temporal area and developed an arteriovenous fistula with a pseudoaneurysm on the superficial temporal artery. These fistulas are rare and usually associated with pseudoaneurysms, most commonly in the frontal arterial branch. The aneurysms generally appear late after trauma and present as a pulsatile painfully growing mass in the temporal region, associated with fremitus and bruit. The diagnosis is made by angiography and surgery is a very effective treatment.

Traumatic aneurysm of the superficial temporal artery: case report.

Traumatic aneurysms of the temporal artery are uncommon, with less than 200 cases reported in the literature. A case resulting from a head injury from playing a popular new survival game known as "paintball" is presented here. A general review of the literature on traumatic temporal artery aneurysms is provided, as well as information on this new form of recreation and safety recommendations for "paintball" players.

[Is the biopsy of the temporal artery necessary? A study of 204 biopsies].

Due to the controversy on the need of performing temporal artery biopsies for the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), we have reviewed 204 biopsies of temporal arteries as well as the clinical histories of the 190 patients. Patients without local manifestations were excluded from this study. From the 173 remaining patients, 54 presented a diagnostic biopsy of GCA. The 119 patients with a negative biopsy were divided into different groups according to the final diagnosis. From our data we could not find a clinical pattern which could permit the prediction of biopsy positiveness. We could n

Aneurysms and pseudoaneurysms of the superficial temporal artery caused by trauma.

Superficial temporal artery (STA) aneurysms as a result of trauma represent less than 1% of reported aneurysms. During the past 200 years only the type of trauma and the preferred treatment have significantly changed. Patients are generally young men with a recent history of blunt head trauma. They may complain of a mass, headache, or other vague symptoms. Neurologic defects are rare; however, if a neurologic deficit exists, the physician should consider either arteriography or a head CT scan to search for intracranial pathologic conditions. In most cases the diagnosis may be made by obtaining

[Immunohistological and histological findings in the temporal artery in polymyalgia rheumatica].

Immunofluorescent and light-microscopic investigations of the temporal artery were carried out in 36 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica. An arteritis was seen in 21 patients. Depositions of fibrin, immunoglobulins, and complement were found in the wall of the temporal artery and/or the vasa vasorum in 24 patients. 14 control patients showed neither an arteritis nor depositions of complement. Positive results were obtained in 91.6% of the patients with polymyalgia rheumatica when simultaneous light-microscopic and immunofluorescent examinations of the temporal artery were carried out.

Temporal artery biopsy in giant-cell arteritis. A reappraisal.

We have reviewed the clinical records and histology of 135 patients who underwent temporal artery biopsy between 1973 and 1978. Biopsies were classified histologically as giant-cell arteritis (17%), atypical arteritis (6%), healed arteritis (2%), arteriosclerosis (67%), atherosclerosis (5%), or normal (3%). Most of the histological diagnoses made at the time of biopsy were confirmed but eight cases which had originally been reported as atypical or healed arteritis were classified as arteriosclerosis when reviewed. All 33 patients with histological evidence of arteritis were accepted as clinica

Large artery involvement in giant cell (temporal) arteritis.

Of 248 patients with giant cell arteritis, 34 had evidence that the disease affected the aorta or its major branches. Symptoms suggestive of large artery involvement were intermittent claudication of an extremity, paresthesias, and Raynaud's phenomenon. Physical findings included absent or decreased large artery pulses and bruits over large arteries. Four patients presented with decreased upper extremity pulses as the initial manifestation of their arteritis. Nine other patients under treatment for temporal arteritis or polymyalgia rheumatica first developed evidence of large artery involvemen

Audit of temporal artery biopsy reporting in South Australia.

BACKGROUND: Despite histopathology playing a central role in the diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), until recently, there was no guideline for reporting on temporal artery biopsies (TAB). The Society for Cardiovascular Pathology established such consensus guidelines in 2023. The aim of this audit was to assess the extent to which South Australian TAB reports aligned with the reporting guidelines, and whether reporting practices changed across time. METHODS: All SA Pathology TAB reports from 2010, 2017 and 2024 were assessed against the reporting guidelines, which contain four main areas

Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia With Temporal Artery Eosinophilia: A Case Report.

Angiolymphoid Hyperplasia with Eosinophilia (ALHE) is a benign vascular proliferative disorder with uncertain etiology and pathogenesis. The aim of this paper is to report a case of ALHE in the temporal artery and discuss the general aspects of this pathology. A 29-year-old female black patient sought the Vascular Surgery Outpatient Service, complaining of bulging in the right temporal region, associated with pain and local discomfort. Physical examination revealed pulsatile bulging in the right temporal region measuring approximately 2.5 × 1.5 cm. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance showed an expansiv

Angioleiomyoma of the Parotid Gland Fed by the Superficial Temporal Artery.

Angioleiomyoma in the head and neck area is rarely observed. This report introduces 2 cases of angioleiomyoma discovered in the parotid gland, particularly with the superficial temporal artery (STA) as the feeding vessel. Each patient was evaluated preoperatively by clinical manifestation and computed tomography scan, but the difficulty was encountered due to nonspecific radiologic features of angioleiomyoa. Surgical intervention was performed for precise diagnosis and treatment. The tumors were fed from the STA, with the diagnosis of venous type parotid angioleiomyoma. To our knowledge, there
