Temporal bone histopathology in trisomy 22.

Trisomy 22 has multiple physical anomalies, and aural malformations are commonly associated with trisomy 22. However, there has been only one report describing the temporal bone histopathology in trisomy 22. Our case is the second reported temporal bone histopathology of trisomy 22. Aural anomalies in this case were less serious than those earlier described, though showing Mondini dysplasia of the bony and membranous labyrinth. Deafness in patients with trisomy 22 may manifest sensorineural, conductive or mixed hearing losses, and/or vestibular dysfunction of varying degrees, according to the

Current perspective on temporal bone trauma.

The improved survival of patients sustaining massive head injuries has increased the number of temporal bone fractures being managed by otolaryngologists and neurosurgeons. We performed a prospective analysis of 35 patients with head injury with temporal bone trauma. The major emphasis of this study was to investigate the incidence, management, and outcome of facial nerve injury in such patients and to evaluate the importance of electrodiagnostics in the surgical management of the facial nerve. The results of this study indicate an incidence of fracture type, hearing loss, and facial nerve par

Temporal bone findings in Alzheimer's disease.

Sensorineural hearing loss has been reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and a topographically specific pattern of degeneration in the central auditory system has been described. Although peripheral visual and olfactory systems have been extensively studied, there is no report of peripheral auditory system abnormalities in AD patients. Comparison of temporal bones from eight AD patients with those from eight non-AD controls revealed a significant difference in the percentage of remaining hair cells, peripheral processes, and spiral ganglion cells in the basal cochlear turn but no significant d

Usher syndrome. A temporal bone report.

The bilateral temporal bones of a deceased 84-year-old man who had been suffering from Usher syndrome were examined using light microscopy. Histopathologic examination disclosed degeneration of the organ of Corti that was most profound in the basal turn, degeneration of cochlear neurons in all of the turns, and severe loss of spiral ganglia in both cochleas. Endolymphatic hydrops of unknown cause and a functionally unimportant pit malformation in the macular utricle were observed in the right cochlea. We compared the aforementioned findings with temporal bone reports cited in the literature.

Temporal bone histopathology of cisplatin ototoxicity.

Cisplatin (cis-diamminedichloroplatinum II) is a potent chemotherapeutic agent that is useful in the treatment of a variety of malignancies. Ototoxicity is a well-known adverse side effect of this drug and has been widely described in reports on clinical and animal studies. Few human temporal bone studies, however, have been performed for cisplatin ototoxicity. This report presents four cases of cisplatin ototoxicity in patients from whom temporal bone specimens with minimal post-mortem autolysis were obtained at autopsy. All patients received between 1 and 6 cycles of cisplatin with doses ran

Temporal bone findings in craniodiaphyseal dysplasia.

To our knowledge, this is the first description of the histopathology of the temporal bone from a case of craniodiaphyseal dysplasia. The air spaces of the mastoid, external auditory canal, and middle ear cavity are reduced by hyperostotic bone. The ossicles are also deformed by the bony overgrowth. Anomalous ossicles with hyperostosis could affect the air conduction. Even though the internal auditory canal is somewhat elongated and narrow, no labyrinthine abnormalities can be attributed to the abnormal bone. Facial nerves run through abnormal courses but the geniculate ganglion cells are not

Facial paralysis in temporal bone trauma.

A retrospective review of 36 patients with delayed-onset (19 patients) and immediate-onset (17 patients) traumatic facial paralysis was performed. We hypothesized that traumatic delayed-onset facial paralysis does not necessitate surgical decompression under any routine circumstances. Of 19 patients in this group, normal recovery (House grade 1) occurred in 94 percent of the patients without surgical intervention. The small percentage (6%) of these patients who failed to recover completely demonstrated mild degrees of weakness and synkinesis (House grade 2). Immediate-onset paralysis occurred

Temporal bone fractures: a clinical diagnosis.

Temporal bone fractures may be complicated by intracranial haemorrhage, C.S.F. leakage and infection, damage to the middle and inner ear and damage to the seventh and eighth cranial nerves. Accurate early diagnosis is important to enable adequate investigation and prompt treatment of any complications. We present eight cases seen in a 12 month period in which a temporal bone fracture was not diagnosed at presentation in spite of a full clinical examination and standard skull radiographs. Five of these cases developed complications which resulted in their referral. The absence of a visible frac

Eighty-two temporal bone fractures were diagnosed in 75 patients with high-resolution computed tomographic scanning. Excluding six gunshot injuries, 55 (72%) of the fractures were oblique, 11 (15%) were longitudinal, and ten (13%) were transverse. Facial paresis or paralysis occurred in 45 patients (60%), hemotympanum occurred in 67 (89%), and cerebrospinal fluid otorrhea occurred in 19 (25%). Among 66 patients in whom audiometry was performed, 20 (30%) had conductive hearing loss, nine (14%) had sensorineural loss, and 36 (55%) had mixed hearing loss. Vestibular symptoms were present in 23 pa

Chemodectomas arising in temporal bone structures.

Eighteen patients with chemodectomas arising in temporal bone structures were evaluated and treated at the University of Florida. Seventeen patients have each been followed a minimum of 3 years. Patients were retrospectively staged as having "Локально" or "advanced" disease, depending on the presence or absence of bone destruction and/or cranial nerve involvement. Fourteen of the patients received radiation therapy as all or part of their therapy; 6 patients were treated with radiation therapy alone, 3 patients were irradiated immediately postoperatively for residual disease, and 5 patients had r

Temporal bone findings in hemifacial microsomia.

The temporal bone findings in a case of hemifacial microsomia are described with photographs. The right facial hypoplasia was associated with anophthalmia and microtia on the same side. The right petrous bone was hypoplastic and showed total superior dehiscence of the internal acoustic meatus. Th otic capsule was deformed with an underdeveloped cochlear modiolus grossly deficient in spiral ganglion population. The spiralling cochlear shell showed partial deficiency of the interscalar septum between the middle and apical coils. The cochlear duct was shorter than that on the normal side; the org

Cholesterol granuloma involving the temporal bone.

The cholesterol granuloma does not represent an independent clinical or pathological entity, rather it is a term used for the description of a tissue response of the temporal bone, to the presence of a particular foreign body, i.e., cholesterol crystals. Three factors are considered to play an important role in its development: 1) interference with drainage, 2) hemorrhage, and 3) obstruction of ventilation. The cause of the initial hemorrhage may be a hemorrhagic inflammation or diathesis, a trauma or some other form of vascular disorder. Interference with air exchange and clearance can be cau

A Rare Case of an Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Temporal Bone.

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign bone lesions mainly occurring at the metaphyseal end of long bones and are a rarity in the calvarium. The reported incidence of this lesion in the skull is 1% of all the ABC. It is a benign condition that may extend intracranially. We report here a case of a 3½-year-old male child who presented with a bony hard, painless, and gradually enlarging swelling over his right temporal region. Radiological investigations and histology revealed that the lesion was an ABC. A total surgical excision was achieved despite its intracranial extension along with the inv

Solid Variant of Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Temporal Bone.

OBJECTIVES: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABC) are benign, rapidly growing osteolytic lesions. Solid variant of ABC (SVABC) is a rare subtype of ABC that has not been reported in the temporal bone. METHODS: We report the case of a 6-year-old boy presenting with a slowly enlarging bony protuberance over the right zygomatic/malar eminence region. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a 2.6 × 5.8 × 5.1 cm temporal bone mass involving the right mastoid, petrous, and temporal squamosal calvarium, with extradural intracranial extension to the middle cranial fossa. RESULTS: The p
