Association between Temporal Muscle Thickness and Overall Survival in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Patients with Brain Metastasis.

Temporal muscle thickness (TMT) has recently been suggested as a novel biomarker of sarcopenia in head and neck malignancies. However, few studies have evaluated TMT as a prognostic marker in patients with brain metastasis. This study investigated the association of TMT with overall survival (OS) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastasis. The records of all NSCLC patients with brain metastasis between 2009 and 2018 at St. Vincent’s Hospital were reviewed retrospectively. A total of 221 patients met our eligibility criteria. In the group with TMT thicker than the medi

Repeated intramuscular injections of nerve growth factor induced progressive muscle hyperalgesia, facilitated temporal summation, and expanded pain areas.

Intramuscular injection of nerve growth factor (NGF) is known to induce deep-tissue mechanical hyperalgesia. In this study it was hypothesised that daily intramuscular injections of NGF produce a progressive manifestation of soreness, mechanical hyperalgesia, and temporal summation of pain. In a double-blind placebo-controlled design, 12 healthy subjects were injected on 3 days with NGF into the tibialis anterior muscle and with isotonic saline on the contralateral side. Assessments were performed before and after the injections on days 0, 1, and 2, and repeated on days 3, 6, and 10. The self-

The neovascularization effect of bone marrow stromal cells in temporal muscle after encephalomyosynangiosis in chronic cerebral ischemic rats.

OBJECTIVE: In Moyamoya disease, the primary goal of treatment is to improve collateral circulation through angiogenesis. In the present study, we obtained and sub-cultured bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) from rats without a cell-mediated immune response. Then, we injected the labeled BMSCs directly into adjacent temporal muscle during encephalomyosynangiosis (EMS). Three weeks after BMSC transplantation, we examined the survival of the cells and the extent of neovascularization. METHODS: We divided 20 rats into a BMSC transplantation group (n=12) and a control group (n=8). Seven days after

Predictive value of changes in temporal muscle volume for 6-month functional outcome in patients with hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accurate prediction of functional outcome after hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (HICH) remains challenging. Temporal muscle volume (TMV), measurable on routine head computed tomography (CT), may reflect skeletal muscle status. This study investigated longitudinal TMV changes, the factors associated with these changes, and their prognostic value in HICH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included 149 patients with HICH involving the thalamus or basal ganglia admitted between January 2022 and December 2023. TMV was measured on admission

Temporal changes in thiol-oxidized plasma albumin are associated with recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage after a marathon.

Exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) can affect athlete performance and is a risk factor for major muscle injury. The temporal profile of thiol-oxidized albumin, a marker of oxidative stress, has shown potential in assessing recovery from EIMD in non-athletically trained participants but not yet in trained participants. Our primary aim was to assess whether there are changes in the level of thiol-oxidized albumin after a marathon in athletically trained participants. Twenty participants completed a marathon and collected daily dried blood spots from 3 days prior to and 7 days after the marath

Spatial and Temporal Muscle Synergies Provide a Dual Characterization of Low-dimensional and Intermittent Control of Upper-limb Movements.

Muscle synergy analysis investigates the neurophysiological mechanisms that the central nervous system employs to coordinate muscles. Several models have been developed to decompose electromyographic (EMG) signals into spatial and temporal synergies. However, using multiple approaches can complicate the interpretation of results. Spatial synergies represent invariant muscle weights modulated with variant temporal coefficients; temporal synergies are invariant temporal profiles that coordinate variant muscle weights. While non-negative matrix factorization allows to extract both spatial and tem

Structural Analysis of Tensor Tympani Muscle, Tympanic Diaphragm, Epitympanum, and Protympanum in Menière's Disease: a Human Temporal Bone Study.

HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesized that there would be significant anatomic differences of the tensor tympani muscle (TTM), tympanic diaphragm, epitympanum, and protympanum in patients with versus without Menière's disease. BACKGROUND: The effects of tenotomy on Menière's disease suggested it relieves the pressure on the inner ear of the contraction of the TTM and of negative middle ear pressure. METHODS: Using human temporal bones from patients with Menière's disease, two studies were conducted. We examined the presence of otitis media, cholesteatoma, and endolymphatic hydrops, the length, diamete

Temporal changes in serum creatine kinase concentration and degree of muscle rigidity in 24 patients with neuroleptic malignant syndrome.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a dangerous adverse response to antipsychotic drugs. It is characterized by the four major clinical symptoms of hyperthermia, severe muscle rigidity, autonomic dysfunction, and altered mental state. Serum creatine kinase (CK) elevation occurs in over 90% of NMS cases. In the present study, the detailed temporal changes in serum CK and degree of muscle rigidity, and the relationship between CK concentration and degree of muscle rigidity over the time course from fever onset, were evaluated in 24 affected patients. The results showed that serum CK peaked o

EMG analysis of the late exteroceptive suppression period of temporal muscle activity in episodic and chronic tension-type headaches.

EMG analysis of the late exteroceptive suppression period of the temporal muscle activity is discussed as comparative methodology in the assessment of patients suffering from chronic tension-type headache and from migraineurs. After electrical perioral trigeminal nerve stimulation during maximum voluntary jaw occlusion, early (ES1) and late (ES2) exteroceptive suppression periods can be registered above the temples using surface EMG recordings. In patients suffering from chronic tension-type headache the duration of the late suppression period is shortened (p less than 0.001) compared to migra

Global lower limb muscle coactivation during walking at different speeds: Relationship between spatio-temporal, kinematic, kinetic, and energetic parameters.

Muscle coactivation is the mechanism that regulates the simultaneous activity of antagonist muscles around the same joint. During walking, muscle joint coactivation varies within the gait cycle according to the functional role of the lower limb joints. In the present study, we used a time-varying multi-muscle coactivation function (TMCf) with the aim of investigating the coactivation of 12 lower limb muscles and its relationship with the gait cycle, gait speed (low, self-selected, and fast), ground reaction force, gait variability, and mechanical energy consumption, and recovery in a sample of
