Lateral antebrachial cutaneous neuropathy following the long head of the biceps rupture.

Lateral antebrachial cutaneous neuropathies present as purely sensory lesions, manifesting as elbow pain or dysesthetic pain over the lateral forearm. Classically, entrapment of the lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve has been documented at the lateral edge of the biceps tendon as it exits the deep fascia in the antecubital fossa. We report a case of lateral antebrachial cutaneous nerve traction neuritis, rather than entrapment, resulting from a rupture of the long head of the biceps. The biceps displaced the nerve laterally, resulting in sensory loss and severe allodynia. The patient's sympt

The safety of the posterior ankle arthroscopy in management of posterior ankle impingement: A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic management of the posterior ankle impingement with the patient in supine position has the advantage of dealing with anterior ankle pathology at the same time without the need to change position of the patient. This study aims at evaluation of the safety of portal establishment and instrumentation of this technique. METHODS: Sixteen fresh-frozen cadaver specimens were used. The relationships of the posteromedial and posterolateral portals to the adjacent tendons and nerves and the relationship of the coaxial portal tract with the posterior ankle capsule and the flexor

Stenosing tenosynovitis of the flexor hallucis longus tendon at the sesamoid area.

The author presents a case of stenosing tenosynovitis of the flexor hallucis longus tendon at the sesamoid area of the great toe following injury of the hallux. Although stenosing tenosynovitis of the flexor hallucis longus tendon is not rare, occurring frequently in ballet dancers, its entrapment at the sesamoid area was rarely described in the literature. Early recognition of this condition is very important for successful treatment. This patient did not respond to nonoperative treatment and surgical tenolysis was very successful for relief of the symptoms.

MR imaging of the tendons of the foot and ankle.

Hindfoot pain from tendon pathology is common and seen in a wide range of patients from young athletes to older sedentary individuals. Magnetic resonance (MR) is an excellent technique for imaging tendons and for identifying injuries that can be treated with surgery. MR also demonstrates the presence of bone marrow edema, which is a cause of pain and often a marker for adjacent tendon injury. Finally, MR can reveal other etiologies that cause similar hindfoot pain, such as osteochondral injuries and impingement. In this article, we review the normal MR appearance of the ankle tendons and tendo

Imaging the long head of biceps tendon--a pictorial essay emphasizing magnetic resonance.

Lesions of the long head of the bicepstendon (BT) are seen in association with tears of the rotator-cuff, particularly lesions of the subscapularis tendon and the rotator-interval. The frequency of positive MR-findings at the BT is approximately 25%. The pathologic alterations include complete medial luxation, subluxation and entrapment by the subscapularis tendon, tendinitis or tendovaginitis and lesions at the origin of the tendon at the superior labrum (superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP)--lesions). The imaging signs of BT pathology on MR include an abnormal course and position of

Bilateral asymmetric popliteal entrapment syndrome treated with successful surgical decompression and adjunctive thrombolysis.

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES) is the most common cause of lower leg claudication in patients younger than 50 years. The different types of PAES can result in different rates of arterial damage, leading to aneurysmal degeneration or occlusion. We report a rare case of a young patient presenting with asymmetrical bilateral popliteal artery entrapment. Type III PAES on the right resulted in severe limb ischemia and was treated by division of the accessory tendon and replacement of damaged artery with vein graft. On the left, the medial head of gastrocnemius was resected to release a

De Quervain's Tendinitis Following Trapeziectomy for the Management of Trapeziometacarpal Arthritis: A Case Report.

De Quervain's tendonitis develops when multiple factors coincide, causing the entrapment of two valuable tendons responsible for the normal range of motion of the thumb. Consequently, symptoms such as pain in the radial side of the wrist and difficulty in grasping and pinching manifest. This case report aims to discuss the presentation of De Quervain's tendinitis following trapeziectomy with suspensionplasty using the Mini TightRope implant (Arthrex, Inc., Naples, USA) for the management of trapeziometacarpal arthritis.

Anatomic relationship of the sural nerve when performing Achilles tendon repair using the percutaneous Achilles repair system, a cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive techniques for Achilles tendon repair are increasing due to reports of similar rerupture rates using open and percutaneous techniques with fewer wound complications and quicker recovery with percutaneous methods. The goal of this study was to investigate quantitatively the relationship and risk of injury to the sural nerve during Achilles tendon repair when using the Percutaneous Achilles Repair System (PARS) (Arthrex®, Naples, FL), by recording the distance between the passed needles and the sural nerve as well identifying any direct violation of the nerve with

Does the presence of the palmaris longus tendon influence median nerve function?

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to determine if the presence or absence of a palmaris longis tendon influenced the function of the median nerve across the wrist. The primary hypothesis was that the presence of a palmaris longus tendon would be associated with more median nerve entrapment at the wrist. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Subjects were recruited at a screening of dental professionals. The median and ulnar sensory nerve latencies across the wrist (relative prolongation of the median compared with the ulnar) and the presence or absence of the palmaris longus

Bilateral suprascapular nerve entrapment by glenoid labral cysts associated with rotator cuff damage and posterior instability in an amateur weightlifter.

Suprascapular nerve entrapment is a common condition in athletes. The entrapment is most frequently due to a "glenoid labral cyst" produced by joint fluid extrusion in consequence of labral degenerative changes. The bilaterality of the entrapment and the association with rotator cuff pathology are a rare evidence. We present the case of a 38-year-old amateur weightlifter with an history of left shoulder chronic posterior pain and progressive external rotation weakness, and with an acute right shoulder pain and weakness. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a bilateral glenoid labral cyst in assoc

Extensor digitorum longus tenosynovitis caused by talar head impingement in an ultramarathon runner: a case report.

Stenosing tenosynovitis of the extensor digitorum longus tendon is an injury related to ultramarathon running. A 32-year-old male ultramarathon runner developed chronic tenosynovitis of the ankle dorsiflexors. He was diagnosed with extensor digitorum longus tenosynovitis caused by talar head impingement associated with exostosis. He failed to respond to non-operative management and decided to undergo tenosynovectomy of the extensor digitorum longus tendon. The pain was relieved without functional disturbance of the foot and ankle, and the patient returned to running 3 weeks postoperatively. At

Use of high-resolution ultrasound in evaluation of the forefoot to differentiate forefoot nerve entrapments.

Forefoot pain can have single or multiple etiologies, and frequently pain is attributed solely to a forefoot nerve entrapment. It is well known that forefoot nerve entrapments, such as Morton's, can be falsely assumed to be the cause of forefoot pain when in fact other factors, such as plantar plate disturbances, are the true cause. Frequently, the cause of the patient's forefoot pain starts as a forefoot nerve entrapment, but then, as a result of treatment with a corticosteroid injection, other pathologies manifest, such as plantar plate rupture. The development of high-resolution, high-frequ

Calcaneal Fracture-Dislocation: A Case Report.

Calcaneal fracture-dislocations are rare, high-energy injuries in which the sustentacular fragment typically remains stable, while the posterolateral fragment is displaced laterally. These injuries are frequently associated with additional fractures, ligamentous disruption, or tendon entrapment, and they present considerable diagnostic and surgical challenges. Accurate imaging and meticulous operative planning are essential to restoring hindfoot alignment and function. We report the case of a 45-year-old woman with a calcaneal fracture-dislocation, treated via a medial approach to enable accur

A posterior interosseous nerve syndrome associated with spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon.

Posterior interosseous nerve entrapment syndrome and spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon are rare conditions. The authors describe the bizarre combination of a spontaneous rupture of the extensor pollicis longus tendon in a 82-year-old lady with a posterior interosseous nerve syndrome. As far as the authors know, this is the first description of such an association in the literature. Surgical exploration revealed compression of the posterior interosseous nerve at the proximal portion of the supinator muscle and at Henry's leash. The nerve was freed, and the tendon of the

Multiple Musculotendinous Variations in the Limbs: A Cadaveric Case Report.

Muscle and tendon variations in the upper and lower extremities are common but often go unnoticed due to their asymptomatic nature, typically being incidental findings on radiological imaging. These anatomical variations, widely documented in scientific literature, can impact clinical procedures and surgeries. Particularly, the accessory muscles have been implicated in different forms of entrapment neuropathy syndromes. This case report details the muscle and tendon variations observed during the short-term dissection project. The variations included additional muscle in the flexor aspect of t
