Anthracnose and fruit fly infestation are major biotic constraints on guava (Psidium guajava) production in South Asia, causing substantial yield losses and post-harvest degradation. Early-stage symptoms (lesions < 2 mm, subtle puncture marks) are often imperceptible to the naked eye, making timely intervention difficult. This study develops a deep learning-based classification system for early detection of both conditions using a dataset of 473 annotated guava fruit images from Bangladesh, verified by a plant pathologist, and pre-processed with unsharp masking and Contrast Limited Adaptive Hi

Integrating entomopathogenic fungi (EPF) into crop protection programs requires ensuring their compatibility with insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides to enable simultaneous applications and reduce operational costs. Compatibility is typically assessed by incorporating pesticides into growth media and measuring toxicity through germination, growth, and sporulation (Biological Index). However, field applications mainly expose conidia directly to pesticides, potentially leading to mismatches between laboratory and real-world outcomes. Here, we evaluated the compatibility of 5 fungicides (cop

RNA N6-methyladenine (m6A) modification represents a pivotal epigenetic modification that facilitates the remodeling of gene expression and regulates a variety of biological processes via certain post-transcriptional mechanisms. However, the specific function of RNA m6A modification in insect male reproduction remains unclear. In this study, we explored the molecular mechanism by which METTL3/METTL14-mediated RNA m6A modification regulates male reproduction in the invasive pest Bactrocera dorsalis. The results showed that BdMettl3 and BdMettl14 were highly expressed in fat body (FB) and male a

BACKGROUND: Bactrocera dorsalis is a major agricultural pest whose larvae cause significant economic losses by damaging fruits and vegetables. Targeting male fertility is a promising strategy to suppress pest populations. Ubiquitin-activating enzyme 1 (Uba1), a key component in the ubiquitination process, is essential for diverse cellular processes. However, its role in reproduction has been rarely studied in agricultationural pests. In this study, we reported the role of Uba1 in regulating male reproduction in B. dorsalis.
RESULTS: We found that the Uba1 gene is highly expressed in the teste

Heritable symbionts display a wide variety of transmission strategies to travel from one insect generation to the next. Parasitoid wasps, one of the most diverse insect groups, maintain several heritable associations with viruses that are beneficial for wasp survival during their development as parasites of other insects. Most of these beneficial viral entities are strictly transmitted through the wasp germline as endogenous viral elements within wasp genomes. However, a beneficial poxvirus inherited by Diachasmimorpha longicaudata wasps, known as Diachasmimorpha longicaudata entomopoxvirus (D

Endosymbiont-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) may play an important role in arthropod speciation. However, whether CI consistently becomes associated or coupled with other host-related forms of reproductive isolation (RI) to impede the transfer of endosymbionts between hybridizing populations and further the divergence process remains an open question. Here, we show that varying degrees of pre- and postmating RI exist among allopatric populations of two interbreeding cherry-infesting tephritid fruit flies (Rhagoletis cingulata and R. indifferens) across North America. These flies displ

The olive fruit fly (OFF), Bactrocera oleae is the most devastating pest affecting olive fruit worldwide. Previous investigations have addressed the fungal microbiome associated with olive drupes or B. oleae, but the impact of the insect on fungal communities of olive fruit remains undescribed. In the present work, the fungal microbiome of olive drupes, infested and non-infested by the OFF, was investigated in four different localities and cultivars. Olive fruit fly infestations caused a general reduction of the fungal diversity, a higher quantity of the total DNA and an increase in taxa that

Bacteria are known to colonize the insect gut and determine a positive effect on their host's fitness, for example, by providing essential nutrients or improving digestion efficiency. However, information on the colonization of the insect gut by fungi and their nutritional contribution is still scarce and fragmentary. In this study, the presence of Candida tropicalis, a fungus abundant in the black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens, BSF) larvae's gut and environment, was determined in the different gut regions. In addition, metabolites present in larvae fed with a fungus-containing diet were dete

The sterile insect technique (SIT) is a highly effective biologically-based method for the suppression of many insect pest populations. SIT efficacy could be improved by methods of male sterilization that avoid the use of irradiation that can result in diminished fitness and mating competitiveness. Alternative sterilization methods include conditional disruption of genes for male fertility, or using their sperm-specific promoters to drive the expression of genes for lethal effectors. Testing has begun for the testis-specific β2-tubulin gene, though additional male fertility genes are required

BACKGROUND: Insecticide resistance among invasive tephritid fruit flies poses a great risk to national food security and has the potential to disrupt quarantine and eradication programs, which rely on the efficacy of Spinosad to prevent widespread establishment in North America. During 2022 to 2023 we surveyed the extent of Spinosad resistance of two key species, oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis, and melon fly Zeugodacus cucurbitae, from 20 sites across five Hawaiian Islands including Kaua'i, O'ahu, Maui, Molokai and the "Big Island" (Hawai'i).

Under nutrient-poor conditions, animals must save energy by adjusting their behavior and physiology in order to survive. Although the impact of feeding state on olfactory sensory neuron activity has been well studied, the regulatory mechanisms underlying the transcriptional changes in odorant receptors (Ors) induced by feeding signals are seldom mentioned. Here, we showed that starvation could attenuate antennal responses of Bactrocera dorsalis toward multiple odorants, which could be reverted by sugar re-feeding, but not by a protein-rich diet. Using methyl eugenol (ME) as a paradigm, our stu

Episodes of isolation and secondary contact among populations of insects of Nearctic origin during Pleistocene glacial/postglacial climatic cycles had a strong evolutionary influence on the diversity of flies in the genus Rhagoletis in mountainous areas of Mexico. As a series of experiments undertaken to gather support for phylogenetic hypotheses on the origin of three walnut-infesting species in the suavis group, we examined pre- and postzygotic isolation between Rhagoletis completa Cresson, 1929 and R. ramosae Hernández-Ortiz, 1985. Despite morphological, biological, and behavioral differenc

The guava fruit fly, Bactrocera correcta, is widely distributed in Thailand and other surrounding Southeast Asian countries, and, like the closely related sympatric species, the oriental fruit fly, B. dorsalis, infests various fruits, including guava, peach, and mango. Males of both B. correcta and B. dorsalis are strongly attracted to, and compulsively feed on, methyl eugenol (ME). Bactrocera dorsalis males fed on ME sequester its metabolite phenylpropanoids, (E)-coniferyl alcohol and 2-allyl-4,5-dimethoxyphenol, in the rectal pheromone gland. In contrast, B. correcta males fed on ME sequeste

RNA viruses are common in tephritid fruit flies including the Queensland fruit fly, Australia's most significant horticultural pest. For many their transmission, tissue tropism and load across host development remain unexplored. Yet these factors are important for host biology, ecology and pest management. We investigated Bactrocera tryoni orbivirus (OV), Bactrocera tryoni xinmovirus (XV), Bactrocera tryoni toti-like virus (TLV) and Bactrocera tryoni iflavirus species 2 (IVsp.2) that commonly coinfect B. tryoni laboratory populations. OV and XV transmission was vertical within and on eggs, whi

The oriental fruit fly, Bactrocera dorsalis (Diptera: Tephritidae), an important invasive fruit and vegetable pest, exhibits a broad host range that includes citrus, mango, and banana. Its larvae bore into fruit tissues, causing severe economic losses. Cadmium (Cd²⁺) is classified among the most toxic heavy metal contaminants, capable of accumulating in plants and biomagnifying through food chains, thereby threatening biodiversity and human health. This study assessed the effects of Cd²⁺ stress on B. dorsalis larval growth and development, alongside changes in key enzymatic activities and tran

Eupatorium adenophorum, an invasive plant species of global concern, imposes substantial ecological and economic burdens across its introduced range. This study investigated the tripartite interaction between E. adenophorum, its obligate phytophagous insect Procecidochares utilis, and the insect's enteric microbiota. We isolated Kluyvera ascorbata ZLSY22, a gut-associated bacterium from P. utilis larvae, demonstrating potent herbicidal activity against the host plant. Bioactivity-guided characterization identified methyl 3-indolyacetate (MeIAA) as the principal phytotoxin, exhibiting concentra

Phytosanitary irradiation is an attractive treatment option for fresh fruits and vegetables, as it is effective, leaves no chemical residues, and in most cases results in fewer impacts to commodity quality than other treatment types such as heat-based treatments or methyl bromide fumigation. The dose of irradiation needed to mitigate a specific pest species is determined on the basis of a substantial body of research, reviewed, and approved by a national plant protection organization. Generic doses, used to treat several related species under a single dose, have been developed and approved for

The Mexican fruit fly Anastrepha ludens Loew (Diptera: Tephritidae) is one of the most important insects infesting mangoes, citrus, and other fruits in Mexico and other Latin-American countries. Quarantine methods approved to destroy this insect decrease the shelf life of commodities. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of high-pressure processing using an initial temperature of 50 degrees C on the survivorship of eggs and larvae of the Mexican fruit fly. Eggs and larvae were pressurized at 25, 50, 75, 100, or 150 MPa for 0, 5, 10, or 20 min. The hatching ability of pressur

BACKGROUND: Zeugodacus cucurbitae is an agricultural pest species with robust reproductive capabilities capable of causing extensive damage. The advent of novel male fertility-related pest control strategies has been an area of active entomological research focused on the sterile insect technique (SIT) strategy.
RESULTS: RNA-sequencing analyses were conducted using 16 tissue samples from adult male Z. cucurbitae, leading to the identification of 5338 genes that were differentially expressed between the testes and three other analyzed tissue types. Of these genes, 808 exhibited high levels of
