Residual limb skin temperature and thermal comfort in people with amputation during activity in a cold environment.

Thermal comfort remains a common problem for people with lower-limb amputation. Both donning a prosthesis and engaging in activity at room temperature can increase residual limb skin temperature; however, the effects of activity on skin temperature and comfort in more extreme environments remain unknown. We examined residual limb skin temperatures and perceived thermal comfort (PTC; 11-point Likert scale) of participants with unilateral transtibial amputation (n = 8) who were snowshoeing in a cold environment. Residual limb skin temperature increased by 3.9°C [3.0°C to 4.7°C] (mean difference

[Obstetrical ultrasound: can the fetus hear the wave and feel the heat?].

"Fetuses can hear ultrasound and the sound is as loud as a subway train entering a station." This statement originates in a single report in a non-peer reviewed journal, despite its name 1, of a presentation at a scientific meeting by researchers who reported measuring the sound intensity in the uterus of pregnant women and being able to demonstrate the above. This was later published in a peer-review journal 2 probably not very widely read by clinicians or the general public. From time to time, the popular press or various pregnancy-related websites repeat the assertion or a worried pregnant

Poikilothermia in a 38-year-old Fabry patient.

A Fabry patient with poikilothermia is described. Laboratory investigations, neuro-imaging and autonomic function tests did not disclose a cause. Assessment of intra-epidermal nerve fibre density and quantitative sensory testing revealed small fibre neuropathy with a highly impaired cold sensation. We speculate that the poikilothermia is either caused by a vascular lesion in the hypothalamus not visible on MRI or by small fibre neuropathy leading to disturbed body temperature perception and therefore impaired thermoregulation.

Facial cold-induced vasodilation and skin temperature during exposure to cold wind.

One purpose of this study was to characterize the facial skin temperature and cold-induced vasodilation (CIVD) response of 12 subjects (six males and six females) during exposure to cold wind (i.e., -10 to 10 degrees C; 2, 5, and 8 m/s wind speed). This study found that at each wind speed, facial skin temperature decreased as ambient temperature decreased. The percentage of subjects showing facial CIVD decreased significantly at an ambient temperature above -10 degrees C. A similar CIVD percentage was observed between 0 degrees C dry and 10 degrees C wet (face sprayed with fine water mist) at

Tail-flick test. I: Impact of a suprathreshold exposure to radiant heat on pain reactivity in rats.

Radiant heat applied to the tail elicits a vigorous tail-flick response in rats. This tail-flick reflex is frequently used to measure pain reactivity. Prior research has shown that a suprathreshold exposure to the radiant heat used to elicit this reflex causes a reduction in tail-flick latencies in pentobarbital anesthetized rats. Experiment 1 replicated this observation and showed that the effect is not due to a change in tail temperature. Experiment 2 showed that reduced latencies (hyperalgesia) are not observed if the spinal cord is transected prior to testing. Experiment 3 revealed that pe

Ultralate cerebral potentials as correlates of delayed pain perception: observation in a case of neurosyphilis.

Evoked cerebral potentials were investigated in a patient with neurosyphilis, who showed the symptoms of delayed pain perception in the lower limbs: a pinprick to the legs was perceived with a latency of more than one second. After stimulation with CO2 laser radiant heat pulses, evoked cerebral potentials of upper limbs were observed in a latency range comparable to those of healthy subjects, with a negative peak at 250 ms and a positive peak at 370 ms. In contrast, after application of laser stimuli to body sites with delayed pain perception, latency of the evoked potentials drastically incre

[Cold constitution: analysis of the questionnaire].

"Hie-sho" means having a cold constitution. The authors studied basic data for cold constitution with a questionnaire and with the Cornell Medical Index. The subjects were 318 females, and the average age was 26.4 +/- 6.1 (Mean +/- SD) and the range was 20 approximately 51 years of age. The results were as follows: (1) 38.7% of the subjects had been conscious of having a cold constitution, and it was recognized that the subjects with a cold constitution are found not only in the climacterium but also in the young. (2) The average age of onset of cold constitution was 19.3 +/- 5.1 years old. (3

Dynamic impacts of face masks and walking duration on pedestrian thermal comfort in shaded outdoor environments during summer.

The normalization of mask-wearing in the post-pandemic era has raised concerns regarding its potential thermal burden during outdoor physical activities, especially in hot and humid climates. This study examines the combined effects of face mask type (no mask, surgical mask, and KN95 mask) and walking duration on physiological responses and thermal comfort in shaded outdoor environments during summer. Field experiments were conducted in Guangzhou with 28 participants walking at three speeds (1.2, 1.4, and 1.6 m/s). Key physiological parameters (mean skin temperature, heart rate, tympanic tempe

Pain threshold induced by local exposure to millimeter waves on human skin.

Exposure to millimeter waves potentially causes pain and tissue damage at the exposed body sites. However, the threshold temperature, especially the pain threshold, remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the perception thresholds of four different types of sensations-warmth, heat, tingling, and pain-and individual physical characteristics associated with the pain perception induced by millimeter-wave exposure. Thirty-five healthy adults were exposed to a 28-GHz millimeter wave on their left middle fingertip at an input power of 8.5 W (incident power density averaged over a 1 cm2 area:

Enhancement of Exercise Capacity in the Heat With Repeated Menthol-Spray Application.

Purpose: Exercise performance is impaired in the heat, and a contributing factor to this decrement is thermal discomfort. Menthol spraying of skin is one means of alleviating thermal discomfort but has yet to be shown to be ergogenic using single-spray applications. The authors examined whether repeated menthol spraying could relieve thermal discomfort, reduce perception of exertion, and improve exercise performance in hot (35°C), dry (22% relative humidity) conditions, hypothesizing that it would. Methods: A total of 8 trained cyclists completed 2 separate conditions of fixed-intensity cyclin

Pain and thermal sensation in the cold: the effect of interval versus continuous exercise.

Military and factory work often involves exposure to cold temperatures. With prolonged exposure, individuals report feeling cold and develop pain in their hands, both of which might be alleviated by endogenous heat production via exercise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate how interval (INT) and continuous (CONT) cycle ergometry alter thermal sensation, hand pain, mean finger temperature, and skin surface temperature gradient (forearm-finger) following immobility in moderate cold. Fourteen young men underwent two trials (each was three total hours in 5°C) consisting of a 90-min period

The effect of exercise-induced elevation in core temperature on cold-induced vasodilatation response in toes.

Cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) has been proposed as a potential protective mechanism against cold injuries during exposure of extremities to a cold environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of exercise and the associated elevation in core temperature on toe skin temperatures during immersion of the foot in cold (8 degrees C) water. Subjects (N = 8) participated in two trials. In one, they conducted an incremental exercise to exhaustion (exercise) on a cycle ergometer, which was followed by immersion of the right foot in 8 degrees C water. In the second trial (contro

An analysis of changes in sensory thresholds to mild tactile and cold stimuli after experimental spinal cord injury in the rat.

Changes in sensory function including chronic pain and allodynia are common sequelae of spinal cord injury (SCI) in humans. The present study documents the extent and time course of mechanical allodynia and cold hyperalgesia after contusion SCI in the rat using stimulation with graded von Frey filaments (4.97-50.45 g force) and ice probes. Fore- and hind-paw withdrawal thresholds to plantar skin stimulation were determined in rats with a range of SCI severities (10-g weight dropped from 6.25, 12.5, or 25 mm using the MASCIS injury device); animals with 25-mm injuries most consistently showed d

Inhibition of cutaneous nociception by deep musculoskeletal pain. A clinical observation.

A patient is reported in whom deep musculoskeletal pain apparently blocked transmission from nociceptive cutaneous fibers in an adjacent region. When the deep musculoskeletal pain was abolished with local anesthesia, the cutaneous hypalgesia disappeared. Naloxone did not influence the hypalgesia. Possible mechanisms are discussed.

Activation of TRPV4 promotes transepithelial K+ secretion in rat vaginal epithelium.

BACKGROUND: Transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) is a non-selective cation channel that regulates diverse biological processes, including osmoregulation, thermosensation, and ion transport. As a key component of the female reproductive tract, the vaginal epithelium plays a crucial role in maintaining luminal moisture and lubrication. However, the contribution of TRPV4 to vaginal epithelial function remains unclear. AIM: To characterize the expression pattern of TRPV4 in vaginal epithelial cells and to elucidate its physiological role in regulating transepithelial ion transport and

Cold intolerance of the hand measured by the CISS questionnaire in a normative study population.

Cold intolerance has been recognized as one of the most disabling sequelae of upper extremity trauma, especially when neurovascular structures are involved. In this study, we aimed to describe cold intolerance in a normative study population, validate the Cold Intolerance Symptom Severity (CISS) questionnaire and define the threshold for abnormal cold intolerance. One hundred and eight volunteers participated in our study. In addition to the CISS score, information about age, gender and previous surgery or trauma to the upper extremity was obtained. There were no volunteers with previous perip
