The anatomy of the cervicothoracic sympathetic nerves was studied in the rat. Details of the arrangements of white and grey rami communicantes and superior cervical, middle cervical and stellate ganglia are given. Dorsal root and sympathetic ganglion neurones projecting to skin and muscle of the forelimb and trunk were labelled retrogradely with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in order to study their number, segmental distribution and location. HRP was applied to forelimb nerves supplying skeletal muscles (Ramus profundus of radial nerve, RP) or hairy skin (N. cutaneus brachii lateralis superior

BackgroundLong thoracic nerve (LTN) neuropathy occasionally occurs in young people who engage in various sports. It may have a traumatic or non-traumatic etiology. The landmark manifestation of LTN neuropathy is scapular winging; however, it can also occur without scapular winging and specific magnetic resonance imaging findings.CaseAn 18-year-old male complained of right-sided lateral chest pain for 7 months. He was treated with medication, trigger point injection, and physical therapy but showed no improvement. Electromyelogram findings suggested LTN neuropathy in the right lateral chest. We

The spinal segmental localization of preganglionic neurons which convey activity to the sympathetic nerves, i.e. vertebral nerve, right inferior cardiac nerve, sympathetic fibres in the thoracic vagus and cervical sympathetic trunk, was determined on the right side in chloralose anaesthetized cats. For that purpose the upper thoracic white rami were electrically stimulated with a single pulse, suprathreshold for B and C fibres, and the evoked responses were recorded in the sympathetic nerves. The relative preganglionic input from each segment of the spinal cord to the four sympathetic nerves w

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury is a recognized complication of aortic surgery, yet data on long-term functional outcomes remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and to assess voice recovery after thoracic aortic surgery.
METHODS: Single-centre retrospective analysis included adult patients undergoing aortic arch or thoracoabdominal aortic surgery between 2001 and 2024. Recurrent laryngeal nerve injury was diagnosed by postoperative vocal cord paralysis. Aortic arch surgery included partial and total arch replacement, while t

Thoracic surgery rapidly induces weakness in human diaphragm fibers. The dysfunction is thought to arise from combined effects of the surgical procedures and inactivity. This project tested whether brief bouts of intraoperative hemidiaphragm stimulation would mitigate slow and fast fiber loss of force in the human diaphragm. We reasoned that maintenance of diaphragm activity with brief bouts of intraoperative phrenic stimulation would mitigate diaphragm fiber weakness and myofilament protein derangements caused by thoracic surgery. Nineteen adults (9 females, age 59 ± 12 years) with normal ins

The long thoracic nerve's (LTN) superficial location on the chest wall renders it vulnerable to iatrogenic injury. Plastic surgeons' gender-affirming mastectomy volumes are rapidly increasing. This operation involves lateral chest contouring placing the distal LTN at risk of injury along the chest wall. Although proximal LTN injury can cause debilitating shoulder dysfunction, more distal injury can cause chronic postoperative shoulder pain and dysfunction without frank scapular winging, making diagnosis and treatment difficult. Therefore, injury is best avoided. In this study, the course of th

BACKGROUND: Rib fractures are frequently diagnosed and treated in the emergency department (ED). Thoracic trauma has serious morbidity and mortality, particularly in older adults, with complications including pulmonary contusions, hemorrhage, pneumonia, or death. Bedside ED-performed ultrasound-guided anesthesia is gaining in popularity, and early and adequate pain control has shown improved patient outcomes with rare complications.
OBJECTIVE OF THE REVIEW: We describe thoracic nerve block options that can be used clinically for rib fractures or other thoracic pain or trauma. We identify the

OBJECTIVES: In patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for pneumothorax, the benefits and risks of single-shot intercostal nerve block as loco-regional analgesia are not well known. We retrospectively compared the effectiveness of intercostal nerve blocks as a viable alternative to thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) regarding pain control and enhanced recovery.
METHODS: A retrospective multicentre analysis with single-centre propensity score matching was performed in patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for pneumothorax receiving either TEA or intercostal n

BACKGROUND: Pectus excavatum is the most common congenital chest wall abnormality, with the Nuss procedure being the most commonly performed repair. Pain control is the predominant factor in the postoperative treatment of these patients. This study aims to compare the cost and outcomes of intercostal nerve cryoablation (INC) and thoracic epidural (TE) in patients undergoing the Nuss procedure.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at our institution for all patients who underwent the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum from 2002 to 2020. Patients were stratified by pain manageme

BACKGROUND: Intrathecal catheter placement has long-term therapeutic benefits in the management of chronic, intractable pain. Despite the diverse clinical applicability and rising prevalence of implantable drug delivery systems in pain medicine, the spectrum of complications associated with intrathecal catheterization remains largely understudied and underreported in the literature.
OBJECTIVE: To report a case of thoracic nerve root entrapment resulting from intrathecal catheter migration.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
SETTING: Inpatient hospital service.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is a common complication after thoracic surgery. The most important factor appears to be intercostal nerve damage. The purpose of this prospective study was to objectively evaluate intercostal nerve damage associated with post-thoracotomy pain after three surgical procedures using current perception threshold testing.
METHODS: The 32 patients were classified into three groups: the video-assisted thoracic surgery group (n=7), the video-assisted minithoracotomy with metal retractors group (n=15), and the conventional thoracotomy group (n=10). Intercostal nerve function w

We describe a 42-year-old patient who incurred long thoracic nerve palsy after using one axillary crutch. The patient sustained fractures to his left tibia and fibula. The fractures required internal fixation with a locked intramedullary nail and postoperative restricted weightbearing using axillary crutches. When weightbearing was progressed, the patient began using one axillary crutch on the right side. The resulting asymmetric gait pattern forced the crutch onto his chest wall, which led to right-sided long thoracic nerve palsy. The patient had not recovered 6 months after the injury. When

BACKGROUND: Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve is a potential complication in thoracic surgery, and may lead to postoperative dysfunction due to the resulting insufficient glottal closure. The aim of this study was, first, to develop an interdisciplinary concept of early diagnosis and adequate therapy of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis (RLNP), and second, to investigate efficiency of this approach.
METHODS: 120 patients (77 male, 43 female) aged between 15 and 85 years (mean 57 years) were examined otolaryngologically before and after thoracic surgery. Individual therapeutic modaliti

Acute burn injury is usually associated with pain in the injured and nearby areas. However, we have recently reported that a thoracic scald induces hindpaw hyperalgesia during the healing stage in rats. The present study investigated the cause of the remotely occurring hyperalgesia. Behavioral testing using the von Frey test revealed that rats developed hyperalgesia in the neck and flank as well as the hindpaw 2-3 weeks after injury. The concentration of nerve growth factor (NGF) in the skin of the chest increased markedly during the healing stage. Moreover, rats injected daily with anti-NGF s

Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome (ACNES) and thoracic radiculopathy are rare forms of abdominal pain. Therefore, we herein report an older man with chronic right lower abdominal pain from coexisting ACNES and thoracic radiculopathy, probably triggered by asymptomatic thoracic compression fractures and significant weight loss. The diagnosis was confirmed based on a positive Carnett's sign and immediate pain relief after the diagnostic lidocaine injection. Imaging revealed a T12 compression fracture with narrowing of the right T11/12 intervertebral foramen. This case highlights the n
