Ethno-veterinary control of bovine dermatophilosis and ticks in Zhombe, Njelele and Shamrock resettlement in Zimbabwe.

A structured questionnaire survey was conducted to determine the ethno-veterinary practices and other control methods used by smallholder farmers for the management of bovine dermatophilosis and ticks. A total of 153 farmers were interviewed from Njelele, Zhombe communal and Shamrock resettlement areas. Crop production contributed most to livelihoods (83.2 %) while livestock contributed 9.0 %. Over 90 % of the respondents had attended school up to primary level, with 11.4 % undergoing animal health and husbandry training. Treatment of livestock diseases was practised by 96 % of the farmers, an

[Efficiency of control of Ixodes ticks, vectors of natural and focal infections in the south of the Tyumen Region].

There are synchronous undulating variations in the number of ticks and in the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis and Ixodes tick-borne borreliosis in the south of the Tyumen Region. Since 1990s, there has been an increase in the incidence of tick-borne infections and in the number of ticks. The highest epidemic risk areas of 1418 have been treated with acaricides due to the additional financing made by the Tyumen Region in 2002-2004. The treatments with the agents Sipaz-super and Briz (25% c.e. cipermethrin) have ensured 98-100% freedom of the areas from ticks. In Tyumen and in the south of

Evidence for Personal Protective Measures to Reduce Human Contact With Blacklegged Ticks and for Environmentally Based Control Methods to Suppress Host-Seeking Blacklegged Ticks and Reduce Infection with Lyme Disease Spirochetes in Tick Vectors and Rodent Reservoirs.

In the 1980s, the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say, and rodents were recognized as the principal vector and reservoir hosts of the Lyme disease spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi in the eastern United States, and deer were incriminated as principal hosts for I. scapularis adults. These realizations led to pioneering studies aiming to reduce the risk for transmission of B. burgdorferi to humans by attacking host-seeking ticks with acaricides, interrupting the enzootic transmission cycle by killing immatures infesting rodent reservoirs by means of acaricide-treated nesting material, or reduc

Fluazuron Baits in the Control of Amblyomma sculptum Tick: Efficacy and Pharmacokinetics Using Guinea Pigs as an Experimental Model.

The tick Amblyomma sculptum is the vector of the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii (which causes Brazilian Spotted Fever in humans). It can be found in domestic and wild animals, as well as humans. The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficacy of baits containing fluazuron in the control of A. sculptum in guinea pigs that were artificially infested. The work was conducted in two studies: descriptive pharmacokinetics and efficacy. Descriptive pharmacokinetics was assessed after administering one fluazuron-containing bait per animal (10 mg/kg). To determine the pharmacokinetic profile, b

Development of essential oil-based phyto-formulations to control the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus using a mixture design approach.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is one of the most important ectoparasites for livestock in tropical and subtropical areas around the world. This tick economically impacts cattle production by reducing weight gain and milk production. Moreover, it is a vector of pathogens causing diseases such as babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Conventional tick control relies mainly on the use of chemical acaricides; however, their intensive use has led to the rapid appearance of resistant tick populations. It is therefore necessary to look for alternative tick control products. In that sense

A rodent and tick bait for controlling white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) and blacklegged ticks (Ixodes scapularis), the respective pathogen host and vector of the Lyme disease spirochetes.

A promising alternative approach to conventional vector and rodent control practices is the use of a bait containing a rodenticide and acaricide in controlling vectors and pathogen reservoirs concurrently. In the United States, Lyme disease continues to be the most prevalent vector-borne disease with approximately 500,000 Lyme disease cases estimated each year. Previous research has demonstrated the usefulness of a low dose fipronil bait in controlling Ixodes scapularis larvae feeding on white-footed mice. However, considering white-footed mice can be an unwanted species because of their assoc

Risk factors for α-Gal syndrome: A case-control study exploring the role of tick bites in French Guiana.

α-Gal Syndrome (AGS) is an IgE-mediated allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (α-Gal), a carbohydrate found in non-primate mammalian tissues. AGS manifests as delayed anaphylactic reactions following the consumption of mammalian meat or exposure to products containing α-Gal. Recent studies confirm tick bites may be a key sensitizing factor. This study aimed to investigate tick bites and other potential risk factors for AGS in French Guiana. A retrospective case-control study was conducted at the Cayenne Hospital Center between January 2021 and October 2022. Cases were defined as adults with cli

Field evaluation of integrated tick management strategies, including Allium sativum supplementation, for control of Rhipicephalus microplus in beef cattle.

Resistance of Rhipicephalus microplus to acaricides is a growing problem for livestock farming, compromising the effectiveness of conventional treatments and increasing production costs. This study evaluated 3% Allium sativum (garlic) dietary supplementation combined with paddock rotation as a complementary strategy for tick control in naturally infested beef cattle under commercial farming conditions in Uruguay. The beef cattle (n = 518; < 2 years old; 245 ± 44.7 kg) were sequentially allocated to six groups, three of which did not have the garlic supplement: ivermectin (IVM, 600 μg/kg, subcu

Pepscan and bioinformatic strategies for identification of potential B-cell epitopes for a peptide-based vaccine for tick control.

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus poses a major problem to the livestock industry worldwide, with acaricides resistance presenting an increasing challenge. On other hand, vaccination has been suggested as a better strategy for tick control, and peptide-based vaccines could be developed to target multiple tick antigens. Nevertheless, there are still limitations to the identification of epitopes in tick candidate antigens, as the bioinformatics tools currently available were developed almost exclusively based on mammalian genomes. Therefore, improving the performance of B-cell epitope pred

A randomized, controlled field study to assess the efficacy and safety of lotilaner (Credelio™) in controlling ticks in client-owned cats in Europe.

BACKGROUND: There is a continuing need for novel approaches to tick infestations treatment and control in cats. Lotilaner, an isoxazoline with rapid onset of action, has proven its efficacy against ticks in laboratory studies. A study was undertaken to confirm lotilaner's efficacy and safety in client-owned cats, at the minimum dose of 6.0 mg/kg, against the most common ticks infesting cats in Europe. METHODS: Twenty clinics in Germany, Hungary and Portugal participated in the study. Households with no more than three cats were randomized 2:1 to a lotilaner or fipronil group. The first househ

Designing an Intervention Trial of Human-Tick Encounters and Tick-Borne Diseases in Residential Settings Using 4-Poster Devices to Control Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae): Challenges for Site Selection and Device Placement.

Blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, transmit Lyme disease spirochetes and other human pathogens in the eastern United States. White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are key reproductive hosts for I. scapularis adults, and therefore control methods targeting deer have the potential for landscape-wide tick suppression. A controlled trial of a novel primary prevention program for Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses.

To evaluate a theory-based educational program to prevent Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses (TBI), a randomized controlled trial of an educational program was delivered to ferry passengers traveling to an endemic area in southeastern Massachusetts. Rates of TBI and precautionary and tick check behaviors were measured over three summers in 30,164 passengers. There were lower rates of TBI among participants receiving TBI education compared with control participants receiving bicycle safety education (relative risk [RR] = 0.79) and a 60% reduction in risk among those receiving TBI educa

Simultaneous control of ticks and tsetse flies in Satiri, Burkina Faso, by the use of flumethrin pour on for cattle.

Treatments of 2000 cattle at monthly intervals with flumethrin pour on (1 mg active ingredient/kg b.w.) resulted in a rapid decrease of African Animal Trypanosomosis (AAT). After an initial curative treatment of the sentinel herd with diminazene aceturate (7 mg/kg b.w.) only positive cases were treated. Three applications of flumethrin were sufficient to reduce the prevalence of AAT to below 5%. Apart from a slight increase at the end of the first year the infection rate varied between 0 and 5%. A tsetse population disappeared from a heavily infested habitat after six treatments. The average t

Enhanced efficacy of carvacrol and thymol in combination with benzalkonium chloride for the control of the cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus.

The control of Rhipicephalus microplus represents a major challenge for livestock production due to the widespread emergence of tick populations resistant to conventional acaricides, highlighting the need for alternative strategies capable of improving control efficacy. Bioactive constituents of essential oils, such as the phenolic monoterpenes carvacrol and thymol, have demonstrated acaricidal activity, although their performance may vary depending on formulation and exposure conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effects of carvacrol and thymol in combination with the cationic surfactan

Ticks and Chlamydia-Related Bacteria in Swiss Zoological Gardens Compared to in Contiguous and Distant Control Areas.

Ticks are vectors of numerous agents of medical importance and may be infected by various Chlamydia-related bacteria, such as members of Parachlamydiaceae and Rhabdochlamydiaceae families, which are sharing the same biphasic life cycle with the pathogenic Chlamydia. However, the veterinary importance of ticks and of their internalized pathogens remains poorly studied. Thus, we wondered (i) whether the prevalence of ticks was higher in zoological gardens than in control areas with similar altitude, vegetation, humidity and temperature, and (ii) whether the presence of Chlamydia-related bacteria
