Ticks and tick-borne diseases on southwestern Indian Ocean islands.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases represent a growing global health concern, affecting both humans and animals, with an increasing number of disease outbreaks reported worldwide. On the southwestern Indian Ocean islands (SWIO)-including the Comoros, Madagascar, Mauritius, La Réunion, Rodrigues and the Seychelles-the diversity of tick species and the pathogens they transmit remain poorly understood, posing a considerable impediment to improving public and animal health. METHODS: Here, we present the first comprehensive summary of tick species diversity and tick-borne pathogens in the SWIO region

Seasonal Dynamics of Ticks and Tick-Borne Pathogens in Republic of Korea.

Tick-borne diseases are a public health problem and a significant burden on the livestock industry. The seasonal abundance of ticks and tick-borne pathogens strongly correlates with the prevalence of these diseases. To investigate the seasonal variation in ticks and tick-borne pathogens, ticks were collected from Gangwon State, Korea, and the tick-borne pathogens Borrelia, Anaplasma, Babesia, and Theileria were examined. In total, 14,748 ticks were collected, comprising ticks from two genera and three species: Haemaphysalis longicornis, Haemaphysalis flava, and Ixodes nipponensis, with H. long

Geographical distribution and pathogenesis of ticks and tick-borne viral diseases.

Ticks are obligatory hematophagous arthropods that harbor and transmit infectious pathogens to humans and animals. Tick species belonging to Amblyomma, Ixodes, Dermacentor, and Hyalomma genera may transmit certain viruses such as Bourbon virus (BRBV), Dhori virus (DHOV), Powassan virus (POWV), Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV), Colorado tick fever virus (CTFV), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), Heartland virus (HRTV), Kyasanur forest disease virus (KFDV), etc. that affect humans and certain wildlife. The tick vectors may become infected through feeding on viraemic hosts before t

Ticks and Tick-Borne Infections of Dogs in Two Jordanian Shelters.

Shelters in Jordan accommodate a huge number of dogs, which are rescued as stray dogs from different cities of the country, but their health receives almost no attention. The aim of this study was to examine tick infestation as well as tick-borne protozoa and bacteria of 80 randomly sampled dogs in two Jordanian shelters. Ticks identified as Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato were found on 14 out of 27 animals in a shelter. No ticks were found on dogs in the other shelter. A total of 42 (52.5% [95% confidence interval: 41.7-63.1]) dogs were infected with one or two pathogens. The DNA of three

Tick-induced allergies: mammalian meat allergy and tick anaphylaxis.

Mammalian meat allergy after tick bites and tick anaphylaxis are the most serious tick-induced allergies. They are often severe, should be largely avoidable and offer fascinating insights into the development and prevention of allergies. Australian clinicians reported the first cases of tick anaphylaxis and discovered the association between tick bites and the development of mammalian meat allergy. The subsequent finding of the allergen epitope within the meat responsible for the allergic reaction, α-gal (galactose-α-1,3-galactose), stimulated further interest in this emergent allergy. Reports

How ticks keep ticking in the adversity of host immune reactions.

Ixodid ticks are acknowledged as one of the most important hematophagous arthropods because of their ability in transmitting a variety of tick-borne diseases. Mathematical models have been developed, based on emerging knowledge about tick ecology, pathogen epidemiology and their interface, to understand tick population dynamics and tick-borne diseases spread patterns. However, no serious effort has been made to model and assess the impact of host immunity triggered by tick feeding on the distribution of the tick population according to tick stages and on tick population extinction and persiste

Transport of ixodid ticks and tick-borne pathogens by migratory birds.

Birds, particularly passerines, can be parasitized by Ixodid ticks, which may be infected with tick-borne pathogens, like Borrelia spp., Babesia spp., Anaplasma, Rickettsia/Coxiella, and tick-borne encephalitis virus. The prevalence of ticks on birds varies over years, season, locality and different bird species. The prevalence of ticks on different species depends mainly on the degree of feeding on the ground. In Europe, the Turdus spp., especially the blackbird, Turdus merula, appears to be most important for harboring ticks. Birds can easily cross barriers, like fences, mountains, glaciers,

[Tick-borne encephalitis virus in humans and ticks in Northeastern Germany].

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) was known to have occurred in humans in the area of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Germany, until 1985. Between 1992 and 2004 more than 16,000 ticks were tested and found to be negative for TBE virus in that area of Germany, wich was therefore thought to be free of TBE. But after 19 years three autochthonous cases of human TBE-infections were identified between 2004 and 2006. We subsequently collected ticks from the three areas where the infection had been acquired and tested them for the presence of TBE-virus RNA with a nested reverse transcription polymerase c

Effects of climate change on ticks and tick-borne diseases in europe.

Zoonotic tick-borne diseases are an increasing health burden in Europe and there is speculation that this is partly due to climate change affecting vector biology and disease transmission. Data on the vector tick Ixodes ricinus suggest that an extension of its northern and altitude range has been accompanied by an increased prevalence of tick-borne encephalitis. Climate change may also be partly responsible for the change in distribution of Dermacentor reticulatus. Increased winter activity of I. ricinus is probably due to warmer winters and a retrospective study suggests that hotter summers w

Introduced ticks and tick-borne diseases: the threat and approaches to eradication.

Exotic tick species and tick-borne diseases are serious threats to live-stock, companion animals, and wildlife in the United States. Recurring introductions of exotic tick species into the United States are a significant indicator of the degree of risk. Successful tick-eradication campaigns, such as the national program that eradicated Boophilus annulatus and B. microplus from the United States, the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program of the US Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services that protects against the re-entry and dissemination of Boophilus ticks from Mexico back into their f

Ticks and tick-borne disease systems in space and from space.

Analyses within geographical information systems (GISs) indicate that small- and large-scale ranges of hard tick species (Ixodidae) are determined more by climate and vegetation than by host-related factors. Spatial distributions of ticks may therefore be analysed by statistical methods that seek correlations between known tick presence/absence and ground- or remotely-sensed (RS) environmental factors. In this way, local habitats of Amblyomma variegatum in the Caribbean and Ixodes ricinus in Europe have been mapped using Landsat RS imagery, while regional and continental distributions of Afric

Survey for tick-borne pathogens in Amazonian ixodid ticks, Brazil.

The Amazon biome harbors an exceptional diversity of wildlife, yet remains understudied regarding tick-borne pathogens. This study investigated the species richness of ixodid ticks and the occurrence of associated microorganisms in three natural areas of the Brazilian Amazon. During 2023-2024, a total of 1084 ticks were collected from vegetation and vertebrate hosts and identified into 16 species, predominantly within the genus Amblyomma. A subset of 289 ticks was subjected to molecular screening for bacteria of the genera Rickettsia, Anaplasma, and Borrelia, as well as protozoa of the order P

Tick-borne encephalitis virus in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks, Poland.

We report the detection of tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) in Dermacentor reticulatus ticks collected in Poland during the 2022 season. Both Ixodes ricinus and D. reticulatus ticks were surveilled. There was limited TBEV detection found in one pool out of 106 pools (418 ticks) that were shotgun genome sequenced. The TBEV positive tick pool consisted of N = 3 adult D. reticulatus ticks. Additional hybrid-capture sequencing of this pool resulted in the first full-length genome sequence of TBEV from this tick species. The assembled genome was classified as the European subtype through phylog

Resistance to Ticks and the Path to Anti-Tick and Transmission Blocking Vaccines.

The medical and veterinary public health importance of ticks and tick-borne pathogens is increasing due to the expansion of the geographic ranges of both ticks and pathogens, increasing tick populations, growing incidence of tick-borne diseases, emerging tick transmitted pathogens, and continued challenges of achieving effective and sustained tick control. The past decades show an increasing interest in the immune-mediated control of tick infestations and pathogen transmission through the use of vaccines. Bovine tick resistance induced by repeated infestations was reported over a century ago.

Cattle ticks and tick-borne diseases: a review of Uganda's situation.

Herein we review the epidemiology of ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs), their impact on livestock health and on the economy, control and associated challenges in Uganda. Ticks are leading vectors of economically important pathogens and are widespread in Uganda due to suitable climatic conditions. Besides the physical injury inflicted on the animal host, ticks transmit a number of pathogens that can cause morbidity and mortality of livestock if untreated, resulting in economic losses. Uganda suffers an aggregated annual loss (direct and indirect) of over USD 1.1 billion in the TTBDs complex

The Impacts of Climate Change on Ticks and Tick-Borne Disease Risk.

Ticks exist on all continents and carry more zoonotic pathogens than any other type of vector. Ticks spend most of their lives in the external environment away from the host and are thus expected to be affected by changes in climate. Most empirical and theoretical studies demonstrate or predict range shifts or increases in ticks and tick-borne diseases, but there can be a lot of heterogeneity in such predictions. Tick-borne disease systems are complex, and determining whether changes are due to climate change or other drivers can be difficult. Modeling studies can help tease apart and understa
