Palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions of organosilanols and their salts: practical alternatives to boron- and tin-based methods.

In the panoply of modern synthetic methods for forming carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bonds, the transition metal-catalyzed cross-coupling of organometallic nucleophiles with organic electrophiles enjoys a preeminent status. The preparative utility of these reactions is, in large measure, a consequence of the wide variety of organometallic donors that have been conscripted into service. The most common of these reagents are organic derivatives of tin, boron, and zinc, which each possess unique advantages and shortcomings. Because of their low cost, low toxicity, and high chemical stabilit

Iron oxide nanozymes stabilize stannous fluoride for targeted biofilm killing and synergistic oral disease prevention.

Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most prevalent human disease caused by oral biofilms, affecting nearly half of the global population despite increased use of fluoride, the mainstay anticaries (tooth-enamel protective) agent. Recently, an FDA-approved iron oxide nanozyme formulation (ferumoxytol, Fer) has been shown to disrupt caries-causing biofilms with high specificity via catalytic activation of hydrogen peroxide, but it is incapable of interfering with enamel acid demineralization. Here, we find notable synergy when Fer is combined with stannous fluoride (SnF 2 ), markedly inhibiting bo

Practical synthesis of N-Boc- and N-Cbz-α-amido stannanes from α-amido sulfones using TMSSnBu3 and CsF.

In the presence of TMSSnBu(3) and CsF, stannylation of N-Boc- and N-Cbz-α-amido sulfones proceeded very well to afford the corresponding α-amido stannanes in moderate-to-high yields. This reaction tolerated α-aryl-, alkenyl-, and alkyl-substituted α-amido sulfones as well as substrates containing either an ester or cyano moiety, which might be reactive with lithium or magnesium stannides employed in conventional stannylation.

Physicochemical properties of commercially available mouthrinses.

This study evaluated physicochemical properties of eight commercially available mouthrinses, namely surface tension, in vivo enamel contact angle, viscosity, penetration coefficient, acidity and buffer capacity. The penetration coefficient, determined by the surface tension, contact angle and viscosity, is a measure of the ability of a liquid to penetrate into a capillary space, such as interproximal regions, gingival pockets and pores. The acidity is often determined by a compromise of the requirements for taste, enamel remineralization and stability of the solution. Among the eight mouthrins

Interindividual differences in acidogenic potential of the salivary microbiome after mouthwash exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride mouthwashes are commonly used for prevention of dental caries. The most common forms of fluoride are stannous fluoride (SnF2), amine fluoride (AmF) and sodium fluoride (NaF), each with differing activities against oral bacteria. Since the microbiome has been linked to interindividual differences in responses to treatment, the phenotype of the microbiome may provide information on potential treatment responses. Flow cytometry successfully tracks microbial phenotypic heterogeneity and may prove useful for capturing interindividual treatment responses. METHODS: We compared t

Recent Development of Active Ingredients in Mouthwashes and Toothpastes for Periodontal Diseases.

Periodontal diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis are primarily caused by dental plaque. Several antiplaque and anti-microbial agents have been successfully incorporated into toothpastes and mouthwashes to control plaque biofilms and to prevent and treat gingivitis and periodontitis. The aim of this article was to review recent developments in the antiplaque, anti-gingivitis, and anti-periodontitis properties of some common compounds in toothpastes and mouthwashes by evaluating basic and clinical studies, especially the ones published in the past five years. The common active ingredients

Current dental chemotherapeutics, Part 2.

Periodontal diseases are the result of bacterial infections. Antimicrobial and other chemotherapeutic agents are effective adjuncts to mechanical therapy in helping practitioners limit the progression of disease. Topical antimicrobials used as mouthrinses can control supragingival plaque. Studies demonstrate that irrigation devices enhance the effectiveness of antimicrobials. Antibiotics have been shown to be of value in treating juvenile periodontitis, and rapidly advancing and refractory periodontitis. The use of tetracyclines to promote healing by stabilizing collagen and the use of nonster
