Treatment of dermatophytoses and pityriasis versicolor with itraconazole.

Thirty patients (18 males and 12 females) with dermatophytoses were treated with itraconazole. Twenty-eight patients received 100 mg per day for 14 days, and two patients, one with tinea pedis and one with tinea manuum, were treated for 28 days. Thirty patients (11 males and 19 females) with pityriasis versicolor were treated with 200 mg of itraconazole. for five days. Half of the patients received the 200 mg in one dose, and the other half received 100 mg twice a day. Twenty-nine of the 30 patients with dermatophytoses were clinically and mycologically cured, and one patient was improved. All

Can pityriasis versicolor be treated with 2% ketoconazole foam?

BACKGROUND: Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor is a superficial fungal infection of the stratum corneum caused by Malassezia species. The diagnosis is made clinically by its classic appearance of round or oval macules with fine scale that may be hyperpigmented or hypopigmented. Diagnosis may also be confirmed with microscopic evaluation of skin scrapings that reveal both short, stubby hyphae, and spores under KOH preparation. Ketoconazole is an important treatment of pityriasis versicolor but is primarily used in cream formulas. A foam vehicle has been shown to improve drug absorption through the s

[Superficial mucocutaneous mycosis].

Superficial mycosis are very common. The frequency in France is 10 to 15% of the population. The reason for the high incidence of this disease is the change of the moral values, rise in promiscuity and increase sports activities. The agents responsible are divided in four groups. Dermatophytes involve keratin of the skin, hairs and nails but never the mucous membranes. They can cause glabrous skin lesion, tinea corporis, tinea capitis or onychomycosis. Yeast are divided in two groups: the candidiasis and Malassezia furfur, the etiologic agent of pityriasis versicolor. Oral mucosa candidiasis i

Fungal infection as a cause of skin disease in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia: prevailing fungi and pattern of infection.

A total of 4,294 clinically suspected cases of dermatomycoses belonging to 26 different nationalities were examined between April 1984 and April 1988. Fungi were demonstrated in routine potassium hydroxide/dimethyl sulfoxide mount in 3,814 cases (88.8%) and the etiology was determined by culture in 2,458 cases (57.2%). Tinea versicolor was the predominant fungal infection (30.9% of all infections). Onychomycosis and paronychia ranked second in prevalence (16.8%). Candidal onychomycosis was the most common type of infection. Scalp ringworm among children ranked third (15.3%), Microsporum canis

Tinea InVersicolor: A Rare Distribution of a Common Eruption.

Tinea versicolor (TV), or pityriasis versicolor, is one of the most commonly occurring superficial mycoses. Typically, this condition is characterized by fine scaly hyper or hypopigmented macules and patches distributed on the trunk and upper extremities. Diagnosis is often based on clinical presentation. A Wood's lamp examination or potassium hydroxide (KOH) preparation test is performed for confirmation. To date, numerous morphologic variants of this condition have been described. Here we present an inverse papular variant that, to our knowledge, has only been previously reported once. This

[How I explore...skin by photodiagnosis using skin fluorescence and its functional imaging].

Under specific light illumination, skin produces peculiar fluorescent aspects. Such property can be used to provide diagnostic arguments or to disclose some peculiar functions of the skin. Some superficial infections (erythrasma, tinea versicolor, dermatophytic tinea,..) reveal fluorescence that may be intense. The pilosebaceous follicles enriched in Propionibacterium spp show fluorescence. Such property is lost during some anti-acne treatments. A quenching effect is observed after application of sunscreens. The (pre)neoplastic areas prepared for dynamic phototherapy become fluorescent. Pyrani

Dermatologic Problems Commonly Seen by the Allergist/Immunologist.

Allergists/immunologists see a variety of skin disorders, some of which have a known immunologic basis whereas others do not. We review the prevalence, etiology, clinical presentation, and effective and low-cost care of common dermatologic conditions seen in outpatient practices. Conditions discussed include pityriasis alba, seborrheic dermatitis, rosacea, acne, tinea infections, intertrigo, lichen planus, tinea versicolor, lichen simplex chronicus, scabies, pityriasis rosea, keratosis pilaris, and seborrheic keratosis. Fungal infections and parasitic infestations in sports: expedient identification and treatment.

Common fungal infections include tinea corporis, capitis, cruris, versicolor, and pedis, as well as onychomycosis. Prevention of spread is important and involves frequent skin surveillance, avoidance of shared equipment, and regular equipment cleaning. The NCAA recommends treatment of tinea corporis and capitis infections and covering any exposed infection before return to play. Parasitic infestations occur because of the close physical contact of team members and athletes in contact sports. Both scabies and pediculosis should be treated before return to play, according to NCAA guidelines. Cut

[Oral Antifungal Drugs in the Treatment of Dermatomycosis].

Oral antifungal drugs are used primarily to treat tinea unguium; however, they are also useful for other types of tinea. For example, a combination of topical and oral antifungal drugs is effective in hyperkeratotic tinea pedis that is unresponsive to topical monotherapy. In cases of tinea facialis adjacent to the eyes, ears, or mouth, or widespread tinea corporis, or tinea cruris involving the complex skin folds of the external genitalia, it is difficult to apply topical drugs to all the lesions; therefore, oral antifungal drugs are necessary. Oral antifungal drugs are also useful not only fo

Superficial fungal infections.

Superficial fungal infections are problems frequently encountered by the pediatrician. Presentation can be quite varied as causative organisms, environment, patient characteristics and secondary infections can significantly alter the clinical picture. A brief review of these common infections with an approach to examination and diagnosis is presented, as well as updated treatment recommendations.

Clinical evaluation of clotrimazole. A broad-spectrum antifungal agent.

The efficacy and safety of the broad-spectrum, topically applied antifungal agent clotrimazole were evaluated in two double-blind, multicentric trials. Ten investigators reported on a total of 1,361 cases in which a 1% solution or a 1% cream formulation was compared with its respective vehicle. Clotrimazole was therapeutically effective, as confirmed by mycological cure (negative microscopy and culture) and clinical improvement, in tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea corporis, pityriasis versicolor, and cutaneous candidasis. Furthermore, species identification established the efficacy of clotrima

Malassezia yeasts and pityriasis versicolor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To analyze the relationships among different Malassezia species and pityriasis versicolor, the only human disease in which the etiologic role of these fungi is fully accepted (although the species implicated remains a matter of discussion). RECENT FINDINGS: Since 1996, after the taxonomic revision of the genus, a limited number of papers analyzing the role of the different Malassezia species in pityriasis versicolor have been published or were the subject of presentations in congresses; there were only four in the past year. This paper discusses the results of these works,

Management of seborrheic dermatitis and pityriasis versicolor.

Pityriasis (tinea) versicolor and seborrheic dermatitis are two very common skin diseases. Pityriasis versicolor is a chronic superficial fungal disease usually located on the upper trunk, neck, or upper arms. In pityriasis versicolor, the lipophilic yeast Malassezia (also know as Pityrosporum ovale or P. orbiculare) changes from the blastospore form to the mycelial form under the influence of predisposing factors. The most important exogenous factors are high temperatures and a high relative humidity which probably explain why pityriasis versicolor is more common in the tropics. The most impo
