Patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS) undergoing surgery are at high risk of developing peritoneal adhesions and other severe postoperative complications. However, the single shielding function and absence of physiological activity render conventional methods less useful in preventing adhesions in patients with MetS. To address this challenge, a convenient method is introduced for developing a novel tissue-adhesive hydrogel called oxidized dextran-metformin (ODE-ME) via Schiff base linkages. This injectable ODE-ME hydrogel exhibits excellent tissue-adhesive properties and various physiologic

BACKGROUND: Tissue adhesive, adhesive tape, and sutures are used to close surgical incisions. However, it is unclear which produces the best results in children, and whether combination wound closure is better than sutures alone.
METHODS: In this parallel randomised controlled trial (ANZCTR: ACTRN12617000158369), children (aged 18 years or less) undergoing elective general surgical or urological procedures were randomized to skin closure with sutures alone, sutures and adhesive tape, or sutures and tissue adhesive. Participants were assessed 2 weeks, 6 weeks, and more than 6 months after oper

The Janus adhesive wound dressings exhibit properties analogous to human skin. Specifically, they must possess both adhesive and non-adhesive characteristics to function effectively. The adhesive property ensures secure attachment to the wound site, while the non-adhesive side acts as a protective barrier against external contaminants. In this study, we have developed an integrated Janus antibacterial hydrogel that features a rapid photoresponsive adhesive layer alongside a robust anti-adhesive layer. The anti-adhesion layer hydrogel, referred to as PPAL, exhibits a maximum tensile fracture st

BACKGROUND: Colorectal anastomoses created in a contaminated environment result in a high leakage rate. This study investigated whether using anastomotic sealants (TissuCol(®), Histoacryl(®) Flex, and Duraseal(®)) prevents leakage in a rat peritonitis model.
STUDY DESIGN: Sixty-seven Wistar rats were divided into control and experimental groups (TissuCol, Histoacryl, and Duraseal groups). Peritonitis was induced 1 day before surgery with the cecal ligation puncture model. On day 0, colonic anastomosis was constructed with sutures and then sealed with no adhesive (control group) or one select

Interfaces for soft bioelectronics must retain conformal and low-noise contact with dynamic and hydrated tissues without causing mechanical mismatches. This study integrates a viscoelastic, self-healing polymer (SHP) with a surface-embedded carbon nanotube (CNT) network and a catechol-modified alginate (Alg-CA) overlayer to enable wet adhesion while preserving polymer-like mechanical properties. Tensile tests across representative strain rates (3.3 and 50% s-1) indicate that CNT-SHP exhibits a stress-strain response similar to that of pristine SHP. Fracture-energy analysis and rapid stress rel

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) frequently results from traumatic incidents and can lead to severe functional disabilities. Hydrogels have been widely employed for VML tissue regeneration, which are unfortunately ineffective because of the lack of intimate contact with injured tissue for structural and mechanical support. Adhesive hydrogels allow for strong tissue connections for wound closure. Nevertheless, conventional adhesive hydrogels exhibit poor tissue adhesion in moist, bleeding wounds due to the hydration layer at the tissue-hydrogel interfaces, resulting in insufficient performance. In

Designing adhesive hydrogels with optimal properties for the treatment of injured tissues is challenging due to the tradeoff between material stiffness and toughness while maintaining adherence to wet tissue surfaces. In most cases, bioadhesives with improved mechanical strength often lack an appropriate elastic compliance, hindering their application for sealing soft, elastic, and dynamic tissues. Here, we present a novel strategy for engineering tissue adhesives in which molecular building blocks are manipulated to allow for precise control and optimization of the various aforementioned prop

Here, a multifunctional film (MFF) as an alternative tissue adhesive in the form of an interpenetrating network consisting of self-crosslinked aldehyde-functionalized chitosan (AC) and crosslinked poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) further coordinated with Ag+ is reported. The MFF combines enhanced toughness and stretchability, which is attributed to the synergistic effects of the double-network design. Covalent crosslinking maintains the overall integrity of the MFF matrix, while noncovalent crosslinking dissipates energy under deformation. Upon contact, the MFF quickly dries the tissue surface followe

Intrauterine adhesion (IUA) is a common gynaecological disease that develops from infection or trauma. IUA disease may seriously affect the physical and mental health of women of childbearing age, which may lead to symptoms such as hypomenorrhea or infertility. Presently, hysteroscopic transcervical resection of adhesion (TCRA) is the principal therapy for IUAs, although its function in preventing the recurrence of adhesion and preserving fertility is limited. Pharmaceuticals such as hormones and vasoactive agents and the placement of nondegradable stents are the most common postoperative adju

Tissue adhesives are commonly used for skin closure in both surgical and nonsurgical specialties. Although they are very well tolerated, tissue adhesives can induce a localized allergic response in 0.5% to 14% of patients. Allergic response can result in wound dehiscence, patient discomfort, increased healing time, and suboptimal esthetic results. We present two cases of allergic reaction to anterior neck incisions following topical application of tissue adhesives. The patients were managed with local wound care, steroid administration, and one with subsequent revision surgery. Clinicians who

BACKGROUND: Postoperative peritoneal adhesion formation following abdominal surgery remains a relevant surgical problem. The application of soluble physico-chemical barriers like 4% icodextrin is one approach to protect the peritoneal surface from getting linked to adhesive scar. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of 4% icodextrin on peritoneal tissue response both of visceral and parietal peritoneum, adhesion formation and wound healing.
METHODS: 40 rats were divided into two groups. After creation of an intraabdominal defect, either 4% icodextrin (Adept®) or sodium chlor

We developed a chondroitin sulfate-polyethylene glycol (CS-PEG) adhesive hydrogel with numerous potential biomedical applications. The carboxyl groups on chondroitin sulfate (CS) chains were functionalized with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) to yield chondroitin sulfate succinimidyl succinate (CS-NHS). Following purification, the CS-NHS molecule can react with primary amines to form amide bonds. Hence, using six arm polyethylene glycol amine PEG-(NH2)6 as a crosslinker we formed a hydrogel which was covalently bound to proteins in tissue via amide bonds. By varying the initial pH of the precursor
