Heart valve replacement in pediatric cardiothoracic surgery poses problems because conventional heart valve implants do not have the ability to grow. This mandates serial reoperations for implant exchanges until an adult-size implant can fit. Partial heart transplantation eliminates these reoperations because the transplanted valves grow. However, partial heart transplantation competes with heart transplantation for a limited supply of donor hearts. This is a critical barrier to the progress of the field. Domino partial heart transplantation is a new surgical technique that overcomes this barr

Recently England and Netherlands have changed their consent system from Opt In to Opt Out. The reflections shared in this paper give insight and may be helpful for other nation considering likewise. Strong support in England for the change in legislation led to Opt Out being introduced without requiring a vote in parliament in 2019. In Netherlands the bill passed by the smallest possible majority in 2018. Both countries implemented a public campaign to raise awareness. In England registration on the Donor Register is voluntary. Registration was required in Netherlands for all residents 18 year

PURPOSE: Globally, an estimated 12.7 million people await a corneal transplant. Of these, 53% are without routine access to a domestic supply and are reliant on transnational activity (TNA) (importation) of corneal tissue (CT) for transplantation. Although CT TNA commenced in 1961, there has been no evaluation of its impact on import and export nations.
METHODS: We wished to examine the impact of clinical and nonclinical CT TNA on export and import nations, with nonclinical aspects our primary focus, to help guide future practice. We conducted a review of the academic literature through vario

The extent to which donor multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) affect organ utilization remains unclear. We performed a retrospective cohort study at 4 transplant centers between 2015 and 2016 to evaluate this question. All deceased donors who donated at least one organ were included. Exposed donors had at least one MDRO on culture. Unexposed donors had no MDRO-positive cultures. Only cultures obtained during the donor's terminal hospitalization were evaluated. Multivariable regression was used to determine the association between donor MDRO and (1) number of organs transplanted per donor and

In this article we outline and defend the concept of voluntary non-directed postmortem sperm donation. This approach offers a potential means of increasing the quantity and heterogeneity of donor sperm. This is pertinent given the present context of a donor sperm shortage in the UK. Beyond making the case that it is technically feasible for dead men to donate their sperm for use in reproduction, we argue that this is ethically permissible. The inability to access donor sperm and the suffering this causes, we argue, justifies allowing access to sperm donated after death. Moreover, it is known t

Studies about the psychosocial issues concerning organ donation and transplantation tend to focus on the experiences of donor or recipient families. Little is known about the part played by correspondence exchanged between these two groups; in particular how they perceive the agency of organ donation. This is the first analysis to address the representation of the act of donation from the viewpoint of both donor and recipient families through interrogation of archived correspondence data, using linguistic techniques. The data was drawn from a collection of letters, from four USA organ procurem

A worldwide shortage of donor organs has led to the development of national and international systems for organ procurement and allocation. Such systems promote organ donation and ensure fair distribution of available donor organs through a combination of legislation, organ exchange organizations (OEOs), transplant coordinators, publicity campaigns, donor cards, and professional training programs. The development of national and international OEOs is central to this process because they maintain waiting lists and allocate organs in the most appropriate way. Most countries also employ transplan

Organ transplantation is the most effective treatment for end stage organ failure, and voluntary donation after citizen's death is the only source of transplanted organ in China.Clinically, transplantation organ protection technology plays a critical role in improving the quality of transplantation organs and the prognosis of recipients. On the basis of domestic and worldwide basic research and clinical practice and according to the Oxford evidence classification and GRADE system, the experts organized by Organ Transplantation Doctor Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association,Organ Transplantati

Most health professionals are aware of the criteria that need to be met to secure organ donation. Bone and soft tissue procurement is another issue, however. Even though allografts have been used since the 1880s, new techniques and an increase in the possible uses for allografts have recently increased the demand for bone and soft tissue. The criteria for choosing a bone donor is similar to organ donors with one major exception. A bone and soft tissue donor does not need the special circumstances of brain death.

This enquiry examines problems which haunt the 'heart' and its donation. It begins by examining the heart's enduring significance for culturally mediated self-understanding, its vulnerability to misunderstanding and abuse and its relevance to challenging the determination of death by neurological criteria. Despite turns to brain-centred self-conceptions, the heart remains haunted by the hybrid experiences of identity accompanying organ transplant, the relational significance attached to dead hearts witnessed in the Alder Hey scandal and claims that heart transplants commonly constitute the leg

In the UK, three patients die every day waiting for an organ transplant. Despite there being 18.7 million donors currently registered in the UK, donation rates remain low. This review discusses the legal, ethical and social aspects of organ donation in the UK, and looks at some controversial solutions adopted in other countries.

France has reached a pretty good level of activity, comparable to southern European countries: in 2011, 4945 transplantations (TX) have been performed among them, 2976 (60%) kidney TX, 1164 (24%) liver TX, 398 (8%) heart TX and 312 (6.3%) lung TX. However, the progression has slowed down since 2008 like in many countries. The potential of donors is mainly represented by the donor after brain-death (DBD) (90%), living donor (LD) for kidneys transplantation participates for only 10% of the overall kidney TX, and donor after cardiac death (DCD) activity, just started in 2006, for 2.2%. The Internet serves as a meeting place where people in need of kidney transplants can find strangers willing to donate. While Good Samaritan donors located via the Internet increase the number of kidneys available for transplantation, they also raise ethical issues. This practice alters the pattern for distributing kidneys from unrelated living donors and raises questions of justice in the allocation of organs. It is unclear if commercial forces are at play in the arrangements made between potential donors and recipients via the Internet. While it is unfair that some recipients do not have sui
