Examination of Tobacco-Related Messaging and Tobacco Use over Time among U.S. Military Young Adults.

Background: People from minoritized populations have historically been targeted by tobacco companies. Little is known about exposure to tobacco-related messages among military personnel from disadvantaged backgrounds. Objectives: The current study aimed to examine exposure to tobacco-related messaging across many nicotine products and through a variety of mediums (i.e., family, friends, advertisements, event promotions, social media) among diverse military populations and use one year later in a sample of young adults who recently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Methods: In this study, 8,901 U

Push or be punished: tobacco industry documents reveal aggression against businesses that discourage tobacco use.

OBJECTIVE: To learn how the tobacco industry reacted to businesses' voluntarily enacting policies to discourage tobacco use and minimise exposure of employees and patrons to secondhand smoke. DATA SOURCES: Internal tobacco industry documents discovered among those posted on the internet. Approximately 24 million documents have been posted as of this writing. Information in this article was culled from among these documents, which have been made public as a unique requirement of the state of Minnesota's settlement with the industry. STUDY SELECTION: Those documents were used that offered insi

Rates and correlates of simultaneous use and mixing of alcohol, tobacco, and cannabis among adults who currently use alcohol and tobacco.

BACKGROUND: Little research exists on simultaneous use of multiple substances that pose additive risk for negative health outcomes. We examine rates and sociodemographic and state cannabis legalization status correlates of simultaneous use (i.e., use > 1 substance on the same occasion) and mixing (e.g., co-administration of substances) of tobacco, alcohol, and cannabis among a U.S sample of adults who currently use alcohol and combustible tobacco products. METHODS: Using a survey panel, we recruited 1,300 U.S. adults who reported past 30-day use of alcohol and combustible tobacco between June

Awareness and use of tobacco products among underage individuals: findings from the altria client services underage tobacco use survey 2020-2022.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use among underage individuals is a public health concern. Timely data about tobacco products, especially emerging products such as novel oral nicotine products (NPs), can provide critical information for the prevention of underage tobacco use. With a recent federal law raising the legal age of purchase of tobacco products from 18 to 21, it is of interest to benchmark awareness and use of tobacco products in the new underage population, young adults 18-20 years old. This study provides estimates on awareness and use of tobacco products among underage individuals 13-20 years

Time buffers teasing and lessens tobacco use: The moderating role of time perspective on bullying victimization and tobacco use in adolescents.

Bullying victimization is a prevalent and harmful experience for adolescents and is positively associated with risky behaviors, including tobacco use. We investigated a potential moderator for the associations between bullying victimization and tobacco use, namely time perspective, which refers to thoughts about time. Bullied adolescents may focus on past events more than present or future events, which could lead to less adaptive coping mechanisms in response to stress, such as tobacco use. Multiple time perspective dimensions and time periods (past, present, and future) were examined. Time o

Central Australian Aboriginal women's pregnancy, labour and birth outcomes following maternal smokeless tobacco (pituri) use, cigarette use or no-tobacco use: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Outcomes related to maternal smoked tobacco (cigarette) use have been substantially examined over the past 50 years with resultant public health education targeted towards the reduction of use during pregnancy. However, worldwide the effects of maternal smokeless tobacco use have been less well explored and in Australia, there has been no examination of maternal outcomes in relation to the use of Australian Nicotiana spp. (tobacco plant) as a smokeless tobacco, colloquially known as pituri. The aim of this study is to describe the maternal outcomes of a group of central Australian

Efficacy of a Brief Tobacco Intervention for Tobacco and Nicotine Containing Product Use in the US Air Force.

INTRODUCTION: While effective Brief Tobacco Interventions (BTIs) are available for cigarette smoking and smokeless tobacco, given the changing prevalence of tobacco and nicotine containing products (TNCPs), there is a need for interventions targeting a broader range of TNCPs (eg, cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and hookah). The purpose of the current investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of a BTI, a 40-minute intervention designed to intervene on four TNCPs in a sample of US military personnel during an 11-week period of involuntary tobacco abstinence, for reducing i

How is Tobacco Use Addressed at US Substance Use Disorder Treatment Facilities? The Importance of Financial Support for Tobacco Cessation Treatment.

Persons in substance use disorders (SUD) treatment report a high prevalence of tobacco use. Often neglected in SUD treatment, some recent state-level policies mandated screening and offering tobacco use treatment or referral. We interviewed 85 providers from 68 SUD treatment facilities across 20 US states, assessed providers' estimates of tobacco use prevalence in their facilities, their perceptions on types of nicotine-containing products used by their service users, tobacco policies that were implemented at their facilities, and whether treatment (counseling or pharmacologic treatment) was o

mHealth app-based ecological momentary assessment to ascertain tobacco retail outlet exposure, tobacco marketing, tobacco use, and susceptibility among rural youth.

BACKGROUND: Rising use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and tobacco products among rural youth challenges tobacco control efforts, with higher use rates compared to urban youth. Exposure to tobacco retail outlets (TROs) and marketing influences tobacco use, but the longitudinal pathways of these factors in rural youth are underexplored. PURPOSE: This study examines the feasibility of app-based ecological momentary assessment (EMA) in capturing real-time exposure to TROs and tobacco marketing and its link to tobacco use and susceptibility among rural youth. METHODS: Participants

Cigarettes, heated tobacco products and dual use: exhaled carbon monoxide, saliva cotinine and total tobacco consumed by Hong Kong tobacco users.

BACKGROUND: Independent studies on exhaled carbon monoxide (CO) and saliva cotinine levels in regular heated tobacco product (HTP) users, and how they compare with conventional cigarette (CC) smokers, are lacking. METHODS: A total of 3294 current users of CCs, HTPs or electronic cigarettes (ECs) from a household survey and a smoking hotspot survey were classified into seven groups: exclusive users of CCs, HTPs, ECs; dual users of CCs and HTPs, CCs and ECs, HTPs and ECs; and triple users. We measured exhaled CO level using the piCo Smokerlyzer (n=780) and saliva cotinine using NicAlert cotinin

Tobacco quitline engagement and outcomes among primary care patients reporting use of tobacco or dual tobacco and cannabis: An observational study.

Background: Dual use of tobacco and cannabis is increasingly common, but it is unclear how it impacts individuals' interest in or ability to stop smoking. If dual users fail to engage in treatment or have worse treatment outcomes, it would suggest that tobacco treatment programs may need to be tailored to the specific needs of those using cannabis and tobacco. Methods: We conducted an observational study using electronic treatment records from adults (18 years and older) who (a) were enrolled in a regional healthcare system in Washington state, (b) sought tobacco cessation treatment through an

Effects of Exposure to Tobacco and Electronic Cigarette Advertisements on Tobacco Use: An Analysis of the 2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey.

PURPOSE: Tobacco advertising influences youth smoking behavior. Electronic cigarette (E-cigarette) advertising appears to encourage e-cigarette use among youth. Our aim was to explore the combined effect of exposure to both traditional tobacco advertising and e-cigarette advertising on youth's current use of traditional tobacco products and e-cigarettes. METHODS: Data were obtained from the 2015 National Youth Tobacco Survey (N = 17,711) in the U.S. Three levels of advertising exposure were assessed: none, traditional tobacco-only advertisements, and traditional tobacco and e-cigarette advert

Gambling, tobacco use, and health among individuals in substance use disorder treatment.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gambling is highly comorbid with disordered use of tobacco and other drugs, and may increase relapse risk among substance use disorder (SUD) patients. We investigated associations between gambling and tobacco use behaviors among SUD patients to inform clinical care. METHODS: Patients (N = 651, 170 female) from 25 residential SUD treatment programs in California completed surveys about tobacco use, health, and gambling. Using multivariate regression, we examined associations between gambling, tobacco use behaviors, and mental and physical health. RESULTS: Past-year

Sequential and simultaneous treatment approaches to cannabis use disorder and tobacco use.

Tobacco smoking among those seeking treatment for cannabis use disorder (CUD) is common and is a negative predictor of cannabis outcomes. Quitting tobacco may be beneficial for those seeking to quit cannabis use. This initial proof of concept, controlled trial was designed to compare a simultaneous versus sequential tobacco intervention among those seeking treatment for CUD. Sixty-seven adults received either a simultaneous (SIM) or sequential (SEQ) approach to tobacco cessation in the context of outpatient treatment for CUD. A tobacco intervention (TI) that combined web-based counseling with
