A second deciduous molar impacted in right maxillary sinus: a long-term follow-up.

Primary tooth impaction is quite rare during the development of primary dentition. Various factors contribute to the impaction of a deciduous tooth, including malposition and malformation of the tooth bud, dentomaxillofacial disharmony, tumors, and cysts. This case was a 6-year-old female with complete left cleft lip/palate. A maxillary right second deciduous molar impacting at a high level approximate to the maxillary sinus was noted on the initial visit. To prevent surgical trauma to the surrounding tissue and succedaneous teeth, regular follow-up with radiographic examination was taken ever

The influence of gestational age and birth weight of the newborn on tooth eruption.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare the beginning of eruption of the first deciduous tooth in preterm infants (<38 weeks) with full-term infants (38 and 42 weeks) of normal birth weight ((3)2.500g), low birth weight (< 2.500g) and very low birth weight (<1.500g), in order to evaluate if premature birth and low birth weight would affect tooth eruption. METHODS: The neonatal records and the moment of eruption of the first deciduous tooth of 146 infants - 77 preterm infants and 69 full-term infants, ranging from 5 to 36 months old, of both genders - were recorded. All of them

Management of an avulsed deciduous incisor. Report of a case.

The avulsed primary tooth poses problems in its treatment and management. This case report on the long-term management of an avulsed deciduous incisor produced some diagnostic findings. Reattachment of the periodontal fibers occurred after 2 weeks of splinting. The normal eruption pattern was not delayed and secondary spacing occurred. Turner's hypoplasia occurred on the succedaneous tooth, but it was minimal. Replantation of avulsed deciduous teeth should be considered as a treatment modality under ideal conditions.

Development of Yorkshire Terrier Dentition.

The development of dentition in dogs has been associated with several problems including tooth over-crowding, missing permanent dentition, and persistent deciduous teeth (PDT). Information on dentition development in different breeds is lacking. This study of 61 Yorkshire terriers aimed to determine the (i) average age at deciduous tooth exfoliation, (ii) average age at permanent tooth eruption, (iii) PDT incidence, and influencing factors such as body weight. The ages of exfoliation of deciduous teeth and eruption of permanent dentition were influenced by body weight and tooth type. These den

Formation of anterior maxillary teeth in 0-3-year-old children with cleft lip and palate and prenatal risk factors for delayed development.

Formation of deciduous and permanent maxillary incisors and canines was studied in 361 children with cleft lip and palate. Altogether, 704 occlusal X rays of the children aged from 2 weeks to 41 months were assessed using a 13-stage scale. The early timing of tooth development was in both dentitions close to that reported for healthy children. However, developmental asymmetry was noted between contralateral teeth on the cleft and noncleft sides. In the unilateral cleft lip and palate group, every tenth cleft-side deciduous central incisor, deciduous canine, and permanent central incisor was de

Additional human remains from Blombos Cave, South Africa: (1999-2000 excavations).

The uppermost Middle Stone Age (MSA) layers at Blombos Cave contain high densities of Still Bay bifacial points. Information from other regional sites places the Still Bay prior to the Howiesons Poort industry, which has been dated at 65-70 ka. The Blombos Cave MSA strata have yielded nine human teeth or dental fragments. Four that were recovered during the 1997-1998 excavations have been published elsewhere. The remaining five were discovered during the 1999-2000 field seasons; these are described here. Three of the new specimens are deciduous teeth, and two are permanent premolar and molar c

Development of deciduous and permanent dentition in Tarsius and its phylogenetic significance.

The earliest stages of development and differentiation of deciduous and permanent teeth were studied in prenatal and perinatal tarsiers. Both deciduous and successional teeth develop at loci for I1, I2, C, P2-4. Relationships among the dental lamina, enamel organs, and successional lamina were used to determine tooth homologies. During the second half of prenatal life, dP2 and dI2 undergo abnormal development. Their dentin becomes fragmented, and these teeth are shed or resorbed without eruption during the perinatal period. Our study provides evidence of an intermediate phase in evolutionary t

Closed Extraction of Deciduous Canine Teeth Required Less Surgical Time Without Increased Complication Rate Compared to an Open Technique in Dogs and Cats.

The study was performed to compare surgical time and potential complications for closed versus open extraction technique of deciduous canine teeth in dogs and cats. The authors hypothesize that closed extractions can be accomplished with less time and surgical trauma without increasing the incidence of postoperative complications than open extractions of deciduous canine teeth. A search of electronic medical records identified 305 deciduous canine tooth extractions from June 1, 2019, to December 31, 2022, at a multi-location veterinary dental referral practice. Comparison groups included 237 c

Preservation of Involved Teeth Associated with Large Dentigerous Cysts.

Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are benign odontogenic cysts that are associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. The purpose of this study is to describe the management of DCs in four children. Four boys aged between 7 and 9 years were referred to our clinics with the complaints of intraoral alveolar swelling or facial asymmetry on the affected area. The panoramic radiographies showed large, well-defined radiolucent lesions associated with the deciduous teeth and displaced tooth buds. The treatment consisted of the extraction of the involved deciduous tooth and marsupialization of the cyst to allo

[Dysostosis cleidocranialis--a case report].

An 18-year female patient with dysostosis cleidocranialis, treated for dental anomalies characteristic of her basic disease since the age of 12, is described. Delayed resorption of deciduous teeth and eruption of permanent teeth were recorded. At the age of 12, the patient had still had all deciduous teeth, with the exception of lower incisors and right upper mesial incisor. The presence of 11 succedaneous teeth, 7 in the maxilla and 4 in the mandible, had been recorded by X-ray. The treatment performed step by step is presented. Firstly, deciduous teeth were extracted, and a prosthesis for bo

Development and size of the teeth of Macaca mulatta.

A cross-sectional sample of 151 skulls from Macaca mulatta of known age and similar rearing in U.S. Primate Centers was analyzed to determine age-related "norms" of stages of development and size of teeth. The stages of development from the follicle of a deciduous incisor in the fetus to completion of the root with apex closed of the permanent third molar were related to age. The age range observed for eruption of each tooth was noted and related to its stage of development. The crown of each erupted tooth was found to be completely developed, but growth of its root continued for a longer, ind

Large-Scale Survey of Missing Deciduous Anterior Teeth on Medical Examination at the Age of 3.5 Years.

Tooth anomalies in childhood may negatively affect the healthy development of the dentition and occlusion; hence, it is important to examine the actual oral condition at an early stage. The present study was performed to understand the state of missing deciduous anterior teeth in children aged 3.5 years who underwent dental checkups in Matsubara City. In total, 3508 children received oral examinations, and items such as erupted deciduous teeth and teeth anomalies were recorded. Among these children, those with missing anterior deciduous teeth were selected, and their details were analyzed. In

The autotransplantation and orthodontic treatment of multiple congenitally missing and impacted teeth.

Congenitally missing teeth are one of the most common dental anomalies. When permanent teeth are absent, various problems can occur It is important to consider the facial profile, position of the incisor teeth, skeletal and dental development, and available dental space before planning treatment. Possible treatment methods include preserving and retaining the deciduous tooth, replacing the missing tooth with prosthesis, placing an implant, or performing a transplant after extracting the deciduous tooth. Among these possibilities, autotransplantation combined with orthodontic treatment corrects

Morphologic and gene expression analysis of periodontal ligament fibroblasts subjected to pressure.

INTRODUCTION: Force application (FA) during orthodontic tooth movement is mediated through periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts. FA on deciduous teeth has an inherent risk of root resorption, which is less in permanent teeth. Currently, the root resorption mechanism is poorly understood. We hypothesized that FA alters the morphology and gene expression of PDL fibroblasts. This study was designed to achieve homogenous PDL fibroblast cultures, establish an in-vitro FA model, analyze fibroblast morphology after FA, and compare the gene expressions of PDL fibroblasts of deciduous and permanent t

Dental trauma in primary dentition, its effect on permanent successors and on Oral Health-Related Quality of Life: a 4-year follow-up case report.

Traumatic dental injury (TDI) in deciduous teeth can affect itself and subsequent dentition due to its close anatomical relationship with the permanent germ. Besides, it can have psychologically undesirable effects on children and their parents and impact their Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). In this case report, we aimed to describe a TDI in primary dentition that presented sequel on primary and on permanent dentition as well to describe the impact on OHRQoL after 4 years of follow-up. A 4-year-old boy was referred to the Dental Trauma Care Program (DTCP) six months after an acc

Chronology and sequence of emergence of permanent premolar teeth in the horse: study of deciduous premolar 'cap' removal in Thoroughbred racehorses.

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: There are few published data to support the ages of emergence of permanent dentition widely reported in horses. OBJECTIVES: To clarify the chronology and sequence of permanent premolar (PM) tooth emergence in Thoroughbred racehorses. METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken in which records were kept of deciduous PM 'cap' extractions performed during routine dental examinations in Thoroughbred racehorses. Mixed effects multiple regression analysis was used to relate the observed ages, measured in days, for PM 'cap' extractions simultaneously with different pr

An unusual case of compound odontome associated with maxillary impacted central incisor.

Odontomas are the most common type of odontogenic tumor occurring within the jaws and are frequently associated with the retained deciduous teeth interfering with the eruption of permanent teeth. Compound odontomas are usually diagnosed in the anterior portion of the jaws and resemble tooth-like structure. These are usually asymptomatic. Complex odontomas are normally diagnosed in the posterior part of the jaws and consist of a disorganized mass with no morphologic resemblance to a tooth. The present case report of a 16-year-old female is a typical case of compound odontoma in the maxillary an

[Effects of fluoride in drinking water on health of deciduous teeth].

INTRODUCTION: High incidence of decayed deciduous teeth, as well as lack of adequate therapy, makes tooth decay prevention very important. One of the simplest ways to reduce tooth decay is fluoridation of drinking water. The optimal concentration of fluoride in drinking water is 1 ppm/l, and many waters naturally contain this quantity. Waters in Vojvodina are mainly poor in fluoride, except in a few regions. It has long been postulated that fluoride has a prophyilactic effect during intrauterine life. Today a theory of greater local impact of fluoride has been accepted, as well as its role in

Bilirubin reversibly affects cell death and odontogenic capacity in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperbilirubinemia in patients with biliary atresia causes deciduous tooth injuries such as green pigmentation and dentin hypoplasia. In patients with biliary atresia who received liver transplantation, tooth structure appears to be recovered radiographically. Nevertheless, little is known about cellular mechanisms underlying bilirubin-induced damage and suppression of deciduous tooth formation. In this study, we examined the effects of bilirubin in stem cells from human exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED) in vitro. MATERIALS AND METHODS: SHED were cultured under exposure to excess o

Anomalous maxillary lateral incisor--the only product of dental lamina, difficult classifiable in the time. Symptom of hypodontia syndrome non-described until present time.

The authors described anomalous development of maxillary lateral incisor non-yet published in stomatologic literature. Diagnostics and clinical findings of the anomaly and the prognosis of the affected tooth they based on the description of six longitudinal observed patients. The principal symptom of the anomaly is the disturbance of time-plan of the tooth development. Terms of the tooth mineralization, the time of eruption and root completion cannot be included either in deciduous or in permanent dentition. The tooth is the only product of the dental lamina; it has no predecessor or successor
