Supernumerary teeth in Indian children: a survey of 300 cases.

The aim of this investigation was to study children with supernumerary teeth who visited the Department of Pedodontics and Preventive Dentistry, Government Dental College and Hospital, Rohtak, Haryana, India. Only children with supernumerary teeth were included in the study while patients having supernumerary teeth with associated syndromes were excluded. Supernumeraries were detected by clinical and radiographic examination. The results indicated that males were affected more than females with a sex ratio of 2.9 : 1. Single supernumerary tooth was seen in 79% of the patients, 20% had double,

Simultaneous presence of a congenitally missing premolar and supernumerary incisor in the same jaw: report of case.

Supernumerary teeth and hypodontia can be regarded as opposite developmental phenomena. An eight-year-old girl presented a concomitant occurrence of a supernumerary tooth and two congenitally missing teeth. The supernumerary tooth was found in the left maxillary incisor region, while the left second premolar in the maxilla and the left lateral incisor in the mandible were congenitally missing. The supernumerary tooth showed a similar color and morphology to those of the maxilla lateral incisor, and the lateral incisor on the mesial side was diagnosed as a supernumerary tooth from dental age, e

Rare association of dens invaginatus with impacted mesiodens - A case report.

Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth occupying the position in the maxillary anterior region. This additional tooth structure may cause disturbance in eruption or position of the adjacent teeth. About 8-25% of supernumerary teeth in the anterior region erupt spontaneously. Un-erupted supernumerary teeth are incidentally identified on a routine radiographic examination. Dens invaginatus is a rare tooth malformation showing an in-folding of enamel and dentine of affected tooth sometimes extending deep into the pulp cavity and the root portion. We report a case of un-erupted mesiodens causing midli

Supernumerary teeth in the primary dentition: a report of two cases.

Supernumerary teeth occur frequently in the permanent dentition, but they are rare in the primary dentition. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth with a cone shaped crown and a short root. The supernumerary tooth which bears resemblance to the tooth with which it is associated is called a supplemental tooth. The etiology of supernumerary teeth is still unknown and not well understood. Radiographic examination of pre-school children is essential for their diagnosis. Early removal of these teeth is required so that complications such as delay in eruption of permanent teeth, crowding, diastema, rot

Orthodontic treatment for an unerupted and severely rotated maxillary central incisor. A case report.

BACKGROUND: Many reports have indicated the treatment for permanent teeth with disturbed eruption due to the presence of supernumerary teeth. However, successful treatment for an unerupted maxillary incisor with severe rotation and another maxillary incisor with disturbed eruption by a supernumerary tooth is quite rare. CASE REPORT: We treated a 7-year-old Japanese male with an unerupted and severely rotated maxillary right incisor, along with a maxillary left incisor due to interference with eruption by an inverted supernumerary tooth. Orthodontic treatment using surgical exposure, traction

A retrospective evaluation of the eruption of impacted permanent incisors after extraction of supernumerary teeth.

AIMS: Delayed eruption of teeth may be caused by the presence of one or more supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate findings, predisposing factors and differentiate different techniques used that affect the outcome following removal of supernumerary teeth. A comprehensive literature review was also undertaken. METHODS: A longitudinal retrospective study was carried out at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital. A total of 120 patients were identified from the general anesthesia records that had supernumeraries extracted. Only 43 cases had delayed eruption of teeth cau

Multi-lobed mesiodens with a palatal talon cusp: a rare case report.

Mesiodens is a midline supernumerary tooth commonly seen in the maxillary arch and the talon cusp is a rare dental developmental anomaly seen on the lingual surface of anterior teeth. This paper presents a rare clinical case of development of talon cusp in a mesiodens with multiple lobes, which interfered with both occlusion and appearance of an 11-year-old patient. During clinical interview, the patient reported difficulty on mastication. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed that a supernumerary tooth with completely formed root was causing an occlusal interference. The supernumerar

A novel mutation of adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene results in the formation of supernumerary teeth.

Supernumerary teeth are teeth that are present in addition to normal teeth. Although several hypotheses and some molecular signalling pathways explain the formation of supernumerary teeth, but their exact disease pathogenesis is unknown. To study the molecular mechanisms of supernumerary tooth-related syndrome (Gardner syndrome), a deeper understanding of the aetiology of supernumerary teeth and the associated syndrome is needed, with the goal of inhibiting disease inheritance via prenatal diagnosis. We recruited a Chinese family with Gardner syndrome. Haematoxylin and eosin staining of supern

Supplemental tooth in primary dentition.

An extra tooth causing numerical excess in dentition is described as supernumerary tooth, and the resultant condition is termed as hyperdontia. Hyperdontia is more commonly seen in the permanent dentition than primary one. Supernumerary tooth which resembles tooth shape and supplements for occlusion is called as supplemental tooth. We present a case with supplemental tooth in primary dentition.

Involving supernumerary teeth in "qpdb" teeth numbering system.

Supernumerary teeth are extra-dentation or tooth-like structure that may be present anywhere in the oral cavity. Currently used numbering systems lack a standardized method for identifying supernumerary teeth which might result in misinterpretation and hinder effective collaboration among dental practitioners. A pre-study questionnaire was conducted on 235 dental practitioners, including dentists, interns and clinical dental students to evaluate their previous experience with supernumerary teeth and the numbering systems used to identify them. Of the respondents, only 32% reported using system

Radiographic Follow-Up during Orthodontic Treatment for Early Diagnosis of Sequential Supernumerary Teeth.

Most supernumerary teeth are impacted and asymptomatic. Objective. The aim of this paper is to describe two cases of sequential development of supernumerary teeth in the mandibular premolar region, identified during orthodontic treatment. Reports. The first case describes the radiographic follow-up of a female patient that presented a supernumerary tooth at the age of 9 years and 10 months in the right mandibular premolar region, followed by a further supernumerary tooth in the left mandibular premolar region identified at the age of 11 years and 3 months. The epidemiology of supernumerary teeth and the associated molecular mechanism.

Supernumerary teeth are common clinical dental anomalies. Although various studies have provided abundant information regarding genes and signaling pathways involved in tooth morphogenesis, which include Wnt, FGF, BMP, and Shh, the molecular mechanism of tooth formation, especially for supernumerary teeth, is still unclear. In the population, some cases of supernumerary teeth are sporadic, while others are syndrome-related with familial hereditary. The prompt and accurate diagnosis of syndrome related supernumerary teeth is quite important for some distinctive disorders. Mice are the most comm

Multiple Geminated Supernumerary Premolars: A Rare Case Report.

Supernumerary teeth may be defined as any teeth or tooth substance in excess of the usual configuration of 20 deciduous and 32 permanent teeth. Gemination is defined as an attempt by a single tooth bud to divide, with a resultant formation of either a large tooth with a bifid crown or two completely divided teeth throughout the crown and root. Geminated supernumerary premolar is a rarity and the possibility of multiple occurrences is even rarer. An exhaustive review of English literature and a PubMed search conducted using the terms "gemination" and "multiple geminated supernumerary" revealed

Molariform mesiodens in primary dentition: a case report.

A supernumerary tooth is a developmental anomaly and it has been argued to arise from multiple aetiologies. Mesiodens is a midline supernumerary tooth which is commonly seen in the maxillary arch, and incidence of molariform mesiodens in the maxillary midline is rare in permanent dentition and extremely uncommon in primary dentition. A midline supernumerary tooth in the primary dentition can cause an ectopic or a delayed eruption of permanent central incisors, which will further alter occlusion and may compromise aesthetics and formation of dentigerous cysts. This paper reports a rare case whi

The management of supernumerary teeth in childhood--a retrospective study of practice in Bristol Dental Hospital, England and Westmead Dental Hospital, Sydney, Australia.

This study compared the treatment provided for patients with supernumerary teeth in Bristol Dental Hospital with those in Westmead Dental Hospital, Sydney, Australia. The records of 63 children referred for removal of a supernumerary tooth in Bristol and 96 children in Westmead were examined, involving a total of 215 supernumerary teeth. Differences in the treatment provided for these patients were found not only between the two centres but also within one centre. There appeared to be no standardised route by which these patients were seen and therefore no standardised pattern of treatment. Co

Revisiting the supernumerary: the epidemiological and molecular basis of extra teeth.

Supernumerary teeth are a common clinical and radiographic finding and may produce occlusal and dental problems. The aetiological basis of extra teeth is poorly understood in human populations; however, the mouse provides a useful model system to investigate the complex genetics of tooth development. This article describes recent advances in our understanding of the genetic basis of supernumerary teeth. We have reviewed biological evidence that provides insight into why supernumerary tooth formation may occur. Indeed, many of the molecular signalling pathways known to be involved in normal dev

Late-developing supernumerary mandibular premolar: a case report.

This report presents a case of a patient who developed a supernumerary mandibular premolar during the course of orthodontic treatment. Evidence of this tooth comes from consecutive panoramic radiographs. It is not routine practice to screen for developing supernumerary teeth during orthodontic treatment. Therefore, the possibility of supernumerary tooth interference with occlusal development or orthodontic treatment should always be kept in mind. A brief review of literature concerning the late formation of supernumerary teeth is included.

Study protocol for the management of impacted maxillary central incisors: a multicentre randomised clinical trial: the iMAC Trial.

BACKGROUND: Failure of eruption of the maxillary permanent incisor teeth usually presents in the mixed dentition between the ages of 7 and 9 years. Missing and unerupted maxillary incisors can be regarded as unattractive and have a potentially negative impact on facial and dental aesthetics. The presence of a supernumerary tooth (or odontoma) is commonly responsible for failed eruption or impaction of the permanent maxillary incisors. The primary objective of this trial is to investigate the success of eruption associated with maxillary incisor teeth that have failed to erupt because of a supe

Solitary mesiodens in primary dentition.

This article reports a rare case of a preschool-aged girl child with a supernumerary tooth in the maxillary anterior region between the primary central incisors. Clinical and radiographic evaluations confirmed the presence of a conical supernumerary tooth without any associated pathology or anomalies in the developing permanent dentition. The supernumerary tooth was extracted under local anaesthesia to prevent obstruction or deflection of the permanent central incisors. Postoperative healing was uneventful, with follow-up confirming satisfactory recovery. The article highlights the importance

Concrescent triplets involving primary anterior teeth.

Odontogenesis is a complex process wherein more than 200 genes are known to play a significant role in tooth development. An imbalance can lead to an abnormality in the number, size, shape or structure of the developing tooth/teeth. The presence of an extra dental lamina forms a supernumerary tooth. The supernumerary teeth are of two types: A rudimentary tooth where the supernumerary tooth does not resemble any tooth in the normal series or a supplemental tooth in which this anomalous tooth resembles one in the normal series. It is also very rare to encounter triple teeth in primary dentition.
