Transmigration of mandibular canines: report of six cases and review of the literature.

Six young adults were found to have transmigrated mandibular canines. One patient presented with two transmigrated canines. Of the seven impacted teeth, the left mandibular canines was involved in five instances and the right two. In all patients, the primary canine was present in the dental arch. A supernumerary tooth was disclosed on the panoramic radiograph of two patients. Five patients underwent surgical removal of the transmigrated tooth from an intraoral approach. One patient experienced transient postoperative paresthesia in the zone innervated by the mental nerve. When the transmigrat

Dentigerous cyst in a young child.

Dentigerous cyst is a type of odontogenic cysts and generally occurs in the ages of twenties or thirties. Dentigerous cyst always includes a tooth which cannot complete the eruption process and occurs around the crown by the fluid accumulation between the layers of enamel organ. In rare cases, dentigerous cyst occurs in the first decade of life and develops in an immature permanent tooth as a result of a chronic inflammation of overlying nonvital primary tooth. In this report, a case of dentigerous cyst in primary dentition in a 5-year-old child patient and its treatment were presented. The de

Transplantation of a tooth involved in dentigerous cyst.

To salvage an uneruputed tooth within a dentigerous cyst, the retransplantation of the unerupted premolar involved in the dentigerous cyst was performed. In the present case a dentigerous cyst with the impacted maxillary second premolar of a 10-year-old boy was removed, because of the missing eruption after marsupialisation of the premolar 4 months earlier. Covering the crown and the one third of root, the cyst was removed from the tooth, and the premolar was retransplanted into a cavity created between the premolar and first molar in the maxilla. The tooth was fixed with resin and a twisted w

Indications for digital volume tomography in orthodontics.

Disturbances in tooth eruption and tooth impactions make great demands on radiographic diagnostics. There is often need for radiographic images in various projections to assess the exact position of unerupted and impacted teeth. Digital volume tomography (DVT) is a method for localizing hard tissue structures such as bone and teeth on various planes. Moreover, it makes a three-dimensional image of the teeth, jaws and the viscerocranium possible. From an orthodontic point of view, digital volume tomography is indicated to detect impacted and ectopic teeth and to demonstrate the amount of bone a

Unrevealed Caries in Unerupted Teeth: A Prevalence Study.

BACKGROUND: Preeruptive caries are an abnormal, well-circumscribed, radiolucent area, occurring within the coronal dentinal tissue close to the dentinoenamel junction of unerupted teeth. OPGs are commonly taken in children for assessing the dental age and eruption sequence. It can be used as a good diagnostic source for detection of PEIR defects. AIM: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of Preeruptive intracoronal dentin radiolucencies in unerupted permanent teeth from orthopantomogram. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A total of 1000 standard orthopantomographs of children below 12 yea

Stereomicroscopy, film radiography, microradiography and naked-eye inspection of tooth sections as validation for occlusal caries diagnosis.

In establishing a trustworthy validation for occlusal caries lesions, various methods have been used after sectioning teeth. The aim of the present study was to compare the accuracy of four such methods: stereomicroscopy (SM), film radiography (FR), microradiography (MR) and naked-eye inspection (NEI) for the detection of caries in occlusal tooth surfaces. Further, the interobserver agreement between three observers' registrations of occlusal caries by these methods was evaluated. The material consisted of 18 unerupted third molars known to be sound with respect to caries, as they were embedde

Piezosurgery-Assisted Surgical Treatment in Impacted Canine Transmigration.

Delayed eruption of a canine tooth may represent a possible impaction. If this is the case, a slight elevation in the palatal or vestibular mucosa is often observed. Cases of transmigration, where the unerupted tooth crosses the midline, are less frequent. This article reports on the piezosurgery-assisted surgical treatment of a transmigrated canine in the mentonian region. Treatment for this condition varies depending on the clinical characteristics, symptoms, and location of the dental element. The surgical treatment established for this case was satisfactory, and full recovery of the patien

A comparative histologic study of the pulp-dentinal interface in undemineralized and demineralized tooth sections.

This study examines cellular differences between undemineralized and demineralized tooth sections. The material comprised unerupted and partly erupted third molars. After fixation for 24 h, 10- to 15-microns ground sections were prepared from half of the tooth, using a cutting-grinding system. The sections were compared with demineralized routine sections from the other half of the tooth. Undemineralized sections showed a better capacity for preserving the tissue integration. Especially between the odontoblast layer and the predentin a low frequency of disjunctions or tears were noted. At this

Surgical dental treatment for military personnel: where and when?--a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Oral health is essential for combat readiness. The classification for combat readiness includes the Dental Fitness Categories, which are used to estimate a soldier's need for emergency dental care while deployed overseas. When the issue at hand is in regard to unerupted or additional teeth, the treating dentist faces a difficult decision since there is no evidence-based practice guidelines. CASE REPORT: An otherwise healthy 20 year-old soldier initially presented to his general physician (Role I) with toothache in the lower jaw. The initial referral to a general dentist (Role II

The unerupted maxillary canine--a post-surgical review.

The orthodontic records of 685 patients referred for surgical exposure of an unerupted impacted maxillary canine tooth were examined. The condition was more common among females than males, slightly less than 2:1. The impacted teeth had a palatal-labial ratio of 3:1. All of the teeth were exposed using the open surgical technique and in 98% of cases the tooth erupted and was orthodontically aligned. In 2% of cases ankylosis occurred and the teeth were subsequently extracted. The presence of peg-shaped lateral incisors associated with the impacted maxillary canine tooth was 3.4% of the total nu

Case report: two nasal floor compound odontomas associated with impacted maxillary incisor.

AIM: The purpose of this report is to describe the logical sequence of treatment in a case of a six year old caucasian female patient with two nasal floor compound odontomas, that delayed eruption of a maxillary permanent incisor. TREATMENT: The odontomas were surgically removed. However, as the maxillary incisor did not erupt spontaneously, after a suitable period of observation, an orthodontic treatment approach was adopted. This was to obtain an adequate space for the unerupted tooth and to move it to its normal position. CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and surgical intervention of supernumer

Large Dentigerous Cyst Associated to Maxillary Canine.

Dentigerous cysts are defined as a cyst originated by separation of the follicle of dental crown of a tooth unerupted. Although most dentigerous cysts are considered developmental cysts, some cases seem to have an inflammatory origin. The aim of this study was to show a case of an 8-year-old patient, male, presenting a lesion in maxilla with large proportions. Computed tomography scans showed a hypodense image, well-defined, associated to unerupted teeth. The case was treated by enucleation of the lesion under local anesthesia. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnostic suspicious

Ameloblastic fibroma of the mandible associated with root resorption and unerupted teeth: a case report.

Ameloblastic fibroma (AF) is an uncommon benign odontogenic mixed tumor. A case of an AF associated with unerupted and missing teeth is presented. A 13-year-old girl was referred for evaluation of a painless swelling of her right mandible. The most remarkable finding was the resorption of the proximal root of the permanent first molar. The lesion was completely enucleated. Follow-up showed satisfactory bony healing, and the resorbed root was completely surrounded by a continuous layer of intact lamina dura. In most cases, the patient presents to the clinician complaining of an unerupted tooth

Ameloblastic Fibro-Odontoma.

The ameloblastic fibro-odontoma (AFO) is a rare, mixed odontogenic tumor exhibiting the histological characters of the ameloblastic fibroma and complex odontoma. It is comprised of proliferating ectodermal and mesenchymal components of odontogenic tissue as well as enamel and dentin. AFO normally presents as an asymptomatic swelling of the posterior maxilla or mandible and is usually associated with developing teeth, occurring predominantly in children and adolescents. Such lesions are generally found upon radiographic examination of patients whose tooth eruption is delayed. This lesion often

Dentigerous cyst associated with multiple mesiodens: a case report.

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. When observed with erupted and complete dentition the diagnosis is a surprise; as about 95% of dentigerous cysts involve the permanent dentition and only 5% are associated with supernumerary teeth. The usual age of clinical presentation of dentigerous cyst due to supernumerary tooth is during the first four decades. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth situated between the maxillary central incisors. More frequently

Retrospective Follow-up Assessment of Risk Variables Influencing the Outcome of Autologous Tooth Transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: This retrospective study aimed to identify which patient-, donor tooth-, recipient site-, and surgical procedure-related variables may influence the outcome of tooth autotransplantation. METHODS: The sample included 128 autotransplants performed in 122 patients. Single-visit clinical/imaging examinations were used to define the outcome as successful, survival, or failure. The association of potential indicators with the survival or failure categories was analyzed individually and adjusted for confounders through multivariate logistic regression models. RESULTS: After a follow-u

Ameloblastic fibrodentinoma with a congenitally missing second premolar tooth: a case report.

Ameloblastic fibrodentinoma (AFD) is a rare benign mixed odontogenic tumor that occurs predominantly in children and young adults. AFD is usually associated with delayed eruption of the tooth and shows painless swelling. We present a case of AFD affecting an 8-year-old Japanese girl with a complaint of delayed eruption of her left mandibular second premolar tooth. Intraoral examination did not reveal any sign of pain or swelling in the left mandible. Panoramic radiography revealed a radiolucent and well-circumscribed lesion, which contained radiopaque material at the premolar lesion of the lef
