Museum skull specimens from 224 Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) were examined macroscopically using an established protocol for examination of mammalian skull specimens. Foxes were collected from coastal and island regions of Alaska, USA, except for two individuals. Collection years ranged from 1931 to 2016 with most specimens collected during the 1950s and 1960s. The study population comprised more females (n = 134, 59.8%) than males (n = 83, 37.0%) and individuals of unknown sex (n = 7, 3.1%). There were 108 (48.2%) young adults, 115 (51.3%) adults, and one (0.4%) individual of unknown age. A

Dens evaginatus is a developmental anomaly that produces a tubercle on the occlusal surface of a tooth. It is found most frequently in the mandibular premolars. The occlusal tubercle easily causes occlusal interferences. Attrition or fracture of the tubercle can lead to pulpitis, pulp necrosis, periapical pathosis, and periapical infection. This case report illustrates the treatment of facial cellulitis arising from dens evaginatus with open apex. Calcium hydroxide was used for the apexification procedure. One year after canal obturation, radiography revealed no apical pathosis and the apical

Skulls from 145 northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) were examined macroscopically according to predefined criteria. The museum specimens were acquired from strandings along the west coast of the USA between 1896 and 2008. Seventy-one skulls (49.0%) were from male animals, 56 (38.6%) from female animals and 18 (12.4%) from animals of unknown sex. Their age varied from juvenile to adult, with 58 adult animals (40.0%) and 87 juvenile animals (60.0%). The majority of teeth were available for examination (95.1%); 3.4% of teeth were artefactually absent, 0.8% were deemed absent due to acquired

With tooth attrition, the height of the alveolar crest does not increase to keep pace with active tooth eruption and the cemento-enamel junction-alveolar crest distance increases slightly with age in aboriginal skulls. But there is no atrophy of the alveolar bony margin. Some decrease in interalveolar height does occur. This does not necessarily mean that passive eruption with exposure of cementum is normal. Rather it is postulated that the epithelial attachment proliferates onto cementum, inhibiting alveolar crest addition, while the base of the gingival sulcus remains at the cemento-enamel j

RATIONALE: While full-coverage crowns are the conventional solution for restoring severely compromised vertical distance of occlusion restoration, this approach is inherently invasive. This report details a conservative alternative using veneers in a dental fluorosis patient - a clinical scenario seldom documented in developed regions.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 57-year-old patient from a high-fluoride area presented with impaired masticatory function and severe occlusal wear.
DIAGNOSES: Severe attrition of the upper and lower dentition. Severe dental fluorosis.
INTERVENTIONS: A minimally invasive

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear lesion, otherwise known as tooth surface loss, is an insidious cumulative and multifactorial condition causing irreversible destruction of tooth enamel and dentine. Over time this lesion can threaten the affected individual's Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). OHRQoL entails interaction among oral health systems: social factors, psychological factors, and the rest of the body. Though, previous studies done decades ago also reported a high prevalence of tooth wear among the elderly in Nigeria, before now there has been no study on the impact of tooth wear types

BACKGROUND: This nonsystematic review summarizes the effects of saliva on some of the diseases affecting the hard and soft oral tissues.
RESULTS: Saliva enters the mouth at several locations, and the different secretions are not well-mixed. Saliva in the mouth forms a thin film, the velocity of which varies greatly at different sites. This variation appears to account for the site specificity of smooth-surface caries and supragingival calculus deposition. Saliva protects against dental caries, erosion, attrition, abrasion, candidiasis and the abrasive mucosal lesions seen commonly in patients

The purpose of the study was to analyse the mobility of teeth with severe orthodontically induced root resorption, at follow-up several years after active treatment, and to evaluate mobility in relation to root length and alveolar bone support. Seventy-three maxillary incisors were examined in 20 patients, 10-15 years after active treatment in 13 patients (age 24-32 years) and 5-10 years after active treatment in seven patients (age 20-25 years). All had worn fixed or removable retainers; seven still had bonded twistflex retainers. Total root length and intra-alveolar root length were measured

(1) Background: From a young age, boys are more often affected by tooth wear than girls. This suggests an influence of the male sex hormone (testosterone) on the aetiology of tooth wear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the incidence of tooth wear in relation to steroid hormone levels in children. (2) Methods: 1022 test persons aged between 10 and 18 (491 male, 531 female) from the LIFE Child study underwent medical and dental examination. Tooth wear was measured through clinical inspection. Blood samples were taken to determine hormone levels (testosterone, SHBG). The level of

Functional diagnoses can sometimes be ambiguous. An occlusal disorder may be paired with a parafunctional condition, as in the case presented, which features a patient who experienced anterior tooth chipping and thinning of maxillary incisal edges. The case demonstrates the principles of risk-based treatment planning and discusses challenges involved in identifying and evaluating all the evidence to maximize restorative treatment plan success. In this case, functional risk during mastication was reduced using orthodontic therapy, and a nightguard was employed to combat destructive forces durin

BACKGROUND: Tooth wear is an increasing concern, particularly among younger individuals, driven by lifestyle and dietary changes as well as by bruxism. This condition, including attrition, abrasion and erosion, can result in sensitivity, aesthetic decline and functional impairment. Although dental caries prevention has improved, tooth wear remains a complex, multifactorial problem requiring early detection and effective management.
OBJECTIVES: This paper is a literature survey that provides an overview and compares three diagnostic systems for tooth wear assessment-the Smith and Knight Index

The abrasiveness of food is a key determinant in the rate of physiological attrition (dental wear) in humans. With increasing food processing through time, the rate of physiological dental wear in human teeth has decreased markedly. Many consider such wear to be beneficial to oral health and that insufficient wear may result in impaction of the third molars. If enhanced extraoral food processing provides an evolutionary advantage, then it is possible that agenesis of the redundant third molar may follow. One of the aims here was to examine impaction and agenesis of the third molars in four pop

OBJECTIVE: The incidence of craniofacial and dental anomalies in children with the more severe nonlethal forms of osteogenesis imperfecta was evaluated.
STUDY DESIGN: The study evaluated 40 children (age range, 1-17.5 years) with types III and IV osteogenesis imperfecta. In each case, the dentition was evaluated for the presence of dentinogenesis imperfecta, attrition, and caries, as well as for radiographic appearance, dental development, and malocclusion.
RESULTS: The incidence of dentinogenesis imperfecta was greater than 80% in the primary dentition. Clinically, the color of the dentitio

INTRODUCTION: The diagnosis and treatment planning of cracked teeth depend on the understanding of how cracks affect the surrounding tissues. This study evaluated the dentin and pulp conditions in teeth affected by cracks and attrition.
METHODS: Specimens under investigation included 12 cracked posterior teeth and 8 teeth with severe attrition. These teeth were obtained consecutively in a private practice and were extracted for reasons not related to this study. Teeth were processed for histopathologic and histobacteriologic analyses.
RESULTS: Cracks were histologically detected in all speci

OBJECTIVE: Domestic ferrets have been used for many purposes, but recently their popularity as companion animals has increased greatly. However, data on their oral and dental diseases are rare. The objective of this study was therefore to describe oral and dental diseases in a population of client-owned domestic ferrets.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional clinical study, detailed oral and dental examination and full-mouth dental radiographs were performed in 57 client-owned ferrets.
RESULTS: Variations in occlusion and number of roots per tooth were noted in comparison with previously publishe
