Recalcitrant osteomyelitis following tooth extraction in a case of malignant osteopetrosis.

Malignant osteopetrosis generally begins in utero and often results in stillbirth. Besides, failure to thrive, increased bone fragility resulting in frequent fractures and recurrent bone infections are the other characteristic features. Infections after tooth extraction and fracture of the sclerotic bone following mild trauma are serious complications, as these ordinarily common problems are very difficult to treat in such patients. Poor bone vascularisation and reduced local defences prolong the defensive response. A rare case of malignant osteopetrosis in a 19-year-old girl, who presented wi

Secondary abscess formation in pituitary adenoma after tooth extraction. Case report.

The presence of an abscess in a pituitary tumor is a very rare finding. The authors report the case of a 69-year-old man with a pituitary adenoma confirmed by neuroimaging results, in whom a high fever, meningismus, and left-sided ophthalmoplegia developed 4 days after tooth extraction. The results of serial cranial magnetic resonance imaging were highly indicative of an abscess formation within the pituitary adenoma. During surgery the tumor was approached transsphenoidally and removed. Histological examination confirmed the presence of an abscess formation within the pituitary adenoma. It is

The effect of primary tooth extraction on the eruption of succedaneous premolars.

This study evaluated the time of eruption of maxillary and mandibular premolars after the premature loss of the antecedent; the contralateral side was used as the control. Although environmental factors seem to influence tooth emergence, they appear to have little influence on tooth maturation.

A survey of causes of permanent tooth extractions in South Australia.

Reasons for permanent tooth extractions were studied in a survey in South Australia conducted over a two week period in which 154 dentists participated, a response rate of 43 per cent. Of 2,387 teeth extracted from 1,104 patients, caries accounted for 52 per cent, periodontal and orthodontic causes 25.6 and 11.1 per cent respectively, impacted teeth 6.5 percent, and prosthetic reasons 2.8 per cent. Caries was the most prevalent cause in the age groups 20-40 and over 70 years. Between 40 and 70 years more than 50 per cent of the teeth were extracted for periodontal reasons.

A Modified Tooth Extraction Approach for Improving Procedural Efficiency and Consistency in a Murine Mandibular Tooth Socket Healing Model.

The tooth socket healing model (TSHM) is a widely used animal model for investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying bone regeneration. Although the murine mandibular TSHM is valuable for studying mandibular-specific pathological processes, establishing this model remains technically challenging because of the anatomical and biomechanical characteristics of the mandibular molar region. This protocol describes a modified approach for mandibular first molar extraction in mice and compares its performance with the conventional technique to improve procedural efficiency and reproducibility. Management of Equine Post-Extraction Cheek Tooth Alveoli: Application of Alveolar Plugs.

Preservation of dentition remains the primary goal of equine dentistry; however, cheek tooth extraction is required in cases of severe dental pathology. Following tooth extraction, management of the post-extraction alveolus remains a significant clinical challenge due to its large size and susceptibility to contamination with feed material and bacteria. To mitigate these risks, alveolar plugs are commonly used to protect the alveolus, stabilize the blood clot, and support granulation tissue formation. This review summarizes the current case reports and research articles regarding the use of al

Intra-alveolar Adhesive Biomaterial Preserves Ridge Height After Tooth Extraction in Dogs.

This multicenter study evaluates the efficacy of a regenerative bone adhesive (RBA), a novel mineral-organic biomaterial, in maintaining alveolar ridge dimensions after extraction of large mandibular teeth in dogs. In a controlled, randomized clinical study, 47 patients with 59 tooth extraction sites across 10 practices were treated by veterinary dental specialists. Study extraction sites had the socket filled with RBA to the rim of the alveolar bone, whereas control sites healed with blood clot only. Computed tomography scans were performed at short-term (6-12 wk) and long-term (6-12 mo) foll

Prevalence of Reasons for Tooth Extraction in Small- and Medium-Breed Dogs.

As the life span of companion animals increases and their owners' concern for their quality of life increases, interest in dental diseases has also gained attention. While many studies have explored oral diseases in general, research on small-breed dogs remains limited. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed various diseases that led to tooth extraction in small- and medium-breed dogs. A study involving 2201 client-owned small- and medium-breed dogs was conducted. All dogs were categorized by sex, age, breed, and tooth position. Teeth were classified into untreated, missing, or extracted catego

Novel index for the evaluation of wound healing following erupted tooth extraction.

BACKGROUND: Understanding healing of the alveolar process is crucial for immediate implant, alveolar ridge preservation and guided bone regeneration procedures, and to evaluate it several different scales have been proposed; however, all have different characteristics and seem to miss a standardization allowing for an objective and dichotomous evaluation of the different aspects of wound healing. The objective of the present study is to propose and apply, in real clinical scenarios, a novel index for the objective evaluation of wound healing following erupted tooth extraction. METHODS: Health

Oral cheek tooth extraction and treatment of osteomyelitis in llamas and alpacas.

BACKGROUND: Advanced dental disease with associated osteomyelitis is commonly encountered in New World camelids (NWC). In the past, the treatment of choice consisted of extraoral techniques, with complications occurring in up to 70% of cases. With advances in the treatment of dental disease in other species, oral extraction may offer a less invasive alternative, possibly associated with fewer complications. This report describes the diagnosis, treatment and long-term outcome of NWC with dental disease. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of NWC with advanced dental disease undergoing oral

Ascending bacterial optic neuritis and meningoencephalitis following tooth extraction in a cat.

BACKGROUND: Dental procedures in cats are routinely performed, with complications rarely reported. However, when complications do occur, they can be severe, potentially resulting in penetrating ocular trauma, often leading to vision loss and subsequent enucleation. This report describes retrobulbar abscessation, ascending bacterial optic neuritis, and bacterial meningoencephalitis as a complication following routine tooth extraction in a cat. CASE PRESENTATION: A 12-year-old cat was presented six days after a routine dental procedure due to left-sided eye swelling, inappetence, and lethargy.

[Research progress on perioperative management of tooth extraction in denosumab-treated patients].

Denosumab, a human monoclonal antibody, is used for the prevention of malignant tumor-related bone events and the treatment of osteoporosis with high fracture risk. Since its approval in China in 2019, denosumab-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (DRONJ) has attracted increasing attention. DRONJ, similar to bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw, often occurs after tooth extraction and manifests as exposed bone necrosis, purulent discharge, facial swelling and pain, severely impacting patients' quality of life. However, the perioperative management strategies for DRONJ differ from those

[Paradoxical air embolism of intracerebral arteries as a complication of tooth extraction].

The article describes the rare clinical case, demonstrating sudden onset of neurological manifestations (seizures and consequent formation of ischemic stroke foci) in a 29 year-old female patient during tooth extraction (right lower third molar) using the high-speed dental drill. Air injection through damaged tissues caused subcutaneous emphysema in the buccal area that caused air embolism. Presence of asymptomatic congenital heart defect in the patient (atrial septal defect) allowed the bubbles of air to move paradoxically from right to left with consequent embolization of small cerebral arte
