[A new splint technique in dental traumatology].

The treatment of displacement injuries and fractures of permanent teeth is an important emergency therapy in the dental office. Due to new sport trends and various outdoor activities, the frequency of dental trauma of children and adolescents alike is steadily rising. The standard treatment of displacement or avulsion injuires of permanent teeth is repositioning or replantation with subsequent splinting. The dental trauma splint must be flexible to allow for the physiologic movement of the repositioned or replanted teeth in order to reduce the risk for ankylosis or external root resorption. St

Oral and dental findings in osteopetrorickets.

While dental findings of both rickets and osteopetrosis have been reported, there is no published report on the oral and dental findings of osteopetrorickets. In this paper dental findings of osteopetrorickets were presented. A two-year-old female child was referred to the pedodontics clinic for dental examinations before bone marrow transplantation. Her teeth showed severe mobility and the eruption of the teeth were delayed. The dental findings of the patient were different from that of osteopetrosis and rickets.

[A rare case of congenital dentin dysplasia in a child aged 8 years].

In the reported case the authors observed a considerable mobility of all milk teeth and permanent teeth. The degree of this mobility varied. The crowns of milk and permanent teeth had a normal size, shape and colour. All teeth were unresponsive to thermal and electric stimulation. Radiological examination showed a nearly complete lack of roots and complete absence of pulp chambers and root canals. This was confirmed by histological examinations demonstrating that the inner part of the teeth in the crown and root was filled with hard masses which in light microscopy resembled newly forming comp

The effects of intrusive loading on axial movements of impeded and unimpeded rat incisors: estimation of eruptive force.

Axial movements of impeded and unimpeded rat mandibular incisors were measured following application and removal of intrusive loads of 1, 2, 5, 10 and 20 mN in a stepwise order at intervals of 1h on erupting teeth. The tooth movements were recorded by a displacement detector under artificial respiration with halothane anaesthesia. The loading and unloading procedures brought about the tooth movements in two steps: an initial rapid movement immediately after application or removal of the load and a subsequent slow and gradual movement. The initial rapid intrusive or extrusive tooth movements we

Initial observations of cheek tooth abnormalities in sheep in Slovenia.

Observations were made on a small flock of 50 sheep of the native Slovenian Jezersko-Solcava breed by investigators with dental training. The aim was to determine the range of naturally occurring dental diseases, so postmortem examinations were performed on animals slaughtered for meat or culled due to disease. Additional data were obtained by examination of 25 specimens submitted for investigation of unexplained death at a pathology centre. Seventeen (34 per cent) of the flock had incisor disease but only five became clinically ill; all these five had advanced cheek tooth disease (gingival re

Effectiveness of nonsurgical re-instrumentation: Tooth-related factors.

BACKGROUND: To investigate tooth-related factors that influence pocket closure (PC) and the reduction of pocket probing depths (PPD) after nonsurgical re-instrumentation (NSRI) as part of step 3 therapy. METHODS: A total of 480 patients (10,807 teeth) presenting with residual pockets 6.33 ± 3.79 months after steps 1 and 2 of periodontal therapy were included and retrospectively analyzed before and 5.93 ± 4.31 months after NSRI. Reduction of PPD and PC rates following NSRI were associated with tooth-related factors, namely tooth type, arch, number of roots, furcation involvement (FI), pulp vit

Satisfaction with resilient denture liner versus acrylic resin telescopic prostheses for patients with ectodermal dysplasia: A nonrandomized crossover clinical trial.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Patients with ectodermal dysplasia are characterized by anodontia or oligodontia. How their challenging prosthodontic rehabilitation might be optimized is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this crossover study was to evaluate the effect of resilient denture liner versus acrylic resin copings in complete overdentures for patients with ectodermal dysplasia. Outcome measures included patient satisfaction, retention, and periodontal health of the abutment tooth. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten partially edentulous participants diagnosed with ectodermal dysplasia were recruited fro

Assessment of Bone Height Changes Based on the Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Following Intentional Replantation for Periodontally Compromised Teeth.

Background and Objectives; This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes and bone changes before and after intentional replantation (IR) for periodontally compromised teeth by using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods; Fourteen periodontally involved teeth were selected for IR. A preoperative orthodontic procedure was performed to apply luxation, and the tooth was then gently extracted. Retrograde filling of the root-end canal was performed. Once the tooth was repositioned in the socket, it was splinted with the adjacent tooth. After three months, prosthetic restor

Alveolar Bone Fracture: Pathognomonic Sign for Clinical Diagnosis.

AIM: Dental injuries, especially luxation and avulsion, are common. Dental trauma can cause alveolar bone fracture that can lead to tooth loss and malocclusion. Single tooth alveolar bone fractures are difficult to identify unless it protrudes through the overlying mucosa and can be visualized. Pain, malocclusion, and tooth mobility provide signs of suspected alveolar bone fractures. Integrity of the proximate alveolar bone should be examined for fractures where avulsion, luxation, or other tooth trauma is detected. Any suggestion of alveolar fractures should be further investigated with an ap

Current concepts in hypophosphatasia: case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND.  Hypophosphatasia (HP) is characterized by defective mineralization of bone and teeth because of deficient alkaline phosphatase activity. There are generally six recognized clinical forms, of which the most severe is often lethal prenatally or early in life. In milder forms, such as odontohypophosphatasia (OHP), premature exfoliation of primary teeth may be the only clinical manifestation. CASE REPORT.  A 20-month-old girl was referred to the Specialist Paediatric Salaried Dental Service within the Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust with mobility of tooth numbers 71 and 81

Teeth in the line of mandibular fractures.

Many mandibular fractures occur through tooth sockets. The treatment plan for teeth in the line of fracture has evolved through the years because of the development of new antibiotics and fixation techniques. In this article we review the history and current studies and discuss treatment protocols for teeth in the line of mandibular fractures.

En Bloc Autotransplantation of Retained Canine in the Mandible: A Case Presentation.

Missing canines compromise function and esthetics and therefore should be restored. In case of a retained canine, there can be a conservative approach of classic orthodontic eruption. If that is not effective, an alternative treatment method is to remove the retained tooth, followed by implant placement or transalveolar autotransplantation of the retained canine. En bloc autotransplantation of a retained canine, with surrounding bone, preserves canine periodontium and increases chances for revascularization and vitality of the transplanted tooth. This paper presents an en bloc autotransplantat

Diagnosing and treatment planning inadequate tooth display.

Some of the most challenging patients to produce a pleasing smile for are those who present with inadequate tooth display (either due to tooth position, the patient has normal size teeth, but they aren't exposed adequately to fill out the smile) or due to tooth size (the teeth are small, often due to tooth wear). The key to understanding how to manage these patients is to learn to understand the possible aetiologies that could produce the condition, and learn how to diagnose which aetiologies exist for your patient. Potential aetiologies for inadequate tooth display in patients with normal len

Elastic band causing exfoliation of the upper permanent central incisors.

Objective. This study reports a case in which elastic band use culminated in the loss of the incisors. Case Report. An 11-year-old white girl was seen complaining of pain, with purulent discharge and severe tooth mobility. The bone destruction detected radiographically in the region, despite its single location and absence in posterior quadrants of the maxilla and/or mandible, was similar to that observed in Langerhans cell disease. To our surprise, an elastic band involving the midportion of the roots of the two upper central incisors was found during biopsy. The debris was removed and a meta

Autogenous Transplantation of an Immature Undersized Third Molar to Rehabilitate a Cyst-associated Lateral Incisor Defect: A 3-Year Case Report.

Severe periapical cysts frequently result in tooth loss with concomitant severe alveolar bone destruction, precluding immediate implant placement. Autogenous tooth transplantation, which involves transplanting the patient's own tooth to the recipient site, offers a biological approach to reconstruct both the dentition and supporting bone structures. This report presents a 25-year-old female with a mobile, discolored maxillary right lateral incisor (#12) exhibiting grade 3 mobility due to a large periapical cyst (extending to #14 on cone-beam computed tomography) with root developmental arrest,

Maturogenesis of an Early Erupted Immature Permanent Tooth: A Case Report With 7-Year Follow-Up.

The main objective of treatment of an undeveloped tooth (immature) is to provide vital pulp therapy to allow continued development of root dentin. A case report is presented that demonstrates the use of calcium hydroxide (CaOH₂) as an indirect pulp-copping material for the purpose of continued maturogenesis of an early-erupted permanent tooth with severe mobility and almost-begun root formation. Seven-year radiographic and clinical follow-up demonstrated a vital pulp and physiologic root development without any endodontic failure clinically or radiographicaly.

Saving the despair: conservative management of an endo-perio lesion using hemisection.

Hemisection, a surgical procedure involving the removal of one root and its associated coronal portion from a multi-rooted tooth, is a complex treatment option that aims to salvage a severely compromised tooth while maintaining its functionality and overall oral health. A middle-aged female patient presented with pain and tooth mobility in the lower jaw for the past 2 months. Initially, root canal treatment was done to treat symptoms of symptomatic irreversible pulpitis and apical periodontitis. However, considering the poor prognosis and restorability of the tooth, surgical flap reflection wa
