[Determination of fluorides and fluorophosphates in drugs, toothpastes and mineral waters by gas liquid chromatography].

Fluorides and monofluorophosphates present in drugs, toothpastes and mineral waters are converted into an organic compound by trimethylchlorosilane at acidic pH. The trimethylfluorosilane formed is determined with isopentane as internal standard by gas liquid chromatography with flame ionization detection. Some drugs containing fluoride at therapeutic or physiologic concentrations also some toothpastes and mineral waters were analyzed easily by this method. No interferences due to excipients or to other active substances present in drugs or toothpastes were observed with this method. Because o

Caries Control by CAPE Toothpaste: In Vitro, In Vivo, and In Situ Analysis.

Dental caries is closely associated with microbiome dysbiosis. Incorporating antimicrobial agents can enhance the efficacy of fluoride toothpaste. Our previous studies showed that caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), derived from propolis, effectively inhibited cariogenic bacteria. To formulate a novel CAPE-containing fluoridated toothpaste and establish a multistage evaluation system assessing its caries-controlling efficacy. The CAPE toothpaste's physicochemical properties were characterized. Its in vitro antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans was examined using quantitative sus

Efficacy of Herbal Fluoride Toothpaste in Preventing Early Childhood Caries.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a prevalent dental condition affecting children younger than 6 years. Conventional fluoride toothpastes are effective but raise concerns regarding fluorosis and ingestion in young children. Herbal fluoride toothpastes offer a natural alternative with added antimicrobial benefits. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was conducted among 120 children aged 3-5 years, divided into two groups: Group A used herbal fluoride toothpaste containing neem, clove, and 500 ppm fluoride; Group B used a nonherbal fluoride toothpaste with 500 ppm fluoride. Caries

Herbal toothpaste craze: A marketing triumph or a public health concern.

Despite the growing popularity of herbal toothpastes, there is limited awareness among consumers regarding their actual composition, potential risks or the importance of fluoride in caries prevention. This cross-sectional survey among 300 respondents of rural centres of a medical college found that 68% used herbal toothpaste with major influence through television adverts. Although 72% were convinced that herbal toothpastes are free from chemicals, only 18% knew of hazards like enamel wear and awareness of fluoride was comparatively low. Most participants complained of dental problems without

Effects of sodium lauryl sulfate and postbiotic toothpaste on oral microecology.

The diversity and delicate balance of the oral microbiome contribute to oral health, with its disruption leading to oral and systemic diseases. Toothpaste includes elements like traditional additives such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) as well as novel postbiotics derived from probiotics, which are commonly employed for maintaining oral hygiene and a healthy oral cavity. However, the response of the oral microbiota to these treatments remains poorly understood. In this study, we systematically investigated the impact of SLS, and toothpaste containing postbiotics (hereafter, postbiotic toothpas

Use of zinc oxide nanoparticles for detection of fluoride in toothpaste gel.

This study aimed to investigate the metal-binding effect of fluoride, contained in different commercial toothpaste gels; the study aimed to determine if the toothpastes contained excessive concentrations of fluoride, which result in white spot lesions. A spectrophotometric method that used spectrophotometric reagents, including zinc oxide nanoparticles and iron chloride, was used to determine fluoride distribution; the analysis was based on the selective attack of fluoride ions on metals. Fluoride concentrations between 0 and 1450 ppm were analyzed. Although the iron-fluoride complex was a mor

Antimicrobial effects of a stannous fluoride toothpaste in distinct oral microenvironments.

BACKGROUND: Clinical research has shown a relationship between microbial accumulations and oral diseases such as gingivitis and caries. The mouth harbors large densities of bacteria in distinct oral microenvironments, that is, dental plaque on teeth, saliva, and soft tissues such as the tongue, cheek, and gingiva. In this home-use study, the authors compared the effects of brushing with a newly formulated stannous fluoride toothpaste and a sodium monofluorophosphate dentifrice on bacteria of distinct oral microenvironments. METHODS: Adult participants completed a washout phase before baseline

Cheilitis caused by contact allergy to anethole in spearmint flavoured toothpaste.

A 63-year-old woman presented with a 6-year history of persistent cheilitis. Minimal improvement was achieved with therapeutic measures. Patch testing was positive to anethole, a flavouring used in her toothpaste. Her cheilitis resolved after cessation of the flavoured toothpaste. This case demonstrates the importance of considering contact allergy to toothpaste flavours in patients with cheilitis.

Cinnamic aldehyde in toothpaste. 1. Clinical aspects and patch tests.

Although cinnamon is known to cause dermatitis in bakers and confectioners, it has only rarely been reported as causing trouble in food or cosmetics. A newly-formulated 'spicy' toothpaste containing cinnamon as a flavouring agent was the cause of oral symptoms in eight patients referred to clinics in Buckinghamshire and in Malmö and in a further eight patients discovered subsequently. Similar symptoms and patch test results were observed independently at both centres. Positive reactions were obtained with 1% cinnamic aldehyde in 15 out of 16 patients tested. Only one patient reacted to a stand

Dynamics of root caries in older adults using high-fluoride toothpaste.

OBJECTIVE: To assess changes in the activity pattern of root caries lesions (RCLs) treated with fluoridated dentifrices (1450 vs 5000 ppm F) in community-dwelling older adults. METHODS: We used data from a previous randomized controlled clinical trial that evaluated the effectiveness of high-fluoride dentifrices for treating RCLs. A total of 2071 active and inactive RCLs initially detected were followed-up for 2 years. Modified Nyvad's criteria were used to determine activity status and each lesion was categorized into one of eight possible patterns of activity or inactivity at baseline, one

[The use of fluoride-free toothpaste: motivations and experiences of patients and perspectives of providers].

The use of fluoride-free toothpaste seems to be on the increase in recent years, despite the proven effectiveness of fluorides in preventing dental caries. Adults often choose fluoride-free toothpaste because they consider fluoride harmful or unnecessary, prefer organic or natural products, and avoid artificial additives. Oral healthcare providers generally recommend fluoride toothpaste due to its proven effectiveness but consider it important to approach patients with doubts or objections respectfully. By regularly asking about toothpaste use in a non-judgmental way, they are better able to a
