Passive stiffness characteristics and neutral zone quality of the scoliotic lumbar torso in the principle anatomical planes of motion.

BACKGROUND: The 1-10% prevalence rate of adult scoliosis frequently requires expensive therapy and surgical treatments and demands further research into the disease, especially with an aging population. Most studies examining the mechanics of scoliosis have focused on in vitro testing or computer simulations. This study quantitatively defined the passive stiffness properties of the in vivo scoliotic spine in three principle anatomical motions and identified differences relative to healthy controls. METHODS: Adult scoliosis (n = 14) and control (n = 17) participants with no history of spondylo

Predictors of Intrathoracic Injury after Blunt Torso Trauma in Children Presenting to an Emergency Department as Trauma Activations.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic injuries are a major cause of death associated with blunt trauma in children. Screening for injury with chest x-ray study, compared with chest computed tomography (CT) scan, has been controversial, weighing the benefits of specificity with the detriment of radiation exposure. OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of thoracic injury in children presenting as trauma activations to a Level I trauma center after blunt torso trauma, and to compare these predictors with those previously reported in the literature. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of pediatric pat

Quantifying air gap depth between the female anterior torso and soft body armor using handheld 3D scanning.

This study investigated the air gaps, or ease, between the anterior female torso and two types of soft body armor, planar and nonplanar, using a novel 3D torso scanning method. To account for differences in breast morphology, participants who were professionally fitted into B-, D-, and F-cup bras were recruited for the study. After an initial scan was taken in the bra, the subjects were scanned wearing each type of armor without any other base layers. The bra scan was overlaid with the armor scans and the difference between the two at six landmarks (left nipple, right nipple, midpoint between

Ultrasonic- and Ultrasound-assisted Improvement of Silhouette of the Torso: Bone Structure High-definition Remodeling (Part I).

BACKGROUND: High-definition liposculpture allowed plastic surgeons to achieve better aesthetic results by carving the underlying muscles and contours in a new way. Several authors have improved the original technique by adding other procedures and new technologies. We designed a new improvement by incorporating bone transformation surgery to overcome the lack of silhouette at the waist and, as a result, optimize the breast-waist-hip ratios. METHODS: We carried out a prospective multicenter study, with five different surgeons performing the same rib remodeling technique for waist definition. W

Effects of Wearable Lumbar Support Exoskeleton on Motion of Torso and Dynamic Plantar Pressure in Single-Shoulder Load.

Work-related musculoskeletal disorders are a major health issue, but there is little research to show whether active lumbar exoskeletons are suitable for single-shoulder load. The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of wearable lumbar support exoskeleton with single-shoulder load on movement of the lumbar and thoracic spine and plantar pressure. The experiment was conducted considering ten healthy male young adults. Data about three-dimensional motion angles of the lumbar and thoracic spine, as well as plantar pressure, were collected in the control condition (0% of body weight: 0

Obtaining patient torso geometry for the design of scoliosis braces. A study of the accuracy and repeatability of handheld 3D scanners.

OBJECTIVE: Obtaining patient geometry is crucial in scoliosis brace design for patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Advances in 3D scanning technologies provide the opportunity to obtain patient geometries quickly with fewer resources during the design process compared with the plaster-cast method. This study assesses the accuracy and repeatability of such technologies for this application. METHODS: The accuracy and repeatability of three different handheld scanners and phone-photogrammetry was assessed using different mesh generation software. Twenty-four scans of a single subject'

The use of statistical modelling to identify important parameters for the shape of the torso following surgery for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

The surgical strategy in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) aims to recreate the symmetry of the torso. This requires the minimisation of both the size of the scoliosis and the angulation between the sides of the torso, along with the recreation of a normal thoracic kyphosis. This study uses predictive modelling to identify the significance of the value of the pre-operative parameters, and the change in the magnitude of the parameters as a result of an operation on the shape of the torso using the 'most prominent points'; two areas of maximum prominence on either side of the spine with x, y

Relative incidence of intracranial mass lesions and severe torso injury after accidental injury: implications for triage and management.

In a previous study of head injury patients we found that old age, low Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, pupillary inequality, and falls were significant predictors of intracranial mass lesions (IMLs). Injury to motor vehicle occupants was less likely to result in IML. The present study defines predictors of severe torso injury (STI) in 646 patients admitted to a trauma unit and compares these with predictors of IML obtained in the previous study. Tachycardia and low blood pressure were associated with an increased incidence of STI (p = 0.003, p = 0.0000). The incidence of STI in falls differed

Utilization of torso computed tomography for the evaluation of ground level falls: More imaging does not equal better care.

INTRODUCTION: Computed tomography (CT) of the chest (CTC), abdomen, and pelvis (CTAP) is common when assessing trauma patients in the emergency department. However, unnecessary imaging can expose patients to unneeded radiation and increase healthcare costs. Here, we characterize the use of torso CT imaging for the evaluation of ground level falls (GLF) at a single level 1 trauma center. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of all patients ≥18 years old presenting to a single level 1 trauma center with a GLF (1m or less) in 2015-2019. Data were obtained through chart revie

Computer based modeling of the congenital long-QT 2 syndrome in the Visible Man torso: from genes to ECG.

The congenital long-QT syndrome is commonly associated with a high risk for polymorphic ventricular tachy-cardia and sudden cardiac death. This is probably due to an intensification of the intrinsic heterogeneities present in ventricular myocardium. Increasing the electrophysiological heterogeneities amplifies the dispersion of repolarization which directly affects the morphology of the T wave in the ECG. The aim of this work is to investigate the effects of LQT2, a specific subtype of the long-QT syndrome (LQTS), on the Body Surface Potential Maps (BSPM) and the ECG. In this context a three-d

A Unified Approach to the Correction of Male Torso Deformities After Massive Weight Loss: A 443-Patient Consecutive Series.

Although numerous techniques have been described, standardized approaches for comprehensive male torso reconstruction remain limited. This study presents a unified approach integrating circumferential planning, chest reshaping, and abdominal contouring. A retrospective review was performed of 443 consecutive male MWL patients treated between 2018 and 2024. All patients underwent a standardized protocol combining posterior body lift, chest reduction/mastopexy, and either standard or fleur-de-lis (FDL) abdominoplasty. Preoperative planning incorporated Pascal's Rule of 16 for circumferential mar

Optical Imaging of Ventricular Action Potentials in a Torso Tank: A New Platform for Non-Invasive Electrocardiographic Imaging Validation.

Background: Non-invasive electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) is a promising tool to provide high-resolution panoramic imaging of cardiac electrical activity noninvasively from body surface potential measurements. Current experimental methods for ECGI validation are limited to comparison with unipolar electrograms and the relatively low spatial resolution of cardiac mapping arrays. We aim to develop a novel experimental set up combining a human shaped torso tank with high-resolution optical mapping allowing the validation of ECGI reconstructions. Methods: Langendorff-perfused pig hearts (n = 3)
