The interaction between different sensory modalities represents a crucial issue in the neuroscience of consciousness: when the processing of one modality is deficient, the concomitant presentation of stimuli of other spared modalities may sustain the restoration of the damaged sensory functions. In this regard, visual enhancement of touch may represent a viable tool in rehabilitating tactile disorders, yet the specific visual features mostly modulating the somatosensory experience remain unsettled. In this study, healthy subjects underwent a tactile detection task during the observation of vid

OBJECTIVE: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is one of the most important risk factors of diabetic foot ulcers, and early screening and treatment of DPN are crucial. The Ipswich Touch Test (IPTT) is a new method for screening for DPN and, compared with traditional methods, is more simple to operate and requires no equipment. However, the screening accuracy of IPTT in patients with DPN has not been well characterised. We aim to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to characterise the sensitivity and specificity of IPTT compared with traditional methods and to understand the potentia

BACKGROUND: In this work, we present a novel sensory substitution system that enables to learn three dimensional digital information via touch when vision is unavailable. The system is based on a mouse-shaped device, designed to jointly perceive, with one finger only, local tactile height and inclination cues of arbitrary scalar fields. The device hosts a tactile actuator with three degrees of freedom: elevation, roll and pitch. The actuator approximates the tactile interaction with a plane tangential to the contact point between the finger and the field. Spatial information can therefore be m

INTRODUCTION: Tactile-based quantitative sensory assessments have proven successful in differentiating concussed vs. non-concussed individuals. One potential advantage of this methodology is that an experimental animal model can be used to obtain neurophysiological recordings of the neural activity in the somatosensory cortex evoked in response to the same tactile stimuli that are used in human sensory assessments and establish parallels between various metrics of stimulus-evoked cortical activity and perception of the stimulus attributes.

The dramatic advances in efferent neural interfaces over the past decade are remarkable, with cortical signals used to allow paralyzed patients to control the movement of a prosthetic limb or even their own hand. However, this success has thrown into relief, the relative lack of progress in our ability to restore somatosensation to these same patients. Somatosensation, including proprioception, the sense of limb position and movement, plays a crucial role in even basic motor tasks like reaching and walking. Its loss results in crippling deficits. Historical work dating back decades and even ce

We studied the role of rat whisker/snout tactile sense during oral grasping, comparing control data with those obtained, respectively, 1-3 and 5-7 days after bilateral long or short whisker trimming and 3-5 and 8-10 days after bilateral infraorbital nerve (ION) severing. Two behavioural phases were identified: whisker-snout contact by nose-N or lip-L and snout-tongue contact. The second phase involved either: snout passing over stationary pellet (Still pellet); pellet rolling as the snout passed over it (Rolling pellet); pellet being pushed forward by the snout (Pushed pellet); or pellet being

Excessive touching and picking of one's skin are core symptoms of skin-picking disorder (SPD). Previous research has shown that patients with SPD display difficulties in motor control and show altered reward responsivity. Considering the limited knowledge about neuronal mechanisms in SPD, particularly concerning the cerebellum, the analysis focused on this brain region due to its involvement in sensorimotor and affective functions. The participants of the present study received affective (caress-like), which is typically perceived as pleasant and can be passively enjoyed. A total of 132 female

A key feature of Anorexia Nervosa is body image disturbances, the study of which has focused mainly on visual and attitudinal aspects, did not always contain homogeneous groups of patients, and/or did not evaluate body shape concerns of the control group. In this study, we used psychophysical methods to investigate the visual, tactile and bimodal perception of elliptical shapes in a group of patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) restricting type and two groups of healthy participants, which differed from each other by the presence of concerns about their own bodies. We used an experimental parad

In thalamic lesions a pseudocortical syndrome has been occasionally described but the effect of the lesion on the cortical network of tactile recognition has never been studied. We report a patient who developed tactile agnosia in the left hand after right thalamic stroke, configuring a pseudocortical sensory syndrome. The discriminative sensory dysfunction was dissociate because only tactile agnosia and mild pseudoathetosis were present. A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study showed that tactile recognition with the unaffected hand recruited a bilateral fronto-parietal network.

Acute improvement of sensory functions in the contralateral hand during experimental, tourniquet-induced anaesthesia has been described. Tourniquet compression over an extended time period, however, may be painful - which may influence the result. To study the effects of deafferentation of the upper extremity with the pain factor eliminated, we investigated 100 patients with anaesthetised axillary plexus for perception of touch and tactile discrimination in the contralateral (unanaesthetised) hand. Anaesthesia induced a rapid, significant, improvement in tactile discrimination in the contralat

Paying attention to sounds and touches at the same time is demanding. New research shows how the parietal lobe of the human brain mediates multisensory perception of stimulus frequency and intensity.

The patterns of sensory loss in 29 cases of Juxta pontine trigeminal rhizotomy are reported. The section of 70% of the portio major gave a similar impairment of tactile, thermal and pain sensibility in the facial area corresponding to the portio of the nerve section in all the patients. These findings do not support Jannetta and Rand's statement that partial to complete section of the porto major at the pons with complete preservation of the intermediate fibre does not affect the perception of light touch. The reported data suggest: 1--intermediate fibres are not mode specific fibres for light

Visually observing a touch quickly reveals who is being touched, how it might feel, and the broader social or emotional context, shaping our interpretation of such interactions. Investigating these dimensions is essential for understanding how tactile experiences are processed individually and how we empathise with observed sensations in others. Here, we expand available resources for studying visually perceived touch by providing a wide-ranging set of dynamic interactions that specifically focus on the sensory qualities of touch. The Validated Touch-Video Database (VTD) consists of a set of 9

Change in theoretical framework over the last decades and recent research in pediatric physiotherapy, has created a debate surrounding therapeutic touch. What is the role of or is there a need for handling and hands-on facilitated guidance (facilitation)? Does it limit and/or interfere with children's learning and development? It is frequently argued that therapeutic touch represents a passive and/or static approach that restricts disabled children's participation during interaction and activity in clinical encounters leading to decreased home, school and community participation. Touch may eve

Touch has an emotional and communicative meaning, and it plays a crucial role in social perception and empathy. The intuitive link between others' somatosensations and our sense of touch becomes ostensible in mirror-touch synesthesia, a condition in which the view of a touch on another person's body elicits conscious tactile sensations on the observer's own body [1]. This peculiar phenomenon may implicate normal social mirror mechanisms [2]. Here, we show that mirror-touch interference effects, synesthesia-like sensations, and even phantom touches can be induced in nonsynesthetes by priming th

Combined auditory and tactile stimuli have been found to enhance speech-in-noise perception both in individuals with normal hearing and in those with hearing loss. While behavioral benefits of audio-tactile enhancements in speech understanding have been repeatedly demonstrated, the impact of vibrotactile cues on cortical auditory speech processing remains unknown. Using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with a dense montage setup, we first identified a region-of-interest highly sensitive to auditory-only speech-in-quiet. In the same region, we then assessed the change in activity (

Recent studies extended the classical view that touch is mainly devoted to the perception of the external world. Perceptual tasks where the hand was stationary demonstrated that cutaneous stimuli from contact with objects provide the illusion of hand displacement. Here, we tested the hypothesis that touch provides auxiliary proprioceptive feedback for guiding actions. We used a well-established perceptual phenomenon to dissociate the estimates of reaching direction from touch and musculoskeletal proprioception. Participants slid their fingertip on a ridged plate to move toward a target without

The gate control theory (GCT) of pain proposes that pain- and touch-sensing neurons antagonize each other through spinal cord dorsal horn (DH) gating neurons. However, the exact neural circuits underlying the GCT remain largely elusive. Here, we identified a new population of deep layer DH (dDH) inhibitory interneurons that express the receptor tyrosine kinase Ret neonatally. These early RET+ dDH neurons receive excitatory as well as polysynaptic inhibitory inputs from touch- and/or pain-sensing afferents. In addition, they negatively regulate DH pain and touch pathways through both pre- and p

In the oral cavity, oral stereognosis and chemesthesis refer to the abilities to recognize shapes and detect noxious substances, respectively, through various receptors distributed on the tongue. The absence of standardized methods to assess oral somatosensory perception has led to a lack of consensus regarding the relationship between taste and trigeminal sensations. While some studies reported lower trigeminal perception in taste disorders, others did not confirm this correlation. To analyze somatosensation in quantitative and qualitative taste problems, 28 patients (21 females, mean age 59.

How do we come to sense that a hand in view belongs to our own body or not? Previous studies have suggested that the integration of vision and somatosensation in the frontoparietal areas plays a critical role in the sense of body ownership (i.e., the multisensory perception of limbs and body parts as our own). However, little is known about how these areas implement the multisensory integration process at the computational level and whether activity predicts illusion elicitation in individual participants on a trial-by-trial basis. To address these questions, we used functional magnetic resona
