Evidence for the influence of trace elements on disease resistance in ruminants is reviewed with emphasis on susceptibility to infection in vivo during the more common deficiencies (copper, selenium and cobalt). Copper deficiency associated with increases in pasture molybdenum increased the susceptibility of lambs to microbial infections. Under experimental conditions, dietary molybdenum decreased the establishment of abomasal and intestinal nematodes but not their pathogenicity to lambs. Molybdenum may enhance inflammatory responses leading to parasite rejection by the host. Decreased inciden

Thirty-one male SD rats, six weeks old, were fed a trace element-deficient diet for two weeks and then divided into three groups and maintained for 1 week as follows: group A with total parenteral nutrition (TPN) without supplementation of trace elements, group B with TPN supplemented with the following 5 trace elements ... iron, zinc, copper, manganese and iodine, and group C with a diet free of the above five trace elements. Another group of eight rats was fed a diet supplemented with the above five trace elements for three weeks as a control (group D). Feeding or TPN without supplementation

We assessed the trace metal status of 10 children (3.5 to 13.3 yr) with phenylketonuria (PKU) who were successively treated for at least 6 months with a semi-synthetic formula restricted in phenylalanine, then for 6 months with a reformulated formula. The reformulated product contained higher concentrations of magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) and lower concentrations of calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), and unsaturated fats. Diet records, blood samples, and urine specimens were collected from each subject. Mean intakes of Mg, K, and Zn increased significantl

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is a recurrent, nonscarring type of hair loss considered to be an autoimmune process. Though its etiopathology is not fully understood, there are claims that imbalance of trace elements may trigger the onset of AA.
AIM: The aim of the present study was to assess the levels of zinc, copper, and magnesium in the serum of AA patients.
METHODS: Fifty AA patients (34 men and 16 women), and fifty age and sex matched healthy control subjects were studied. Samples were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrometric methods.
RESULTS: Serum zinc levels were significan

Data concerning trace element concentrations in both abiotic and biotic components of the Antarctic ecosystems are summarized here to be used as a first background database for pollution detection. Antarctic ancient ice and snow cores have been used to assess past and present-day changes in global atmospheric levels of certain trace elements. Concentrations of Pb, Cd, and Hg in the Antarctic tropospheric cell have varied according to glacial and interglacial periods before humans began to contaminate the atmosphere with these metals. Based on data of Pb concentrations in the Antarctic ancient

Apart from the essential trace element iodine, which is the central constituent of thyroid hormones, a second essential trace element, selenium, is required for appropriate thyroid hormone synthesis, activation and metabolism. The human thyroid gland has the highest selenium content per gram of tissue among all organs. Several selenocysteine-containing proteins respectively enzymes are functionally expressed in the thyroid, mainly in thyrocytes themselves: three forms of glutathione peroxidases (cGPx, pGPx, and PH-GPx), the type I 5-deiodinase, thioredoxin reductase and selenoprotein P. Trace elements like copper, zinc, iron and selenium have a significant influence on the function of the immune system. We studied plasma levels of trace elements in 53 patients with acute bacterial and viral infections. In bacterial infections (septicaemia, pneumonia, erysipelas and meningitis) the plasma concentrations of selenium, iron and zinc were decreased. Plasma copper was unchanged in patients with erysipelas, but increased in other types of bacterial infections. Although the patients with viral infections showed similar shifts of the trace elements as were observed in patients with ba

There are substantial differences in the reported elemental composition of human nails. Most investigators have used extensive washing procedures to minimize environmental contamination, however, such washing poses the risk of extraction of elements bound to the nail matrix. To determine if a portion of this variability could be accounted for by the "washing solutions" used by different investigators, nails were washed in nine solvents previously used for cleaning nails and their residual elemental composition measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy or energy dispersion analysis. In general

Zinc is a necessary trace element and an important constituent of proteins and other biological molecules. It has many biological functions, including antioxidant, skin and mucous membrane integrity maintenance, and the promotion of various enzymatic and transcriptional responses. The skin contains the third most zinc in the organism. Zinc deficiency can lead to a range of skin diseases. Except for acrodermatitis enteropathic, a rare genetic zinc deficiency, it has also been reported in other diseases. In recent years, zinc supplementation has been widely used for various skin conditions, incl

Zinc is one of the most important trace elements. Zinc deficiency is a major health problem worldwide. Causes of zinc deficiency can be nutritional, iatrogenic, genetic or a result of diseases. Severe zinc deficiency results in symptoms like pustular dermatitis, alopecia, weight loss, diarrhoea, infections secondary to immune dysfunction, hypogonadism and problems in ulcer healing. Zinc supplementation is necessary in cases of zinc deficiency, but high doses zinc supplementation through a long time can result in copper deficiency or anaemia. Thus a rational use of zinc supplementation in the r

Trace elements are inorganic constituents of the human body present in concentrations less than 50mg/kg body weight. An exception is iron that is found in slightly higher amounts, 60 mg/kg body weight, but it is classified within this category due to its physiological roles. Requirements of trace elements can vary according to age, gender, growth, body composition, genetics, pregnancy, lactation, wound healing and burns, alcohol abuse, infections, and diseases (anemia, coronary artery, Keshan, Kashin-Beck). Additionally, interactions may occur with dietary factors, such as other minerals (iron

Nowadays, 70 % of global monogastric feeds contains an exogenous phytase. Phytase supplementation has enabled a more efficient utilisation of phytate phosphorous (P) and reduction of P pollution. Trace minerals, such as iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) are essential for maintaining health and immunity as well as being involved in animal growth, production and reproduction. Exogenous sources of phytase and trace elements are regularly supplemented to monogastric diets and usually combined in a premix. However, the possibility for negative interaction between individual compo

Patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis (HD) are potentially at risk of deficiency and excess of trace elements. HD exposes patients to large volumes of water (>120 l/week) in the form of dialysate. Although levels of certain ions (such as potassium and calcium) are carefully regulated in dialysate, many others are measured infrequently, if ever. As a result, substances in lower concentrations in the dialysis may be leached from the body. Conversely, toxic trace elements present in water but not in blood may accumulate and cause toxicity. Given that essential trace element

We have described herein various skin diseases which are caused by essential trace element deposition, deficiency, allergy, etc. Pigmentation of hemochromatosis and hemosiderosis are recognized by hemosiderin deposition in the dermis. Acrodermatitis enteropathica is caused by a deficiency of Zn and is classified as either a hereditary type or as an acquired type. The former is autosomal recessive and the latter is caused by a low intake of Zn. Wilson's disease and Menkes' kinky hair syndrome, which are caused by abnormal Cu metabolism, elicit hyperpigmentation and morphological changes of the

Trace elements occur in the body in very small or 'trace' amounts. Deficiencies of essential trace elements produce multiple and diverse clinical signs and symptoms. These may arise from inadequate dietary intake, decreased bioavailability, iatrogenic factors, certain disease states in which decreased absorption, excessive excretion and/or utilization occurs, and physiological states in which trace element requirements are increased and/or body stores are reduced. This review discusses both the static and functional laboratory tests used for the assessment of chromium, copper, selenium, and zi

Genetic disorders of trace element transport are now known in humans, mice, dogs and cattle. Those involving copper have been known longest and are best known clinically. Effects due to copper deficiency are seen in Menkes' disease, in X-linked cutis laxa and in the X-linked series of mottled mutants in the mouse. Copper accumulation is also harmful, causing damage initially to the liver and later to the kidneys and brain in Wilson's disease, in some Bedlington terriers and in toxic milk mice. Zinc deficiency is seen in acrodermatitis enteropathica and in premature babies born to women who see

The ageing process is associated with alterations of systemic trace element (TE) homeostasis increasing the risk, e.g. neurodegenerative diseases. Here, the impact of long-term modulation of dietary intake of copper, iron, selenium, and zinc was investigated in murine cerebellum. Four- and 40-wk-old mice of both sexes were supplied with different amounts of those TEs for 26 wk. In an adequate supply group, TE concentrations were in accordance with recommendations for laboratory mice while suboptimally supplied animals received only limited amounts of copper, iron, selenium, and zinc. An additi
