Visual evoked potentials and pulse wave velocity in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Data about the effects of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) on various functions of the nervous and cardiovascular systems are limited. In this study, the visual neuronal and cardiovascular functions of patients with IBD were evaluated by measuring visual evoked potentials (VEP) and pulse wave velocity (PWV), respectively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: There were three study groups: the Crohn's disease (CD) group (n=25), the ulcerative colitis (UC) group (n=30), and a healthy control (C) group (n=25). The exclusion criteria were as follows: patients with IBD were in remission, had no

In Vitro Evaluation of Upstream and Downstream Influences on Blood Pressure of the Hybrid Treatment of Thoracoabdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

BACKGROUND: The aim of our study was to assess, by means of an experimental model, whether different geometries in retrograde bypass and stent-graft deployment may affect upstream and downstream blood pressure in hybrid treatment. METHODS: An in vitro model of the arterial circulation has been prepared, which consists of a peristaltic pump, silicon tubes with geometrical and mechanical properties close to realistic arteries, a terminal reservoir kept at constant pressure, and a sequence of pressure transducers. The system allows us to study the pressure wave propagation in physiological condi

Juke Stick: A Case of Pediatric Atraumatic Compartment Syndrome.

Compartment syndrome is usually due to trauma but can also have atraumatic causes. It is defined as a compromise of neurovascular and muscle function that presents symptomatically with the six P's: pain, pallor, paresthesia, paralysis, poikilothermia, and pulselessness. Diagnosis is confirmed by a delta pressure of <30 mmHg (diastolic blood pressure minus the compartment pressure). This case details a 15-year-old male football player with atraumatic compartment syndrome in the lateral compartment of the right lower leg. Symptoms of swelling and pain began 2 weeks before presentation after the

Use of standard musculoskeletal ultrasound to determine the need for fasciotomy in an elevated muscle compartment pressure cadaver leg model.

INTRODUCTION: Acute compartment syndrome (ACS) is a limb-threatening condition often associated with leg injury. The only treatment of ACS is fasciotomy with the purpose of reducing muscle compartment pressures (MCP). Patient discomfort and low reliability of invasive MCP measurements, has led to the search for alternative methods. Our goal was to test the feasibility of using ultrasound to diagnose elevated MCP. METHODS: A cadaver model of elevated MCPs was used in 6 cadaver legs. An ultrasound transducer was combined with a pressure sensing transducer to obtain a B-mode image of the anterio

Pleural manometry-historical background, rationale for use and methods of measurement.

Subatmospheric pleural pressure (Ppl), which is approximately -3 to -5 cmH2O at functional residual capacity (FRC) makes pleura a unique organ in the human body. The negative Ppl is critical for maintaining the lungs in a properly inflated state and for proper blood circulation within the thorax. Significant and sudden pleural pressure changes associated with major pleural pathologies, as well as therapeutic interventions may be associated with life-threatening complications. The pleural pressure may show two different values depending on the measurement method applied. These are called pleura

Diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea using a portable transducer catheter.

As an initial step in simplifying the diagnosis of sleep apnea with a view toward using portable equipment in the home setting, we examined the efficacy of a portable transducer catheter that measures intrathoracic pressure. This catheter, connected to a miniature data-logger, can be introduced nasally into the airway, and the data so collected can be acquired, stored, and analyzed off-line. We tested this catheter against standard nocturnal polysomnography in 10 patients suffering from obstructive sleep apnea. We found that by using a combination of the raw pressure signal and an envelope pre

Anorectal manometry in the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease in adults.

Anorectal manometry is a useful tool in evaluating the cause of chronic constipation and is reliable in the diagnosis of Hirschsprung's disease. Two adult patients ages 35 and 69 with constipation since birth underwent anorectal manometry. Balloons positioned at the internal and external anal sphincters were connected to pressure transducers and their responses to a distention of rectal balloon were recorded. Both patients demonstrated failure of relaxation of the internal anal sphincter which is characteristic of Hirschsprung's disease. This diagnosis was confirmed at surgery by histologic ex

Development and modelling of arterial applanation tonometry: a review.

Arterial tonometry allows non-invasive and continuous registration of the arterial pressure waveform, by applanating (flattening) a superficial artery supported by bone with an external transducer. Inspired by ocular tonometry used for eye disease diagnosis, G.L. Pressman and P.M. Newgard built the first arterial tonometer in 1963, and derived a discrete, linear mechanical model. Accuracy remained poor until new sensor production techniques (silicon technology) arrived. G.M. Drzewiecki et al. published a second, more elaborate theoretical model for tonometer positioning in 1983. Few years late

The effect of conductive hearing loss on the masking-level difference: insert versus standard earphones.

Previous studies have indicated that the masking-level difference is reduced in listeners having conductive hearing loss, even when sensation level is controlled. According to the crosstalk hypothesis, this deficit can be explained in terms of reduced binaural cues at the level of the cochleas, due to acoustic contributions from the bone conduction route. It is possible that such a deficit can be overcome through the use of insert earphones, because such transducers provide a high degree of interaural attenuation. In this study, NoSo and NoS tau thresholds were measured in normal-hearing subje

Ultrasonic sensor concept to fit a ventricular assist device cannula evaluated using geometrically accurate heart phantoms.

Future left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) are expected to respond to the physiologic need of patients; however, they still lack reliable pressure or volume sensors for feedback control. In the clinic, echocardiography systems are routinely used to measure left ventricular (LV) volume. Until now, echocardiography in this form was never integrated in LVADs due to its computational complexity. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the applicability of a simplified ultrasonic sensor to fit an LVAD cannula and to show the achievable accuracy in vitro. Our approach requires only two ultrason

Human and Porcine Marginal Chordal Forces in a Vacuum Based Physiological In Vitro Mitral Valve Model.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to quantitatively investigate the role of marginal chordae of the mitral valve during static closure by analyzing the force within these chordae and its potential correlation with the transvalvular pressure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Porcine (n = 10) and human (n = 4) mitral valves were mounted in a saddle-shaped annulus clamp, while an in vitro system was utilized to replicate a physiological systolic blood pressure by vacuum pressure applied to the atrial side of the valve. A Millar pressure catheter and force transducers ("C-gauges") were used to acquire the dat

Monosodium urate test: a new analgesic test by crystal-induced monoarthritis in rats.

The analgesic effects of various agents were evaluated in knee joint monoarthritic rats where arthritis was induced by monosodium urate (MSU) crystals injected into the knee joint cavities. The weight supported by each hind limb was measured quantitatively using pressure transducers, which revealed dose-dependent recovery produced by various analgesics including morphine but no changes in value by sedatives such as chlorpromazine. Relative potency obtained from the value of ED50 of each analgesic agent was congruent with that in clinical use. The MSU test may be quite suitable for quantitative

1980 Volvo award in biomechanics. Measurement of the distribution of axial stress on the end-plate of the vertebral body.

The distribution of axial stress on the end-plate of the vertebral body has been measured by the aid of miniature piezoelectric pressure transducers in specimens of motion segments of the human vertebral column. The results indicate that the stress distribution depends essentially on the state of degeneration of the intervertebral disc and on the relative position of the adjacent end-plates. Furthermore lumbar and thoracic motion segments show a different behaviour. The measured results relate to the problem of the stress dependent deformation of the growing vertebra, the codfish shape of the

The accuracy of 2 clinically used techniques and a pressure tip catheter for measuring intravesicular pressure in a canine cadaveric model of intra-abdominal hypertension.

When persistent or severe, intra-abdominal hypertension can evolve into abdominal compartment syndrome if timely therapeutic intervention is not rendered. Such interventions rely heavily on dependable, accurate monitoring of intra-abdominal pressure. The most reliable way to monitor intra-abdominal pressure in small animals is by indirectly measuring intravesicular pressure. The objective of this study was to compare the water manometry, external pressure transducer (ExtT), and pressure tip catheter techniques for their accuracy in measuring intravesicular pressure against a known intra-abdomi

Same Session Validation of a Custom-Built 22G With the Commercial 25G System for EUS-Guided Portal Pressure Gradient Measurement.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided portal pressure gradient (EUS-PPG) measurement is a promising alternative to hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) assessment, especially in settings where HVPG is unavailable or limited. The commercial 25-gauge (25G) system showed good correlation with the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG). However, the 25G has drawbacks due to its small caliber and the proprietary pressure transducer. The aim of this study was to validate a custom-built 22G conventional intravascular pressure transducer system (22G EUS-PPG). METHODS: In this prospect

Metoclopramide fails to suppress linguopharyngeal events in a rat dyskinesia model.

The effects of metoclopramide on ketamine-induced linguopharyngeal events exemplified by tongue retrusions, protrusions, and swallowing acts were tested in ketamine-anesthetized rats mounted on a stereotaxic frame with the tip of the tongue tied to a force displacement transducer to monitor retrusion and protrusion and a pressure transducer inserted into the mouth at the level of the soft palate to monitor swallowing. Metoclopramide at doses ranging from 0.5 to 50 mg/kg im failed to decrease protrusions, retrusions, or swallowing. It rather increased all three events for up to 2.5 hours. The s

Canal pressures before, during, and after endoscopic release for idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.

A special transducer was used to measure in situ carpal tunnel pressures in 20 patients who had surgery for idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) by one-portal endoscopic section of the flexor retinaculum. Pressures were elevated initially. The pressures were maximal (mean, 93 mm Hg) with full passive wrist extension. Peaks of high pressures, on average 97 mm Hg, were recorded with the Agee (MicroAire, Charlottesville, VA) endoscopic device in the canal. Release of the endoscopic flexor retinaculum resulted in a marked decrease of the pressures.

Oropharyngeal and esophageal pressure during mono- and binasal CPAP in neonates.

Oropharyngeal and esophageal pressures were measured via a tip-transducer during mono- and binasal CPAP in 30 neonates. During nasal CPAP, increasing flows are followed by an increase in oropharyngeal pressure, although there were great variations among the pressures recorded. On the other hand, no increase in the esophageal pressure could be registered during nasal CPAP. It is advisable to use the lowest flow which ameliorates the respiratory status in neonates. To achieve an appropriate pressure in the oropharynx it is advisable to close the mouth during nasal CPAP in the neonate.
