Strategies implemented to increase HPV vaccine uptake and confidence among men who have sex with men and transgender people: A systematic review.

Men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender persons are disproportionately affected by HPV-related disease. The HPV vaccine effectively prevents infection, but vaccine uptake remains suboptimal in this group. Thus, this systematic review aimed to synthesize the literature on interventions and strategies implemented to increase HPV vaccine confidence and uptake among MSM and transgender persons. Six databases were searched in May 2025. We assessed risk of bias and extracted and descriptively summarized key data through narrative synthesis and content analysis. Sixteen articles reporting on

Health Implications of Housing Assignments for Incarcerated Transgender Women.

Transgender women (i.e., persons who were assigned male sex at birth but who live and identify as female) experience forms of discrimination that limit their access to stable housing and contribute to high rates of incarceration; once incarcerated, the approaches used to assign them housing within the jail or prison place them at risk for abuse, rape, and other outcomes. Yet, a paucity of studies explores the implications of carceral housing assignments for transgender women.Whether the approaches used to assign housing in jails and prisons violate the rights of incarcerated transgender person

The current status of transgender health education in doctor of pharmacy curricula in North America.

Doctor of pharmacy programs across the country strive to prepare culturally competent pharmacy professionals who are trained to provide compassionate and evidence-based care to a variety of patients. Within the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education 2016 Standards and Key Elements for the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree, pharmacy schools are charged with the task of developing professionals who can identify and diminish health care disparities. Transgender persons represent one of the most underrepresented and underserved communities within the modern health care system, yet very little inform

Should Clinicians Care About How Food Behaviors Express Gender Identity?

The nutrition care process (NCP) accounts for a person's biological sex characteristics but does not adequately address their gender. Yet dietary choices express one's social identity in ethically and clinically relevant ways. Persons identifying as men tend to eat meat more frequently, consume more meat, and are less likely to be vegetarian than persons identifying as women, for example. Research on transgender persons' diets suggests that food is one means of expressing gender identity; this article argues that an inclusive sex- and gender-informed approach can likely improve the NCP's usefu

A novel method for estimating transgender status using electronic medical records.

PURPOSE: We describe a novel algorithm for identifying transgender people and determining their male-to-female (MTF) or female-to-male (FTM) identity in electronic medical records of an integrated health system. METHODS: A computer program scanned Kaiser Permanente Georgia electronic medical records from January 2006 through December 2014 for relevant diagnostic codes, and presence of specific keywords (e.g., "transgender" or "transsexual") in clinical notes. Eligibility was verified by review of de-identified text strings containing targeted keywords, and if needed, by an additional in-depth

Assessing and Addressing the Risk of Venous Thromboembolism Across the Spectrum of Gender Affirming Care: A Review.

OBJECTIVE: Accumulating evidence demonstrates that gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) improves mental health outcomes in transgender persons. Data specific to the risks associated with GAHT for transgender persons continue to emerge, allowing for improvements in understanding, predicting, and mitigating adverse outcomes while informing discussion about desired effects. Of particular concern is the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in the context of both longitudinal GAHT and the perioperative setting. Combining what is known about the risk of VTE in cisgender individuals on hormone the

Growth into manhood: identity development among female-to-male transgender youth.

This study aims to understand the process by which female-to-male transgender young people come to identify as transgender through in-depth interviews with 13 self-identified female-to-male transgender youth. A grounded theory was created of the process that young people go through in coming to identify as transgender. We identified three stages: (1) a growing sense of gender: school, puberty, sexuality and exposure to diverse gender options impact upon each young person's sense of his own gender; (2) recognition of transgender identity: a young person experiences a growing sense of discomfort

Creating environments of care with transgender communities.

Partnerships between transgender individuals and community health nurses have been a primary source of monitoring and responding to the impact of the HIV epidemic on transgender communities, specifically transgender women. This article provides two perspectives: first, from a transgender service provider, and second, from a public health nurse, on forming partnerships that brought consumers and providers together to create environments of care in which many transgender persons living with and at high risk of HIV were able to engage with medical providers who believed in their right to self-det

Aggression changes during masculinizing and feminizing gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) - A prospective clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: Testosterone and aggression have been positively associated, but it remains unclear whether gender-affirming hormone therapy (GAHT)-induced testosterone changes affect aggression in transgender persons. This study investigates aggression changes and associations between aggression and testosterone, depression, and anxiety during the first year of GAHT. METHODS: Alternative-Short-Aggression-Questionnaire scores were assessed in transmasculine and transfeminine adults at baseline, six weeks, and one year post-GAHT initiation. Cisgender men and women were the comparison groups. Lin

Care of the Transgender Patient.

Transgender persons are a diverse group whose gender identity differs from their sex recorded at birth. Some choose to undergo medical treatment to align their physical appearance with their gender identity. Barriers to accessing appropriate and culturally competent care contribute to health disparities in transgender persons, such as increased rates of certain types of cancer, substance abuse, mental health conditions, infections, and chronic diseases. Thus, it is important that clinicians understand the specific medical issues that are relevant to this population.

The "double punishment" of transgender prisoners: a human rights-based commentary on placement and conditions of detention.

PURPOSE: The incarceration of transgender people is described as a "double punishment" based on lack of gender recognition and ability to gender affirm, and with their experiences and conditions in prison tantamount to torture. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the continued "double punishment" of incarcerated transgender people (in particular trans-women) and identify and describe breaches in human and gender rights and minimum standards of care. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: There is limited global data on the numbers of incarcerated transgender people, an identified vulnerable pris

Using ENGAGED for CHANGE to Develop a Multicultural Intervention to Reduce Disparities among Sexual and Gender Minorities in Appalachia.

BACKGROUND: Gay, bisexual, queer, and other men who have sex with men (GBQMSM) and transgender persons in Appalachia are at an increased risk for HIV, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), hepatitis C virus (HCV), mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) and are less likely to use prevention and care services. OBJECTIVES: Our community-based participatory research partnership sought to develop an intervention to increase use of HIV, STI, HCV, and mpox prevention and care services among diverse GBQMSM and transgender and nonbinary persons living in rural Appalachia. METHODS: We used ENGAGED for C

Contraception across the transmasculine spectrum.

The field of transgender health continues to expand rapidly, including research in the area of family planning. While much attention has been given to fertility preservation and the parenting intentions of transgender individuals, far less has been paid to pregnancy prevention and contraceptive needs of people along the transmasculine gender spectrum (transgender men and gender-nonbinary persons who were assigned female at birth). Existing research illustrates that many clinicians and transmasculine individuals falsely believe that there is no risk of pregnancy while amenorrheic. These studies

Trends in incidence of HIV and other sexually transmissible infections among transgender people in Australia: a retrospective 10-year national clinical cohort study.

BACKGROUND: In Australia, transgender people have largely been excluded from public health surveillance for HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs). We aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of HIV and STIs among transgender people in Australia, including to investigate trends over time and risk factors. METHODS: A retrospective clinical cohort study was conducted using 10 years of health record data (between Jan 1, 2014, and Dec 31, 2023) from 87 health services across Australia. A primary transgender cohort and two comparative cisgender cohorts (gay and bisexual men, and h

Transgender HIV prevention: a qualitative needs assessment.

Although clinical experience and preliminary research suggest that some transgender people are at significant risk for HIV, this stigmatized group has so far been largely ignored in HIV prevention. As part of the development of HIV prevention education targeting the transgender population, focus groups of selected transgender individuals assessed their HIV risks and prevention needs. Data were gathered in the following four areas: (1) the impact of HIV/AIDS on transgender persons; (2) risk factors; (3) information and services needed; and (4) recruitment strategies. Findings indicated that HIV
