Incidence and Pitfalls of Adipose Tissue Encountered in Urinary Bladder Biopsy/Transurethral Resection Specimens.

Despite the College of American Pathologists' recommendation against diagnosing "fat invasion" in urinary bladder biopsies and transurethral resection of bladder tumor specimens (TURBT), some pathologists still consider this scenario as pathologic stage T3. However, a formal evaluation of fat in biopsies/TURBT has not been performed. Material obtained from TURBT is considered as clinical staging (cT) and that obtained from cystectomy is true pathologic staging (pT). Herein, we analyze adipose tissue incidence/distribution, cancer involving fat, staging ramifications, and clinical outcomes in a

[Transurethral resection and buccal mucosal graft for the treatment of refractory bladder neck contracture].

Bladder neck contracture after prostate surgery is a rare but feared complication. The treatment of choice is endoscopic incision or resection of fibrotic tissue. In case of ineffective transurethral correction, bladder neck reconstruction has to be done. In this report, we present a complicated case treated with combined transurethral and laparoscopic bladder neck reconstruction with buccal mucosal graft inlay. Using retrograde endoscopy fibrotic tissue in the bladder neck was resected to achieve a smooth and wide prostate cavity. After that the laparoscopy performed. The retropubic space is

Factors Associated with Urethral and Bladder Neck Stricture After Transurethral Resection of the Prostate.

Introduction: Urethral and bladder neck stricture (U/BNS) is a complication that occurs in up to 9% of patients following transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). The most relevant risk factors reported are prolonged surgical duration and prostatic volume. The purpose of this study is to analyze risk factors associated with the development of U/BNS following TURP. Materials and Methods: Case-control study. Population: patients who underwent TURP. Cases: patients with U/BNS following TURP, diagnosed between January 2010 and December 2018. We included patients with obstructive symptoms af

Value of repeat radical transurethral resection for selected patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and necessity of repeat transurethral resection (re-TUR) treatment for selected patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer and to investigate the possibility of bladder sparing. METHODS: The study included 61 selected patients with invasive bladder cancer who were treated by re-TUR and in whom biopsies of the muscle layer of the tumour bed were negative. Re-TUR was performed within 4-6 weeks of the initial resection. Pirarubicin instillation was scheduled for the bladder-preserving group. The prognosis was compared with that of p

Preoperative selective arterial embolization followed by transurethral resection of bladder tumor for large bladder tumors: Early clinical experiences.

PURPOSE: Transurethral resection of bladder tumor for large tumors (≥5 cm) is challenging, even for experienced surgeons, due to increased risks of transfusion, bladder perforation, and incomplete resection. We developed a sequential strategy involving preoperative selective arterial embolization (SAE) followed by transurethral resection to address these challenges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated patients who underwent preoperative SAE followed by transurethral resection for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer at two tertiary hospitals between 2021 and 2024. Renin-Angiotensin Inhibitors Decrease Recurrence after Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor in Patients with Nonmuscle Invasive Bladder Cancer.

PURPOSE: Prior reports suggest that renin-angiotensin system inhibition may decrease nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer recurrence. We evaluated whether angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker treatment at initial surgery was associated with decreased recurrence or progression in patients with nonmuscle invasive bladder cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an institutional bladder cancer database we identified 340 patients with data available on initial transurethral resection of bladder tumor. Progression was defined as an increase to stage T2. Cox proportional

Intravesical explosion during transurethral resection of bladder tumor: a case report and literature review.

Intravesical explosion represents an extremely rare yet hazardous complication during transurethral resection of bladder tumors. Given that severe intravesical explosion can lead to bladder rupture, which requires further surgical intervention and even poses a potential threat to patients' life safety, this complication deserves heightened clinical attention. Herein, we present an 82-year-old male patient admitted for gross hematuria, dysuria, frequent micturition and urgent micturition lasting over 20 days. Pelvic CT revealed a 43 mm × 30 mm irregular mass on the left side of the bladder dome

Utility of restaging transurethral resection in patients with primary high-grade Ta bladder cancer.

PURPOSE: International guidelines present discrepancies concerning restaging transurethral resection (TURBT) for high-grade (HG) Ta bladder cancer. Recent studies with heterogeneous inclusion criteria have reported discordant results regarding its benefits. Our study aimed to assess the prognostic impact of restaging TURBT in patients with HG Ta that was fully resected during the initial TURBT. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study involved patients with HG Ta. Patients with a history of urothelial carcinoma ≥ HG Ta, macroscopically incomplete resection, or the absence of detrusor m

Strategies to Improve Clinical Outcomes and Patient Experience Undergoing Transurethral Resection of Bladder Tumor.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To describe patient experiences of transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) and review recent advances in enhancing clinical outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: High rates of recurrence and progression of non-muscle invasive bladder tumors expose patients to multiple TURBT procedures throughout their disease process. Understanding the impact of TURBT on quality of life and patient experiences is crucial for shared decision-making, thus enhanced recovery protocol trials are being explored to improve patient outcomes. The variability in TURBT practices worldwide contributes to

Thermal injury causing delayed perforation of small bowel after transurethral resection of bladder tumor without evidence of bladder perforation.

Risk of thermal injury to the bowel when utilizing electrocautery at the bladder dome has been reported anecdotally. This is a case report of a 64-year-old man with urothelial carcinoma in situ of the bladder who underwent transurethral resection of bladder tumor at the posterior bladder wall near the dome without evidence of perforation. The postoperative course was complicated by delayed small bowel perforation likely secondary to transmission of thermal energy during fulguration of the resection bed. This injury highlights the need for particular prudence when resecting and fulgurating blad
