Proximity of Vascular Bone Channel in the Lateral Sinus Wall to Root Apices of Maxillary First Molars: A Cone-beam Computed Tomographic Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Apical surgery is frequently indicated in maxillary first molars. Occasionally, a vascular anastomosis in the lateral maxillary sinus wall can be observed during surgery. The aim of this study was to examine the distance between the vascular bone channel (VBC) and the root apices of maxillary first molars using cone-beam computed tomographic imaging. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomographic images of 104 maxillary first molars were oriented in the coronal plane to evaluate the distance between the roots and the VBC. The measurements were only recorded in relation to the buccal ro

Exploring E-Vape Aerosol Penetration into Paranasal Sinuses: Insights from Patient-Specific Models.

Background: Acute and chronic sinusitis significantly impact patients' quality of life. Effective drug delivery to paranasal sinuses is crucial for treating these conditions. However, medications from conventional devices like nasal drops, sprays, and nebulized mists often fail to penetrate the small ostia and reach the sinuses. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of e-vape-generated aerosols entering and filling paranasal sinus cavities, particularly the maxillary sinus. Methods: The aerosol droplets were generated using an electronic vaporizer (e-vape) and were composed solely of veg

Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation of fetal maxillary sinuses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The growth of maxillary sinus is closely connected to the development of facial structures. However, its definition and reference standards on fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have not been analyzed so far. In this study, the objectives were to define and evaluate the fetal maxillary sinus (fMS) formation with MRI. METHODS: We reviewed T2-weighted coronal MRI images of 75 fetuses. The MRI features, time of appearance, and boundaries of fMS were defined. Craniocaudal and transverse diameters of both maxillary sinuses and bone biparietal diameters were measured a

Prevalence of bony septa, antral pathology, and dimensions of the maxillary sinus from a sinus augmentation perspective: A retrospective cone-beam computed tomography study.

PURPOSE: Sinus elevation procedures have become a routine and reliable way to gain bone volume in the edentulous maxilla for dental implant placement. Presence of bony septations and pathology in the maxillary sinus often cause complications leading to graft or implant failure or both. The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the prevalence of pathology, direction of the septa, and sinus width measured at 2 mm, 5 mm, and 10 mm from the sinus floor in maxillary sinuses using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two sinuses from 36 random preoperativ

Diffuse white matter changes caused by dural arteriovenous fistula.

We present two patients with progressive dementia who showed diffuse white matter changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) associated with dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) involving the transverse-sigmoid sinuses. Angiography of both patients revealed that DAVF was associated with multiple occlusive changes in the dural venous sinus. The associated occlusive changes isolated the straight sinus and the DAVF from the other venous sinuses, and concentrated the drainage of the DAVF in the straight sinus. We postulate that the venous hypertension of the straight sinus resulted in the venous is

Coexistance of cerebral sinovenous thrombosis and Dandy Walker malformation in newborn.

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in neonatal period may cause neurological impairment, epilepsy, and lead to stroke. It is caused primarily by coagulopathy of numerous reasons, occasionally perinatal asphyxia, traumatic delivery and hyperhomocysteinemia. Dandy-Walker malformation is characterized by agenesis or hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. Dandy-Walker malformation, variant, and mega cisterna magna represent a spectrum of developmental anomalies. Insults to developing cerebellar hemispheres and the fourth

[Arteriovenous malformation of septum pellucidum in combination with persistent trigeminal neuralgia].

A 16-year-old boy with arteriovenous malformation (AVM) of septum pellucidum in combination with left side persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) is described. Presentation of AVM included severe intracranial hemorrhage and the lesion was removed surgically. The case deserves interest for two reasons. 1) The observation demonstrates the possibility of increased pressure in the afferent arteries of AVM. It was illustrated by distinctive displacement of the zones of the hemodynamical balance around the circle of Willis. The raised pressure in conditions of shunting can be explained using principles

Outcomes of venous sinus stenosis stenting in patients with pulsatile tinnitus and sigmoid sinus wall anomalies.

BACKGROUND: Transverse sinus stenosis (TSS) and sigmoid sinus wall anomalies (SSWAs) are the most common causes of pulsatile tinnitus (PT). While these conditions may co-occur, they usually require different management approaches. This study aims to evaluate whether TSS stenting alone, without targeted treatment of SSWAs, is sufficient to resolve PT in patients presenting with PT, TSS, and SSWAs. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of consecutive patients diagnosed with PT, TSS, and SSWAs who underwent transvenous endovascular treatment between September 2020 and January 2024. The pri

Digitally Guided Lateral Sinus Floor Elevation With Simultaneous Implant Placement: 3 Case Reports With Technical Considerations.

A sinus floor elevation via lateral window (LSFE) is one of the most widely used bone augmentation procedures for implant therapy in the posterior area of the maxilla. Locating and preparing a correct opening window on the lateral sinus wall is a key step of this procedure. Conventionally, the surgeon designs and locates the window after the flap is reflected based on the information obtained from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images or other diagnostic aids. Nevertheless, in spite of the advancements in CBCT imaging, clinicians may still experience hardships in situating and procuring
