Bulletin de la Societe de pathologie exotique et de ses filiales1988fre
Ten to twelve million people irregularly distributed mainly through extensive rural areas of Latin America are afflicted by American trypanosomiasis (Chagas disease). Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiological agent, and it is naturally transmitted to humans by hematophagous hemiptera of Triatominae sub-family. These hemiptera feed by biting and usually defecate in the area near the puncture wound. Mucous membranes of breaks in the continuity of skin serve as passage ways for the parasite present in the excrement of the bug. Acute and chronic forms of American trypanosomiasis occur. Nervous system i

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases are a growing threat to global health, and endemic Chagas disease has emerged as one of the most important health problems in America. The main strategy to prevent Trypanosoma cruzi transmission is chemical control of vectors. This study presents a descriptive analysis of synanthropic triatomines before and after the implementation of a vector-control program in Bahia, Brazil.
METHODS: Descriptive analysis and geospatial statistics were performed on triatomine data, (1) the relative abundance and (2) proportional spatial distribution, from Bahia during

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: There are few reports of Coccus nucifera (Palmae) infestation by triatomines (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae), vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the causal agent of American Trypanosomiasis. The aim of this study was to determine if this palm is an appropriate ecotope for Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma maculata, the main vectors in Venezuela.
METHODS: Dry and green leaves, humid debris, interfoliaceus meshes and bracts from C. nucifera from north-eastern Venezuela were examined for the presence of triatomines. Samples of the intestina

In this study, we investigate the origin and diversification of Trypanosoma cruzi vectors within the Rhodniini tribe (Triatominae subfamily) through phylogenetic analyses based on eight genes from 17 species and 497 specimens-the largest sampling of this tribe to date. Our results predominantly support the paraphyly of the genus Rhodnius, with the three Psammolestes species forming a well-supported monophyletic clade nested within it. In two reconstructions, however, Psammolestes and Rhodnius are recovered as reciprocally monophyletic, each with strong support. In Rhodnius, we find monophyleti

Standardized surveillance and control of kissing bugs (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae), the insect vectors of the Chagas disease parasite, Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease, remains difficult. The Kissing Bug Kill Trap consists of solar powered LED lights mounted over a column of black funnels. It operates autonomously to capture, kill and preserve adult triatomines. We conducted experiments from 2022-2024 testing potential ways to improve trap performance, ease of deployment, and minimize cost. Thirteen prototypes evaluated in Texas, Guatemala, and Mexico captured 1,531 triat

Recent omics studies (cytogenomics, genomics, and transcriptomics) have provided extensive information on Chagas disease (CD) vectors. Here, we conduct a review of proteomic and metabolomic studies on these insect vectors. We address proteomic studies in triatomines, focusing on the identification and characterization of proteins in their saliva, midgut, and salivary glands, emphasizing their role in blood feeding by providing vasodilatory and anticoagulant substances, along with anti-inflammatory and antiplatelet activities. In addition, the review investigates protein diversity in different

BACKGROUND: The genetic diversity of Trypanosoma cruzi and the epidemiological characteristics of the environments in which the parasite occurs are essential for understanding infection dynamics and controlling Chagas disease. This systematic review aimed to: (i) identify and analyze studies that evaluated the genetic variability and epidemiological aspects of T. cruzi infection in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil; (ii) summarize the information reported in the literature; and (iii) suggest new control strategies tailored to the region's epidemiological profile.
METHODS: Following the

The effects of biodiversity on the transmission of infectious diseases now stand as a cornerstone of many public health policies. The upper Amazonia and Guyana shield are hot-spots of biodiversity that offer genuine opportunities to explore the relationship between the risk of transmission of Chagas disease and the diversity of its triatomine vectors. Over 730 triatomines were light-trapped in four geomorphological landscapes shaping French-Guiana, and we determined their taxonomic status and infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. We used a model selection approach to unravel the spatial and temporal

This review deals with transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi by the most important domestic vectors, blood transfusion and oral intake. Among the vectors, Triatoma infestans, Panstrongylus megistus, Rhodnius prolixus, Triatoma dimidiata, Triatoma brasiliensis, Triatoma pseudomaculata, Triatoma sordida, Triatoma maculata, Panstrongylus geniculatus, Rhodnius ecuadoriensis and Rhodnius pallescens can be highlighted. Transmission of Chagas infection, which has been brought under control in some countries in South and Central America, remains a great challenge, particularly considering that many endemi

Between 1950 and 1951, the first Prophylactic campaign against Chagas Diseases was carried on in Brazil by the so existing Serviço Nacional de Malária. The actions involving chemical vector control comprehended 74 municipalities along the Rio Grande Valley, between the States of São Paulo and Minas Gerais. Ever since, until 1975, the activities were performed according the availability of resources, being executed with more or less regularity and coverage. At that time, Chagas disease did no represent priority, in comparison with other endemic diseases prevalent in the Country. Even so, taking

Sustainability has become a focal point of the international agenda. At the heart of its range of distribution in the Gran Chaco Region, the elimination of Triatoma infestans has failed, even in areas subject to intensive professional vector control efforts. Chagas disease control programs traditionally have been composed of two divorced entities: a vector control program in charge of routine field operations (bug detection and insecticide spraying) and a disease control program in charge of screening blood donors, diagnosis, etiologic treatment and providing medical care to chronic patients.

Work on the geography of health has been undertaken in association with the Centro de Investigaciones Ecologicas del Sureste, Chiapas State, Mexico. An example is given from a study of relationships between housing and Chagas' disease in the village of Agua Azul in Chiapas. Prospects for future work in medical geography might involve further studies of Chagas' disease and onchocerciasis, and of the health of refugees and of populations involved in the exploitation of petroleum reserves.

Species belonging to subfamily Triatominae are vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative agent of Chagas disease. They have a wide distribution, inhabiting both tropical and temperate regions. We examined the response of triatomine species distributions and morphological traits to environmental conditions at different bioregions, using three matrices: (1) a distribution matrix of 80 triatomine species, (2) a matrix of environmental variables, and (3) a matrix of morphological traits. To determine trait-environment relationships, an RLQ and Fourth Corner analysis were performed. We found envi

The time interval before beginning feeding, feeding time, and defecation delay for 3 Triatominae subspecies, Meccus phyllosomus mazzottii (Ma), M. p. pallidipennis (Pa), and M. p. phyllosomus (Phy) and their laboratory hybrids were evaluated. The mean time interval for beginning feeding was between 0.1 and 10.1 min for all nymphal instars in each cohort, with significant (P < 0.05) differences among hybrids and parental cohorts. Four (both MaPa and MaPhy) hybrid cohorts had similar mean feeding times to that recorded for one of their parental subspecies, but shorter than the other, whereas the

Genetic relationships among 10 species of bugs belonging to the tribe Rhodniini (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), including some important vectors of Chagas disease, were inferred from allozyme analysis of 12 enzyme loci (out of 21 enzyme systems examined), using agarose gel electrophoresis. These species formed two clusters: one comprising Rhodnius brethesi, R. ecuadoriensis, R. pallescens and R. pictipes; the other with Psammolestes tertius, Rhodnius domesticus and the Rhodnius prolixus group comprising R. nasutus, R. neglectus, R. prolixus and R. robustus. The resulting tree was [((R. ecuadoriensis,

Spleen cells from mice immunized with insect-derived Trypanosoma cruzi metacyclic trypomastigotes were used to obtain Colombian strain-specific monoclonal antibodies. At least 4 different strain-specific antigens were recognized by the monoclonal antibodies on epimastigotes or metacyclic trypomastigotes. There was no reactivity with other stages of Colombian strain T. cruzi, nor with any stage of 15 other T. cruzi strains or isolates, nor with 22 other Trypanosomatidae. One of the monoclonal antibodies was used to identify, by indirect immunofluorescence, Colombian strain flagellates in cryost

The colonization of the different regions of the rectum of Triatoma infestans by Trypanosoma cruzi was studied in unfed larvae, during and after feeding of the bug by scanning electron microscopy. The rectal pads always possessed the highest population densities, but in some bugs the main rectal sac and the region around the anus were also covered by a "carpet" of flagellates. Such high densities were never observed at the midgut/rectal junction. A slight decrease in this region might be caused by blood ingestion and the resulting excretion of urine. However, the flagellates in this region can

BACKGROUND: In Brazil, vector surveillance with public participation is a prioritized action in the primary prevention of Chagas Disease (CD). It is anchored in the implementation of Triatomine Information Posts (TIPs), spaces recognized by health surveillance for receiving insects suspected of being triatomines. For the first time in the scientific literature, a study is dedicated to characterizing TIPs operationally, structurally, and functionally, as well as understanding the factors that hinder their sustainability.
METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted in one of the most vulnerable region
