Triclosan is an antimicrobial agent frequently used in pharmaceuticals and personal care products. We analyzed triclosan for its action on placental secretion of progesterone, estradiol and human chorionic gonadotropin in vitro in the JEG-3 cells. We also investigated its action on cell viability, proliferation and apoptosis. The JEG-3 cells were cultured with increasing doses of triclosan (1×10(-9)-1×10(-4) M) for 24, 48 and 72 h. Triclosan was found to increase estradiol and progesterone secretion after short- and long-term exposure. The stimulatory effect was observed up to 10 μM after shor

An improved method for the determination of triclosan (TCS) and methyltriclosan (MTCS) in fish and foodstuff samples is presented. Analytes were simultaneously extracted and purified using the matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD) technique, and then selectively determined by gas chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). Several combinations of dispersants, clean-up co-sorbents and extraction solvents were tested in order to obtain lipid-free extracts and quantitative recoveries for TCS and MTCS. Under optimised conditions, 0.5 g samples were dispersed using 1.5 g of neutral sili

The maintenance of an effective level of oral hygiene is the cornerstone of all attempts to prevent and control periodontal disease, and yet the widespread prevalence of the disease indicates the inability of most people to maintain a level of plaque control commensurate with periodontal health. The inclusion of antibacterial agents, such as chlorhexidine and triclosan, in oral care products has provided a means to improve oral health. Randomised, controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that the unsupervised use of a dentifrice (toothpaste) containing triclosan/copolymer significantly imp

The basic design for human clinical trials which examine prevention of gingivitis recurrence is well known. However, the anti-gingivitis efficacy of triclosan-containing dentifrices has not been routinely demonstrated using this design, regardless of formulation. In an effort to better understand the subtleties of design which show triclosan efficacy, a study was undertaken to prospectively test how subjects with a range of baseline disease levels (which encompassed the range of gingivitis severity documented in the triclosan literature) benefit from a triclosan dentifrice. This trial was a ra

Triclosan (TCS), a widely used antimicrobial agent in personal care products, typically undergoes phase II metabolism for detoxification. Notably, its phase II metabolites can be reconverted into the parent TCS by microbial activity, revealing their potential toxicological risks. Hence, this study investigated the tissue distribution and metabolic effects in mice following 160 day exposure to TCS at 0.5 or 5 mg/kg/day. The results showed that TCS mainly accumulated in the colon, where it disrupted energy metabolism, enhanced purine metabolism, and elevated reactive oxygen species levels. Lipid

Among emerging organic contaminants (EOCs), triclosan (TCS) is an antibacterial agent and frequently detected in sludge. In this study, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to obtain the first transcriptomic profile of tobacco with TCS treatment in comparison with control. The results of transcriptome profiling indicated that salicylic acid (SA) signalling pathway actively participated in the tobacco's response to TCS treatment. The accumulation of endogenous SA in transgene tobacco lines transformed with a homologous gene of SA binding protein (LcSABP) was significantly enhanced. The resistance

Biofilm-based infections are difficult to treat due to their inherent resistance to antibiotic treatment. Discovering new approaches to enhance antibiotic efficacy in biofilms would be highly significant in treating many chronic infections. Exposure to aminoglycosides induces adaptive resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms. Adaptive resistance is primarily the result of active antibiotic export by RND-type efflux pumps, which use the proton motive force as an energy source. We show that the protonophore uncoupler triclosan depletes the membrane potential of biofilm growing P. aeruginosa

Triclosan (TCS) is a common antimicrobial found in many personal care products. A large amount of TCS thus enters the wastewater system leading to the accumulation thereof in water sources. In this work, core-shell structured GSH-CdSe/ZnS fluorescent quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized based on organometallic synthesis with a thiol ligand capping agent. The GSH-CdSe/ZnS QDs showed excellent photostability and a photoluminescence quantum yield of 89%. The fluorescence of the GSH-CdSe/ZnS QDs was enhanced by the introduction of TCS, likely owing to fluorescence resonance energy transfer from TCS

Non-potable reuse of treated wastewater is becoming widespread as means to address growing water scarcity. Removal of micropollutants (MPs) from such water often requires advanced oxidation processes using OH radicals. OH can be generated in-situ via water photolysis under vacuum-UV (λ<200nm) irradiation. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential of unmasking V-UV radiation from low pressure Hg lamps (emitting at 185 and 254nm), commonly used in decentralized treatment systems, for enhancing MPs removal efficiency. Triclosan, a biocide of limited biodegradability, served as a mode

The effect of the toothpaste ingredient triclosan (2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxyldiphenyl ether) on the prostaglandins biosynthesis in human gingival fibroblasts challenged with interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) or tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFalpha) was studied in vitro. When gingival fibroblasts were treated simultaneously with triclosan and IL-1beta, the stimulatory effect of IL-1beta on prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) and PGI2 formation was reduced in a dose-dependent manner by triclosan. Triclosan also reduced the PGE2 formation induced by TNFalpha. Furthermore, the capacity of IL-1beta to induce rel

Triclosan (TCS) is a widely used antimicrobial agent raising concern about its potential toxicity and adverse effects on fertility. This study investigated the protective efficacy of clomiphene citrate, conventional selenium, nanoselenium and Tribulus terrestris extract (TTE) against TCS-induced toxicity in male rats. Six experimental groups were established: control, TCS-exposed and TCS co-treated with each therapeutic agent. Semen quality; testicular and hepatic biochemical, oxidative and mitochondrial markers; hormone profiles; neurotransmitters; and histopathology were assessed. Specific r

Triclosan (TCS) is an effective antibacterial agent widely used in personal care products and medical items. With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the usage of TCS has significantly increased, leading to a growing pollution issue that has attracted considerable attention. Therefore, assessing the current TCS pollution status is vital. This review discusses distribution and migration of TCS across various environmental matrices and wastewater treatment systems. Especially, the study summarizes the concentration differences of TCS in human and biological tissues across different countries,

Triclosan (2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxydiphenyl ether, TCS) and triclocarban (3,4,4'-trichloro-carbanilide, TCC) are two antimicrobial agents commonly used for personal care products. Previous studies primarily focused on respective harmful effects of TCS and TCC. In terms of their structural similarities and differences, however, the structure-toxicity relationships on health effects of TCS and TCC exposure remain unclear. Herein, global 1H NMR-based metabolomics was employed to screen the changes of metabolic profiling in various biological matrices including liver, serum, urine, feces and in

Bisphenol A (BPA) and triclosan (TCS) are both endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), and pregnant women are usually exposed to them through daily consumption. This study aimed to explore the relationship between prenatal BPA and TCS exposure and allergic diseases in childhood by systematic review and meta-analysis. We searched the topic of prenatal BPA and TCS exposure and allergic diseases in childhood published before March 22, 2021, in four databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane. Statistical analysis was completed using Stata software (version 16.0). Seven papers

Although banished in some countries, triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) have been detected in surface waters in concentrations ranging from ng L-1 to μg L-1 and have shown to affect non-target organisms posing risk to aquatic ecosystems. However, the majority of the studies consider higher levels of these chemicals and single exposure effects to investigate their potential risks, rather than using environmentally relevant concentrations and their binary mixture. In this study, the toxicity of TCS and TCC, and their binary mixture was assessed in catfish embryos (Rhamdia quelen, a south Ame
