Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a rare trophoblastic neoplasm with malignant potential. The diagnosis and prognosis of this rare disease remain difficult. A case of tubal PSTT with the primary manifestation of internal bleeding at 30 weeks' gestation is presented. Emergency exploratory laparotomy and right partial salpingectomy were performed initially. Total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and omentectomy were done immediately after cesarean section at 34 weeks' gestation. No further adjuvant therapy was given after surgery. No evidence of tumor recurrenc

This article reviews the different disease entities that fall under the classification of gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD). The conditions included range from molar pregnancy to the malignant forms of gestational trophoblastic neoplasm (GTN). These disorders all arise from abnormal placental trophoblastic development. The different types of GTD, symptomatology, and diagnostic modalities are examined. The various methods of treatment are reviewed. Although the management of GTD and GTN falls outside the scope of midwifery practice, midwives need to be aware of the incidence, risk factors

OBJECTIVE: Hydroxyl-δ-5-steroid dehydrogenase (HSD3B1) is an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidative conversion of δ-5-3 β-hydroxyl steroids to the δ-4-3-keto configuration and is involved in steroid hormone synthesis. It has been shown to be expressed in normal trophoblastic tissue and benign and neoplastic trophoblastic lesions. HSD3B1 has not been detected in a large number of lung, breast, and uterine carcinomas; however, its expression has not been studied in a wide variety of other nontrophoblastic neoplasms. To test if HSD3B1 is highly specific for normal trophoblasts and trophoblast-associ

Autophagy plays an important role in the normal development and function of trophoblast cells and is precisely regulated during pregnancy. Dysregulated autophagy contributes to the abnormal proliferation of trophoblasts, which is closely related to the occurrence of pregnancy-related diseases. Placenta specific 8 (PLAC8, Onzin) is a multifaceted protein proven to promote autophagy and potentiate various tumor progression. Its role in trophoblasts remains elusive. In our present study, PLAC8 expression was detected in tissues of first-trimester placentas (n = 5), term placentas (n = 5), chorioc

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is a rare malignant gestational trophoblastic neoplasm arising from the malignant transformation of chorionic-type intermediate trophoblastic cells, with important clinical implications, particularly regarding fertility-sparing management in selected patients. At present, most of the ETT cases reported in the literature are characterized by primary lesions of reproductive system origin, with or without distant metastasis. Here, we report a case of isolated pulmonary ETT without a primary uterine lesion. The patient underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic su

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a very rare variant of gestational trophoblastic tumor. It can occur after normal termination of pregnancy or spontaneous abortion and ectopic or molar pregnancy. There is a wide range of clinical manifestations from a benign condition to an aggressive disease with fatal outcome. One of the most important characteristics of PSTT, unlike other forms of gestational trophoblastic diseases (GTD) is the presence of low beta-subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) levels because it is a neoplastic proliferation of intermediate trophoblastic cells.

Recent years have seen the publication of many articles investigating the value of antibodies against inhibin in diagnostic surgical pathology. This review concentrates on the uses of inhibin staining in gynecological pathology. alpha-inhibin is diagnostically the most useful antibody and is a sensitive immunohistochemical marker of most ovarian sex cord-stromal tumors and, as such, is of value in the diagnosis of this heterogeneous group of neoplasms that can be confused morphologically with a wide range of other tumors. Because the antibody is not entirely specific for ovarian sex cord-strom

A series of monoclonal antibodies has been raised against the human choriocarcinoma cell-line, BeWo. Four antigens, Trop-1, -2, -3, and -4, are defined on normal and malignant trophoblast cells. Trop-1 and Trop-2 appear to be specifically expressed on syncytio- and cytotrophoblasts, whereas Trop-3 and Trop-4 are also detected on various tumor cell lines, normal lymphocytes, and monocytes. Anti-Trop-1 and anti-Trop-2 antibodies might prove useful for detection and isolation of fetal trophoblast cells circulating in pregnant women's blood and for diagnosis and therapy in patients having chorioca

A case of primary hepatic carcinoma is reported, which occurred in a 24-year-old woman with a 10-year history of oral contraceptive use, and demonstrated unique morphologic and immunohistochemical features. The tumor was located in the left hepatic lobe, measured 14 cm at its widest, and showed histologic heterogeneity. The neoplastic cells were mostly arranged in trabecular and pseudoglandular growth patterns simulating hepatocellular carcinoma; however, in focal areas, small cystic, organoid and tubular patterns predominated. Immunohistochemical stains showed a phenotype consistent with bili

Chorangioma is a tumor of vascular origin placental, the most frequent among primary placental non-trophoblastic tumors; however, it is found in about 1% of placental pathology case studies. Chorangioma represents a benign neoplasm with proliferation of capillaries and villous stroma associated to multiple gestations, preeclampsia and birth defects in the fetus. This paper reports the case of a 38-year pregnant woman (29 gestation weeks). She had eleven pregnancies, nine deliveries and one abortion. During perinatal assessment patient showed severe polyhydramnios and acute fetal distress. The

Gestational trophoblastic tumors are a group of diseases spanning from a benign hydatidiform mole, through an invasive mole to a highly malignant form of choriocarcinoma. Choriocarcinoma is a rare but the most malignant and aggressive neoplasm of all the gestational trophoblastic diseases. It grows rapidly and metastasizes into the lungs, liver, and, less frequently, to the brain. The author presents a case of a 26-year-old woman who was, based on previous investigations, referred for a CT examination for suspected brain tumour. On the basis of medical history provided by the patient's husband

Based upon a representative sample of testicular tumors studied at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, several testicular and ovarian tumors observed in Denver, pertinent papers in the literature, and the singular thesis of Chevassu on tumors of the testis, the pathogenesis of such neoplasms is elaborated. The findings are philosophical, speculative, and established. Man is a multicellular individual to be regarded as a vehicle for the transmission of unicellular organisms or germ cells from one generation to the next. These cells remain distinct from somatic and trophoblastic cells. The

Gestational trophoblastic diseases comprise a group of interrelated neoplasms, including complete hydatidiform mole (CHM), persistent gestational trophoblastic tumor (GTT), and choriocarcinoma. To better define the molecular features of these diseases, a CHM cDNA library was constructed and a novel cDNA sequence, named CHMS-1, was isolated by differential screening. The CHMS-1 sequence showed a 62% homology with the tumor necrosis factor receptor (TNF-R2) cDNA, and its amino acid deduced sequence shared a high level of homology with the "death domain" region found in various proteins, includin

INTRODUCTION: Gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) is a group of malignant neoplasms that arise from abnormal proliferation of trophoblastic tissue. The metastatic spread rate is depended on the histopathological type, with pulmonary metastases being the most common (80%) in patients with metastases. Pneumothorax as a primary manifestation is extremely rare. We hereby discuss a unique case of spontaneous hemi-pneumothorax due to metastatic GTN in a 30-weeks pregnant woman.

Gestational trophoblastic diseases are a group of pregnancy-related disorders, originated from trophoblast cells. They include benign and aggressive tumors, such as the invasive mole, the choriocarcinoma, the placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT), and the epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT). These malignancies are characterized as gestational trophoblastic neoplasm (GTN), rarer, although more dangerous. The diagnosis of GTN is made in most cases by monitoring serum chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) with histological confirmation. The use of specific tissue biomarkers has been increasingly emp

Placental site trophoblastic tumor (PSTT) is a gestational neoplasm derived from the extravillous (intermediate) trophoblast of the implantation site. PSTT is characterized by a highly invasive phenotype, but the molecular mechanisms are poorly understood. In this report, we demonstrate that PSTTs expressed the activated (phosphorylated) form of mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) in 84% of cases, whereas the normal extravillous trophoblastic cells did not. To characterize the role of MAPK activation in PSTT, we established the first PSTT cell culture, IST-2, from a surgically resected PST

In human placentation, events of implantation and early blastocyst development are mediated by fetal trophoblastic cells which penetrate into the maternal endometrium and myometrium. Although highly regulated in its biological behavior, trophoblast simulates a malignant neoplasm by virtue of invading the uterine wall and uterine spiral arteries and by embolizing throughout the systemic circulation. This process is at least in part dependant on the regulated production of proteolytic enzymes to degrade extracellular matrix. The most abundant extracellular protein is connective tissue type (inte

Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) is a rare neoplasm derived from chorionic intermediate trophoblast cells, representing less than 2% of all gestational trophoblastic neoplasms. Classically, ETT presents as a uterine mass in women of reproductive age following a term pregnancy. The time from pregnancy to tumor development varies from months to several years. ETT most often arises in the endometrium, followed by the cervix. Extrauterine ETT are extremely infrequent, with few cases reported in the literature. We report a case of a 41-year-old woman, with history of three term pregnancies who
