Phenological type- and diameter-dependent effects of individual light availability and interannual climate variation on tree growth.

Tree growth is a critical carbon sink for tropical forests, yet how light and climate jointly shape long-term individual-level growth remains poorly understood. Using 34 years of data from 2881 trees (10 species: six evergreen, four deciduous) in a Costa Rican wet forest, we examined how interannual climate variation and individual light availability influence tree growth in diameter at breast height, height and above-ground biomass across phenological types and size classes. Light availability consistently emerged as the primary growth driver, with deciduous species more responsive than everg

Decadal changes in atmospheric circulation detected in cloud motion vectors.

Changing atmospheric circulations shift global weather patterns and their extremes, profoundly affecting human societies and ecosystems. Studies using atmospheric reanalysis and climate model data1-9 indicate diverse circulation changes in recent decades but show discrepancies in magnitude and even direction, underscoring the urgent need for validation with independent, climate-quality measurements3. Here we show statistically significant changes in tropospheric circulation over the past two decades using satellite-observed, height-resolved cloud motion vectors from the Multi-angle Imaging Spe

Enhanced global storm surges by tropical cyclone poleward migration.

Tropical cyclone-induced storm surges pose significant and growing threats to coastal regions; however, their long-term evolution in response to changing tropical cyclone characteristics remains poorly quantified. Here, by conducting a comprehensive global analysis, we find that tropical cyclone-induced storm surge has increased globally by 20% over the period 1982-2024, which is also statistically significant in both hemispheres. Notably, such increases are 28% over the western North Pacific, 38.2% over the eastern Pacific and 31% over the South Pacific, respectively. Through statistical deco

Exfoliation syndrome: frequency, gender distribution and association with climatically induced alterations of the cornea and conjunctiva.

PURPOSE: To investigate exfoliation syndrome (ES) in order to elucidate gender distribution and the roles of genetic and climatic factors in its manifestation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied the gender distribution of ES and the association between ES and the appearance of certain climatically induced disorders (pterygium, climatic droplet keratopathy) and the size of pingueculae in populations living in the Arctic region, in temperate regions and in tropical regions. This involved a total of 11 samples taken in eight different countries, comprising 2206 persons of both genders over the age

Impacts of climate change and variability on tropospheric ozone and its precursors.

Two coupled climate-chemistry model experiments for the period 1990-2030 were conducted: one with a fixed climate and the other with a varying climate forced by the is92a scenario. By comparing results from these experiments we have attempted to identify changes and variations in physical climate that may have important influences upon tropospheric chemical composition. Climate variables considered include: temperature, humidity, convective mass fluxes, precipitation, and the large-scale circulation. Increases in humidity, directly related to increases in temperature, exert a major influence o

A potential explanation for the global increase in tropical cyclone rapid intensification.

Tropical cyclone rapid intensification events often cause destructive hurricane landfalls because they are associated with the strongest storms and forecasts with the highest errors. Multi-decade observational datasets of tropical cyclone behavior have recently enabled documentation of upward trends in tropical cyclone rapid intensification in several basins. However, a robust anthropogenic signal in global intensification trends and the physical drivers of intensification trends have yet to be identified. To address these knowledge gaps, here we compare the observed trends in intensification

A global dataset of synthetic tropical cyclone tracks for the El Niño‒Southern Oscillation.

Tropical cyclones have devastating consequences, ranging from economic damage to health impacts with impacts varying annually. El Niño‒Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the primary climate mode that influences interannual timescales, with significant implications for tropical cyclone activity across different basins. An extensive dataset is essential for the accurate assessment of the interannual variability in tropical cyclone risk related to this climate mode. Herein, we present a global dataset of 12,000 years of synthetic storm tracks, representing each ENSO phase (El Niño, La Niña, and neutr

Animal reproduction in the tropics and subtropics: matching innovation with resilience and reality.

Climate variability poses a major challenge to reproductive performance in tropical and subtropical livestock systems, where prolonged droughts, irregular rainfall, heat stress, and abrupt nutritional restrictions can disrupt reproductive function. Thus, future research should focus on integrated, context-specific strategies that combine reproductive technologies with adapted genetics, management, nutrition, disease prevention, and accessible reproductive health services. Particular attention should be given to locally adapted breeds and populations, whose reproductive resilience conventional

Tropical pulmonary diseases.

The term 'tropical' refers to the region of the Earth lying between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. Located between these equatorial parallels demarcating the Torrid Zone are several underdeveloped and developing countries: Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, southern India, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Cuba, Ethiopia, Sudan and Nigeria, to name but a few considered to be 'tropical'. The climate in most of these countries is characterized by high temperatures and high humidity. The tropical climate and general state of socio-economic underdevelopment in such coun

Tropical Easterly Waves in the Tropical North Atlantic Basin.

Tropical easterly waves (TEWs) serve as precursors to most Atlantic tropical cyclones and strongly modulate the hydrological cycle over West Africa, the tropical Atlantic, and the Caribbean region. Despite significant advances, uncertainties remain regarding the processes governing TEW maintenance and intensification, the relationship with tropical cyclogenesis, and future projections of TEW activity under global warming. Progress on these fronts is constrained by persistent disparities in tracking methodologies, limited observational understanding of moisture-convection feedbacks across scale

Photosynthetic responses to temperature across the tropics: a meta-analytic approach.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Tropical forests exchange more carbon dioxide (CO2) with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Yet, uncertainty in the projected carbon balance over the next century is roughly three times greater for the tropics than other for ecosystems. Our limited knowledge of tropical plant physiological responses, including photosynthetic, to climate change is a substantial source of uncertainty in our ability to forecast the global terrestrial carbon sink. METHODS: We used a meta-analytic approach, focusing on tropical photosynthetic temperature responses, to address thi

Non-specific ileojejunitis in Arequipa, Peru.

Non-specific ileojejunitis, characterised by mild to moderate structural changes in the intestinal mucosa and often associated with asymptomatic malabsorption, is known to occur in the tropics and in countries with hot climates. This acquired condition is probably related to environmental factors, and some consider it to be a subclinical form of tropical sprue. Changes in the intestinal mucosa typical of non-specific ileojejunitis were found in 10 indigenous Indians as well as 5 people of Latin stock living in the Southern Peruvian sierra, where tropical sprue has not as yet been demonstrated

Tree Cover and Temperature Shape the Distribution of Epiphytic Pleurozia in Asia: Forest Havens in a Warming Climate.

Pleurozia (Pleuroziaceae, Marchantiophyta) is an evolutionarily and ecologically significant genus of epiphytic liverworts, primarily distributed in tropical and subtropical montane forests. However, the effects of climate change on its distribution remain poorly understood. In this study, we employed the MaxEnt model to predict the potential distribution patterns of Pleurozia in Asia at both the genus and species levels under current and future climate scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 for 2050 and 2070). The results revealed that evergreen broadleaf forest cover, temperature variability (annu

[Tropical and travel-related dermatomycoses : Part 2: cutaneous infections due to yeasts, moulds, and dimorphic fungi].

Besides dermatophytoses, a broad range of cutaneous infections due to yeasts and moulds may occur in subtropical and tropical countries where they can affect travellers. Not to be forgotten are endemic occurring dimorphic or biphasic fungi in countries with hot climate, which cause systemic and secondary cutaneous infections in immunosuppressed and immunocompetent people. In the tropics, the prevalence of pityriasis versicolor, caused by the lipophilic yeast Malassezia spp., is about 30-40 %, in distinct areas even 50 %. Adult respiratory distress syndrome in the tropics.

Today ARDS is more frequently recognized and managed in tropical countries, although published data from most locations is meager. The spectrum of disorders causing ARDS in tropical countries includes virtually all conditions encountered in the West. Additionally, tropical infections and other disorders are seen far more commonly. In particular, malaria and TB are important infections that predispose patients to ARDS in the tropics. Both of these illnesses give lead to severe forms of disease, such as falciparum malaria, acute miliary TB or TB bronchopneumonia, and may cause ARDS. Awareness of

Prevalence and risk factors of gastrointestinal nematode infestation of horses, donkeys and mules in tropical, dry and temperate regions in Mexico.

The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) in horses, donkeys and mules and its associations with age, sex and climatic factors (derived from satellite data) to identify the potential risk factors of different climate regions in four Mexican states. From May 2017 to April 2018, a total of 560 farm owners or managers answered the questionnaire, and the data were used to establish three Köppen climate classes (tropical, dry, temperate). The overall prevalence of GIN parasites in equines was 77.9% (436 out of 560). The highest percentage of GIN was
